Suyi (Chinese: 素衣) is Sushang's mother, as well as the previous wielder of the Xuanyuan Sword. She has since given the sword to Sushang and trained her in martial arts.[1]

Profile

Suyi is a Cloud Knight of the Xianzhou Yaoqing and has trained Sushang in martial arts since she was a child, and was very strict about her practicing her martial skills, forcing her to practice since she was young. She had Sushang get up and spar with her before the crack of dawn. Suyi often talked about the heroes among the Cloud Knights' ranks during Sushang's childhood. Her swordplay technique is notably similar to Yanqing's according to Sushang.[2] While Sushang struggles to wield it with two hands, Suyi can swing the Xuanyuan Sword with one hand.[3]

Story

As the architecture across the Yaoqing began to change from the graceful flying eaves, glazed tiles and Fallow Earth bricks of the Xianzhou to sleek, monolithic IPC buildings, like many of her fellow Yaoqing locals older than 500 years, Suyi was of the opinion that the Yaoqing has changed, though they're not sure whether this change would lead to a better future, or if it would allow short-life species to dictate their way of life, causing anxiety amongst the populace.[4]

After Sushang had written her parents a letter describing her experiences on the Xianzhou Luofu, Suyi wrote back stating they understood and were deeply gratified. In addition, they also wrote some new instructions in their letter, telling her when making friends, she should consider if they're good or bad, saying that her collusion with hoodlums had worried and aggrieved them. She reminded Sushang that even though she was old enough for courtship, she still didn't understand how unpredictable and dangerous the world could be. She added that straight-forward, trustworthy, and knowledgeable people are good and should make good friends. But expedient, soft, and flattering people are no good, and should be avoided.

She also told Sushang to not strive to achieve grandiose things, adding that they've known she had always been anxious about justice. Quoting an old Xianzhou; "As reputation is never easily gained, so glory cannot be coincidence," she added that it wasn't good to make achievements and then boast about them. She told Sushang to keep in mind that Xianzhou people live forever, so fame and fortune pass was fleeting, stressing the importance of building up a strong foundation and focus on the practical, being meticulous and careful, exaggerating that one slip and she'll get into trouble, and bear the consequences for life.

She also reminded Sushang to keep her sword sharp every day, and to not forget to recite her Blade Swara to focus her spirit. She stated the mind is the basis of martial arts, and when one's mind gets refined into the formless, one can know that the sword is nothing but another crutch to rely on, that grass, wood, stone, bamboo and the alike can all make swords. She told Sushang to follow her heart and energies freely, as it will take many a day yet for you to eventually tame your Xuanyuan sword.

She also added that Sushang made a lot of writing errors, and implored her to read more books while she was off duty.[1]
