It is one of the Scènes de la vie privée (English: Scenes from private life) in La Comédie humaine (English: The Human Comedy), Honoré de Balzac's 1829–48 multi-volume collection of 91 finished works (novels, short stories, and analytical essays) and 46 unfinished works, that depict French society in the period of the Restoration (1815–30) and the July Monarchy (1830–48).
