Greta

Greta is a recurring NPC who appears during Season 1, Chapter 2: A Call From the Hollow's Heart (A), A Call From the Hollow's Heart (B) and Chapter 5: A Storm of Falling Stars (B). She is one of the new line of In-Hollow Smart Construction Machinery created by Grace Howard.

Profile

Greta is Belobog Heavy Industries' In-Hollow Boring Machine. Made to excavate tunnels, she is also equipped with a massive demolition saw to tear down buildings. A notable part of Greta's personality is her interest with love, having had a relationship with a building she called 'Mr. White.' She was quick to anger when people tried to take her away from her lover or get close to him, fighting them in a violent manner.

History

The In-Hollow Boring Machine Mark III was the first of a new line of In-Hollow Smart Construction Machinery created by Grace Howard. Her design was based off schematics of the prototype Khors Belobog created before the old capital's fall, namely Geroy. After countless attempts to get this new machine running, Grace was finally able to via Ether substance stimulation, with the machine activating just in time to protect her creator from incoming Ethereals. After protecting Grace, Greta stated itself to be a 'Smart, adorable, kind and strong' machine, but soon asked their creator if she could just be 'an adorable machine?'^[2] Grace later named her first child 'Greta.' Greta would soon work alongside two siblings, Hans and Friday.

Whilst working in a nearby Hollow, Greta grew feelings for a building that was under construction.^[1] A surge of Etheric corruption caused her and the other smart machines' logic cores to malfunction, leading to changes in personality. For Greta, she was now able to comprehend the concept of love, albeit somewhat abnormally. Instead of returning to the construction site, Greta went deeper inside the Hollow to find her love: Mr. White.^[3]

When members of Belobog Heavy Industries, guided by Phaethon, came to take Greta back, they were greeted by her ordering them to stay away from Mr. White, with Grace amazed at how much her child had grown. When Ben Bigger asked if the building Greta was standing on was Mr. White, Greta, insulted by the comment, fought the group and unknowingly attracted Ethereals to the area. Greta ended up charging at the building in a fit of rage, accidentally cutting through a load-bearing wall and 'killing' Mr. White. Grace was able to calm the now-mourning machine and explained how buildings can only give one hug in their lifetime, with Mr. White giving his to Greta and protecting her from the oncoming Ethereals in the process. Grace then promised that they would rebuild Mr. White on new land and Greta returned to the construction site.^[3]

Greta, alongside her siblings, assisted Belobog Heavy Industries in retrieving Geroy from Pioneer's Memorial Plaza and unknowingly released the Sacrifice Khors had sealed inside the monument. All three In-Hollow Smart Machines were then absorbed by the Sacrifice, transforming into Unknown Corruption Complex.^[4] After Koleda Belobog used Geroy and the monument to kill the Corrupted creature, the corpse was taken by New Eridu Public Security and given to H.A.N.D.^[5]

Sometime later, PubSec were able to finish recovery of the corrupted wreckage and returned the three machines back to Belobog. Whilst Hans and Friday went back to working, Greta suffered from a form of grief due to missing Mr. White that caused her depth sounder and life-detection units to glitch out. Finding a video in her core, Grace made a miniature replica of Mr. White to help her child, Greta soon installed it in her cockpit and claimed that with it she can feel her lover's guidance and companionship forever. ^[1]

During Section 6's pursuit of a now-transformed Justin Bringer, Greta would appear alongside Koleda and Ben to assist them, moving a storage container out of the way for them to proceed.^[6]

Etymology

• Greta is a named derived from the name Margareta which comes from gr: Margarites.
  • Her name, alongside Hans', could also be a reference to the Grimm fairy tale Hansel and Gretel.
