X-10 Experiment

The X-10 Experiment is a cooperation product between the Cocolia Research Facility and Cocolia's Orphanage to develop and exploit the next generation of humanoid combat weapons that can fight against Honkai.[citation needed] It aims to create a new breed of human with complete Honkai adaptability by using children who already have a natural resistance to it.[1] Cocolia hopes to give the mechanical armor spirituality.[citation needed]

If a candidate of the X-10 Experiment were to pass, they would be able to manipulate Honkai and matter at a subatomic level.[2]

The Last Experiments

Cocolia secretly adopted a group of orphans and hoped to curb the Honkai through experiments. Beforehand, there were seven previous candidates of the X-10 Experiment, but all of them failed.[2] The last ones chosen were decided to be 1 of 3 orphans: Bronya Zaychik, Seele Vollerei, and Sin Mal.[citation needed]

Seele was taken out later on because she had the least Honkai resistance. However, she awakened her stigmata when dealing with Sin Mal and learned of the experiment, so she showed her stigmata mark to Cocolia, who put her on the experiment.[citation needed]

The test was successful at first, with Seele even showing matter manipulation abilities after 0.8 seconds.[3] However, her control and Honkai resistance were not strong enough in the end, causing her to start disappearing. Her physical integrity instantly collapsed, and she entered a quantum state.[4] Afterwards, Seele reappeared outside of the X-10 Labs, moving with great speed towards Cocolia's Orphanage.[5] She tried to see Bronya one final time but disappeared into the quantum plane before she could open the door to their room. This essentially made her "dead," as she could only be reached and communicated with by visiting the quantum plane, making her count as the eighth failed candidate.[6]

This incident led Cocolia to decide to end the X-10 Experiment. But, once Bronya learned of the failure from Cocolia, she insisted on participating in the test, wondering if entering a quantum state would allow her to meet Seele again.[7] She threatened to commit suicide if she couldn't take part in the experiment, causing Cocolia to reluctantly agree to let her participate.[8]

From there on, Bronya started the test and reunited with Seele, who was surprised to see her.[9] Bronya promised to get her out of the quantum plane.[citation needed]

As the experiment continued, Bronya remained in the plane longer than planned, resulting in Honkai infection in parts of her brain and Honkai spreading throughout her damaged legs. Yet, even once her neural link was cut off, Bronya refused to have the test end.[10] Eventually, Bronya's amygdala and emotive circuits were greatly damaged, and she received cerebral trauma of a minimum of 8%.[11]

Seele immediately gave Bronya a gift (Project Bunny 19C) and sent her back to the real world before the side effects could cripple Bronya even further. As a result of visiting Seele, Bronya lost her emotional receptors,[12] having to rely on a biochip and exoskeleton for survival.[citation needed] She also lost the use of her legs and could only walk with the help of prosthetics.[13] Despite her injuries, Bronya did also gain additional Honkai resistance from the experiment.[14]
