And so it happened...
I knew Theresa would get down the mountain to buy fried tofu for sure.
But I'm not stopping her.
Early in the morning, Theresa sneaked off without knowing I was watching her.
She left a note saying she went to buy fired tofu. It had to be early, because fried tofu sold out fast.
She also asked me to look after the shrine.
I allowed her to go alone, because I knew it's safe to do so.
And more importantly, I needed some heart-to-heart time alone with Higokumaru.
The fox spirit seemed heedless though, which was to my advantage.
Higokumaru
Taking care of the shrine? You should change first.
Kasumi
Change?
Higokumaru
We're not a popular shrine, but people do come and visit because we are the only one here.
Higokumaru
And what's a shrine without its miko?
Higokumaru
Theresa is not here, and the least you can do is to put on her miko outfit and try to play the part.
< The screen goes black. >
Higokumaru
Oh right.
Higokumaru
You know what sets your day in a good mood? Fried tofu.
Higokumaru
You know what makes the best post-nap dessert? Fried tofu.
Higokumaru
You know what the best way to enjoy a beautiful sunny day is? Fried tofu.

Kasumi
That's a lot of words for "I want fried tofu".
Kasumi
I've changed.
The sudden gaze of two big, watery eyes made me uneasy.
Higokumaru
Aneki... Er, no.
Kasumi
...
Higokumaru
No no no, who is aneki?
Kasumi
I don't recall being called "aneki" either.
Higokumaru
Haha, I must have got up from the wrong side of the bed, nothing some firedfired tofu won't cure.
Higokumaru
Chop chop, start cleaning now.
Birds were chirping gleefully in the bamboo grove. It's usually my nap time after the mission, so it's refreshing both to my eyes and ears.
I heard leaves rustling. It's the squirrels passing through with cheeks popped up by acorns.
Peace, comfort, and a bitbit hubbub were what made the village perfect for living.
Higokumaru
There weren't many visitors in the morning, so Kasumi needed only to focus on cleaning.
Higokumaru
Villagers who came to pray didn't need a miko to read their divination slips. They had the answer themselves.
Kasumi
Wait, someone came.
Footsteps were sent along the stone stairs. I lowered my head and walked behind the ema rack.
The ema plaques waving in the wind covered me up nicely, and the small gaps between them allowed me to observe.
The unsuspecting stranger had her back facing me. She took off her gloves to wash her hands at the Chozuya.
A monotonous ritual, but she did it with utmost care and attention, as if to rinse away all her sins.
The stark white hair and black cloak gave her away. That's her for sure.
Kallen
Done.
I was right to hide there.
I didn't know her intentionintention, but meeting with the castellan here certainly spelled trouble.
However, like any other visitor, she walked into the haiden and soundsound the bell to make sure the god could hear her.
After two bows and two hand claps, she stood before the main hall for a long while, probably praying.
Kallen
Kami-sama, please...
Her voice dropped and became inaudible.
The last bow was still yet to come... almost too long for a prayer.
I turned back and took a look.
The castellan didn't leave, but she wasn't praying either. She was looking around as if searching for something.
In the end, she seemed to have confirmed something and took the last bow with a smile.
Kasumi
...
Higokumaru
This is not good... She is dangerous...
Higokumaru
I-I'm leaving this shrine!
Kasumi
Wait, Higokumaru, what happened?
Higokumaru
I don't know... but I know this woman. She is here for me.
Higokumaru
Maybe she takes me for the demon fox and believes I might bring disasters to Yae Machi again...
Higokumaru
I'm leaving here. Theresa doesn't need more trouble right now.
Kasumi
Higokumaru?
I couldn't hear Higokumaru anymore.
The castellan seemed to have sensed something. She took a look in my direction and walked out of the shrine.
Kasumi
How could I find Higokumaru...
Kasumi
The castellan probably left following Higokumaru.
Kasumi
She might lead me to some clues if I follow her.
< The screen goes black, then switches to the shrine, where the Captain will have control of Yae Sakura's [Darkbolt Jonin] battlesuit. >
The castellan looks strange...
Follow her and check out what's going on.
Follow her and check out what's going on.
< Talk with the person. >
Kasumi:
Excuse me, did you see the castellan?
Passer-by:
Yeah, she was leaving the village.
Passer-by:
I heard that the demon fox was reemerging,
Passer-by:
and the castellan was planning to catch it.
Kasumi:
(I have to find Higokumaru ASAP.)
< Defeat the enemies. >
Kasumi:
The castellan disappeared...?
< Enemies defeated. >
< Light up the three stone pillars. >
< When one stone pillar is lit: >
Kasumi:
Where's the castellan hiding?
< When two stone pillars are lit: >
Kasumi:
What's happened to Higokumaru?
< Defeat the Defense Core. >
< Two health bars depleted. >
Everything began to shift and twist... For an instant, I saw a black hole under my feet swallowing everything in.

And a new world spread out beneath me.
Before my eyes was a gigantic beast growling, its eyes the color of flames.
It's something I'd never seen before.
But the familiar smell was unmistakable.
I knew it would come to this, but somehow it still felt...
Kasumi
Hi-Higokumaru?
The rune of the Path of Tiryag was clearly on its body.
Higokumaru
I knew you had your eyes on me from the beginning... but this came much sooner than I expected.
Kasumi
What did the castellan do to you?
Higokumaru
Nothing.
Higokumaru
She only wanted me to leave the shrine.
Higokumaru
But the outside world is... terrifying...
Higokumaru
Once I left the shrine... past memories all came back to me...
Higokumaru
Aneki is... dead... and I...
Kasumi
Higokumaru...
Higokumaru
Higoku... I thought my true form would be as beautiful as crimson jade.
Higokumaru
Now I nownow it's more like crimson hell...
Higokumaru
My name is "Hellmaru".
Kasumi
Folklore depicted the appearance of the demon fox as...
Kasumi
"Nine tails and thunderous howling."
Kasumi
You're...
Hellmaru
I'm the demon fox sealed by Raksha's Rage in the legend.
