Where Waves Meet the Reef

Stone Stool: Well, I'll be, (‍Traveler‍), in the flesh — talk about my lucky day! I head out on deck to get some fresh air, and run straight into you...
Icon Dialogue Talk White Aren't you usually on deck anyway?
Stone Stool: Me? No! I'm the chief engineer. I'm in charge of the ship's propulsion system, which means I'm usually cooped up down below.
Icon Dialogue Talk White Does that mean you're always working the oars?
Icon Dialogue Talk White That must be very physically demanding...
Stone Stool: Row? Hahahaha! Looks like our techs have done a fantastic job — it's not just outsiders who can't see how the ship works, even folks like you are in the dark!
Stone Stool: The oars on Alcor-class ships serve a supplementary role. The main propulsion comes from mechanically powered paddle wheels on the surface and propellers beneath the water's surface.
Stone Stool: If we ever run into a fast-moving monster like a Vishap, we'll need enough speed to either keep up with it or make a clean getaway. In a situation like that, it takes the paddle wheels and propellers to give us the power we need.
Stone Stool: The oars on either side, which can be hooked up directly to the ship's propulsion device, are usually put to use in rough seas to provide torque, keep the hull steady, and make quick, sharp turns.
Stone Stool: For example, a good while back, we ran into Beisht — even though the waves were pounding, we managed to keep the Alcor upright by running the oars in an alternating pattern.
Stone Stool: Plus, when monsters get close and creep up on our blind spots, we can run the oars like weapons to keep them from reaching the waterline and climbing up onto the deck.
Icon Dialogue Talk White Like a flail!
Icon Dialogue Talk White That never occurred to me before...
Stone Stool: But of course, we still get good use out of our sails. When the winds howl above the raging seas, harnessing their power can really help us save resources.
Icon Dialogue Talk White Enjoy your fresh air!
Stone Stool: Thanks! You take care of yourself!
