"Heartless Bear" or simply "Bear" is one of the three Lead Hunters of the Galaxy Rangers, alongside "One-Eyed Owl" and La Mancha. It is said that La Mancha, the hero, made friends far and wide, swearing brotherhood with the two mighty champions "Bear" and "Owl," and uniting the Galaxy Rangers from all corners of the cosmos. On the eve of Operation Zulo, the three of them took a blood oath, swearing to the heavens: "From this day forth, we three shall share both fortune and woe, united in life and death!"^[2]

However, Operation Zulo came at a heavy cost to the Galaxy Rangers. Facing imminent defeat despite the remnants of Swarm aiding them, La Mancha unleashed the shadow of Voracity sealed within his right arm as a last-ditch effort to secure victory. The shadow subsequently consumed Zulo, the remnants of Swarm, and many Galaxy Rangers alike.^[3] In the aftermath, La Mancha incurred the ire of "Heartless Bear" and "One-Eyed Owl," who accused him of dragging the Rangers into ruin for the sake of a personal vendetta. Following the incident, La Mancha quietly disappeared. While seeking La Mancha's whereabouts, some recruits following "Bear" attempted to shake down the third author of Letters to the Detective, claiming that La Mancha had sold Dr. Primitive's archives, stolen Isee's relic, and was now living it up on an IPC planet.^[1]
