Florian

Florian is a quest-exclusive NPC that appears in Clorinde's Story Quest, Rapperia Chapter: Act I - Silent Night.

Profile

Florian belongs to a local Fontainian roleplay group, the Tabletop Troupe, and serves as a script manager who sometimes plays roles in his scripts. His father, a Marechaussee Hunter, taught him the sword techniques, duties, and the legends of the Marechaussee Hunters, charging him with protecting a seal passed down in the family. Florian's father once told him of an ancient treasure associated with the Hunters and to search for it if he ever felt lost.

Florian's father died in obscurity, leaving his sone resentful of the fact that the Marechaussee Hunters were not recognized for their accomplishments and sacrifices. In his bitterness, Florian neglected the care of the seal. Unbeknownst to him, the seal had been passed down in his family to trap a monster from several hundred years ago known as the "Devorator." This monster is an old enemy of the Marechaussee Hunters, capable of amplifying desires and taking over the bodies of those without sufficiently strong willpower.

After coming into contact with the seal, Florian falls under the influence of the "Devorator" and begins to plot the destruction of the Marechaussee Hunters. He attacks and steals two keys necessary to access the legendary "treasure" from other Marechaussee Hunters. He also writes an unfinished script for a roleplaying campaign, "Marechaussee Hunter: Judgment Day," to lure Clorinde to the location of the "treasure" using her tabletop hobby and bury her there with explosives.

While acting as though Florian's attack was part of the script, Clorinde disarms the explosives and defeated Florian. After combining the stolen keys with the two remaining keys, Clorinde opens the secret chamber that holds the "treasure:" a stone tablet recording the deeds and names of past Marechaussee Hunters and their broken weapons. After Florian learns the truth of the "treasure," the "Devorator's" influence is dispelled and Florian and Clorinde collaborate to improvise an ending to his script.

In the improvised final act of the script, the roleplaying group enters the basement in which the "Devorator" is held, and Florian lures it into his body for Clorinde and the spirits of deceased Marechaussee Hunters to defeat. After he regains consciousness, Clorinde acknowledges his honour and spirit as a true Marechaussee Hunter and instructs him to make amends with the Hunters he wronged.

• Florian (Latin: Florianus) was a Christian holy man and the patron saint of chimney sweeps, soapmakers, and firefighters. Florian is also the patron saint of Poland; the city of Linz, Austria; and Upper Austria, jointly with Leopold III, Margrave of Austria.
