Sylvain

Sylvain is a quest-exclusive NPC that appears in Emilie's Story Quest, Pomum de Ambra Chapter: Act I - Floral Debt, Blood Due.

Profile

Sylvain, under the guise of Eude, is a perfume merchant from Fontaine. He and his brother Lucien were part of a group promoting and inflating the price of "Auguste," a rare and highly sought-after perfume during the height of the "Perfume Mania" twenty years ago. After the authorities intervened, the brothers were sent to the Fortress of Meropide for falsification of financial accounts and market manipulation. After being released from prison, they became embroiled in Kirya's revenge plot and the plan to recreate the "Auguste" perfume.

Story

Unbeknownst to the public, the "Auguste" flower used to create the perfume of the same name was cultivated using the power of a Delusion, and posed a potential danger to human health, especially those sensitive to elemental energy. The merchant brothers had confessed to their financial crimes to prevent further investigation into the perfume itself and avoid a longer prison sentence. Kirya, the brother of the scholar responsible for creating the flowers, inherited most of the proceeds from the sale of the perfume.

Once the brothers hear rumours of the extinct "Auguste" flower reappearing in Port Ormos, they travel to Sumeru to investigate. The night after "Edgar," a perfumer involved in the creation of the original "Auguste," is apparently attacked, Lucien is murdered in his room, and a distraught Sylvain finds his body the next morning. After examining his body, Emilie determines he likely died after inhaling "Auguste" perfume.

After "Edgar" reveals the truth behind the "Auguste," Sylvain also reveals the fact that Yelena, the cultivator of the original "Auguste" flowers, had died to protect her brother. Sylvain agrees to "Edgar's" plan to lure Kirya out by spreading rumours that they would be brought back to Fontaine for resentencing. The following night, Sylvain is also attacked with "Auguste." It is later revealed that Kirya had disguised himself as Edgar in order to avenge his sister Yelena. Under the pretense of holding a flower exhibition, he lured the merchant brothers to Sumeru and murdered Lucien with a novel version of "Auguste" hidden in the night-blooming Glaze Lily's petals. Due to Emilie's intervention, Sylvain survives the attempt on his life and goes on to face trial for his previously unpunished crimes.
