Xifan

Last updated 2026-07-09

Xifan was a famous calligraphy master from Liyue who later studies swordsmanship, becoming a master of both arts. He documented the knowledge of swordmanship he had gained in the stone tablet "Chronicle of Cleansing Ink," preserving the knowledge for those who wished to follow a chivalrous path. Rare annotated version of the text, based directly on the stone tablets, existed, and Xingqiu's brother owned a copy, which he lent to Xingqiu.[1] Xingqiu studied the text, hoping to improve both his swordsmanship and his poor calligraphy.[2]

Xifan also had an adversarial relationship with another calligraphy and swordsmanship great, the then-Tianquan of the Liyue Qixing. The Tianquan didn't get along with Xifan and left long annotations nitpicking Xifan's flaws and leaving backhanded criticisms so subtle they could almost be mistaken as true compliments. The pair would exchange responses to each other that appeared in the annotated text, with the Tianquan even going so far as to suggest Xifan never learned to sign his own name.[2]
