Dialogue

(First interaction)
Chrissas the Great: Halt, commoner. Before you stands the Emperor of the Holy Lytian Empire, Chrissas the Great.
Chrissas the Great: The Empire's finances are in a bit of a... hard place at the moment. So, should you choose to employ me and pay a reasonable salary... no, no, a state tax. I shall appoint you as Imperial Chancellor.
Chrissas the Great: Fair warning, though, there are three things I don't do: dirty work, hard labor, and anything dangerous. Unless... unless you're offering free food and board.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Don't make me call the cops.
Chrissas the Great: Hold it right there! Calling the police won't do you any good. I am a bona fide emperor, and I have diplomatic immunity.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Is that any way to look for a job?
Chrissas the Great: Every move I make represents the dignity of the Empire. Anything that demeans the state's honor... will cost extra.
Chrissas the Great: Well, no point hiding it anymore. Stooping to work a common job... it was never by choice.
Chrissas the Great: Lytia has nothing to its name but poverty. Billions of mouths, all waiting for me to feed them. Every extra day I spend unemployed here, my people go another day hungry.
Chrissas the Great: So as far as I'm concerned, it's not just any job. It's the job of saving an entire planet!
Icon Dialogue Arrow Why don't you just pawn off some planetary assets?
Chrissas the Great: Pawn? Anything remotely valuable was mortgaged to the IPC ages ago.
Chrissas the Great: Now all that's left of Lytia is a wasteland. Even the Antimatter Legion would tip their hats to that kind of thorough devastation.
Icon Dialogue Arrow Why aren't the citizens out working?
Chrissas the Great: In Lytia, going out to work is a privilege reserved for the Emperor.
Chrissas the Great: Every man, woman, and child in the realm — from the ninety-nine-year-old to the toddler just finding their feet — took out a loan just to scrape together my coronation gift: a single ticket to Astropolis.
Chrissas the Great: After all this talking, it seems you're still not interested in hiring me. No matter. An emperor always finds a way.
Chrissas the Great: But if any suitable work comes up in the future, be sure to contact me immediately. I'll be keeping the Chancellor's position open for you, just in case!

(Subsequent interactions)
Chrissas the Great: Commoner, we meet again. Have you come to offer me work?
Icon Dialogue Talk I'm actually pretty curious about you.
Chrissas the Great: I'm currently between engagements, so go ahead with your questions.
Icon Dialogue Talk Why is Lytia so broke?
Chrissas the Great: Ah... a hundred years ago, Lytia was one of the wealthiest planets in the entire cosmos.
Chrissas the Great: The underground of the Lytian Empire was packed with veins of rare metals. You could grab a shovel, dig anywhere at random, and the ore scraps alone would cover an ordinary person's weekly expenses without breaking a sweat.
Chrissas the Great: This isn't just fortune falling into your lap. This is fortune grabbing you by the jaw and shoving it down your throat.
Chrissas the Great: But here's the thing about resources: moderate development is a blessing, while overdevelopment is a curse.
Chrissas the Great: Once the ore veins ran dry, the IPC cut Lytia loose from its trade network. And since the Lytians had long grown used to living off the fat of the land, it took barely two generations to burn through every last bit of the family fortune.
Chrissas the Great: Nowadays, Lytians can proudly claim the title of "the cosmos' least developed planet." And as for me... well, I suppose I humbly hold the crown of "the cosmos' most impoverished emperor."
Icon Dialogue Talk One person, supporting an entire nation?
Chrissas the Great: Ah, the magic of market economics. Shoutout to whatever economist invented "exchange rates," truly a gift to civilization.
Chrissas the Great: Take Astropolis, for example. What can a single credit even get you there? Probably just a withering look of contempt from the shopkeeper.
Chrissas the Great: But in a remote segmentum like Lytia, a single credit can buy enough food to feed an entire city.
Chrissas the Great: After covering my own basic expenses from my monthly wages, the remittances I send back are enough not only to sustain the entire nation, but also to patch the leaky roof of the imperial palace and buy the empress a new linen dress.
Chrissas the Great: My next move is to massively boost the Lytian Empire's labor export industry.
Chrissas the Great: Gonna hustle hard enough to buy tickets for the whole imperial family, from the Emperor Emeritus all the way down to the little princes, and ship every last one of them off to Astropolis to work odd jobs.
Icon Dialogue Talk What do you do for work in Astropolis?
Chrissas the Great: Embarrassing as it is to admit, Lytia may be a poor state, but I am still its ruler. Before coming here, I lived a life of ease and privilege, with not a single practical skill to my name.
Chrissas the Great: Fortunately, I have found my niche: playing the role of an emperor.
Chrissas the Great: You see, the Interastral Peace Entertainment produces a mountain of films and TV series every year. Court dramas were especially all the rage for a while there.
Chrissas the Great: The refined mannerisms, commanding presence, and sheer imperious authority required to portray an emperor, especially that air of absolute dominance, aren't things your average actor can just pick up.
Chrissas the Great: As for me, I was right in my element. You should've heard me when I first arrived in Astropolis. I spoke with far more authority than I do now.
Chrissas the Great: One word and it's "off with their heads," another word and it's "eighty lashes." During the audition, I even asked the director, "How would you like me to play this?" The director said, "Just... tone it down a notch."
Chrissas the Great: Alas, audiences are a fickle bunch, and court dramas have long since fallen out of fashion. With no roles left to play, I must seek a new path forward.
Icon Dialogue Exit Let's catch up another time.
Chrissas the Great: If any suitable work comes up, be sure to contact me at once.
