- Mats is a given name, a Scandinavian and Estonian form of Matthew or Matthias.
- In estonian, the name version can also mean a farmer (derogatory) - like a country bumpkin or "yokel". [1]
- Generally it is used to refer to people who are dim or un-cultured. This is likely because it became a popular name among farmers and the balto-german lords used it in a derogatory way. Estonians later started seeing in a positive way because the name started to denote a hard worker. [2]
