Aurelius (Harmost)

Aurelius was a historical character from Fontaine and one of the four Harmosts of Remuria.

Profile

Aurelius preferred to not use violence when conquering tribes for Remuria, instead simply announcing the news of conquest and annexing them into the empire.^[1] He was the Harmost who promoted Boethius, as well as the person who originally divided all things into four categories.^[2] His research and theories would eventually be used by the Narzissenkreuz Ordo.

Story

Aurelius's death came when traitors on Remuria's imperial flagship sank the ship with him on it. His final resting place is unknown.^[3]

In modern Fontaine, there is a trilogy of plays called "The Saga of Aurelius". However, it is believed that the main character is completely fictional and has no historical counterpart.^[4]

Etymology

• Aurelius' name is likely derived from two historical figures: Quintus Aurelius Symmachus and Marcus Aurelius. The former was a Roman statesman and orator who had a close relationship with Boethius, whom he even considered as his "son-in-law," while in the lore Aurelius is the one who promoted Boethius. Marcus Aurelius was both a Roman emperor and influential Stoic, Genshin's Aurelius dividing all things into four categories is most likely referring to Stoicism, specifically its four categories:
  • Substance (Ancient Greek: ὑποκείμενον hupokeímenon, lit. "that which lies beneath") which means to individuate ousia as a temporary lump of matter.
  • Quality (Ancient Greek: ποιων poion) is to distinguish an object by its qualities, "quality" here is described as pneuma (Ancient Greek: πνεῦμα pneûma, lit. "wind, breath, spirit") imbuiding an object by the Stoics.
  • Somehow disposed (Ancient Greek: νόος nóos, lit. "mind") the characteristics that are not present in an object.
  • Somehow disposed in relation to something (Ancient Greek: προς τα πίσω pros ta píso) refers to the characteristics of an object such as its position within time and space, the characteristics of that object are related to other phenomena.
