Nancy

Last updated 2025-10-08

Nancy is an NPC on Penacony, located in Dreamflux Reef.

Profile

Nancy is a violin automated instrument, previously owned by Asna. After Penacony got its independence, Asna founded the Iris Family and Nancy became an exhibit in a museum — doomed to never meet again. But then, She was brought back to Dreamflux Reef by some thief. She saw how this city had sprouted and took shape, and she recorded all these vinyl records of the songs she and Asna once played together. She keeps their promise "Bring joy to the world through music," and now operates the Auto Band shop in Dreamflux Reef.

Dialogue

(First interaction)
Nancy: Welcome... Oooh, don't tell me we've got another new guest visiting today? All these new faces in town, I can't keep track of them all.
Nancy: I heard lots of people are coming over from the Dreamscapes because of accidents. You look to be the same...
Nancy: Oh. I'm sorry. It's far too easy to natter on about yourself once you get to my age. Let me give you a brief rundown of what we do.
Nancy: We're the only band in all of the Dreamflux Fortress. All our staff here are talking automated instruments, just like me.
Nancy: Our main trade is also in automated instruments. For just a few Alfalfa credits, customers can take home the instrument of their choice and have it play for you at home. Of course, I personally am not for sale.
Nancy: We also sell our own vinyl records here... Come here and flip through some if you're ever bored or feeling down in the dumps.
Nancy: ...I mean after all, our store motto here is "Bring joy to the world through music."

(If Nancy's Emotion is set to Calm)
Nancy: *Oooh* You're back... Welcome back. Can I help you with anything?
Icon Dialogue Shop I'd like to see the products.
Nancy: No problem. Pick out whatever you like.
(Opens shop page)
Icon Dialogue Talk Are you up for a chat?
Nancy: Sure can. I'd be more than happy to help you out however I can.
Icon Dialogue Talk Tell me a little about your band.
Nancy: Our band... it's been around since this city was first founded.
Nancy: But back then, I was the only one in the store. I'd often perform for people, and sometimes I'd cut a few records — always adding a little spice to shake up the boring lives of the settlers.
Nancy: But then, later... other automated instruments gradually came along, most of them with some kind of rough, storied past — and I took them all in.
Nancy: Gradually, things started to grow more lively here: we'd play for people and put the money we earned toward everyday maintenance... every day was a full and busy one. Everybody's music was brimming with joy in every note, and people got to feel a lot of joy as they listened.
Nancy: Well, that's about all there is... Anything else you'd like to know?
Icon Dialogue Talk Tell me more about automated instruments.
Nancy: My staff all come from different places with different backgrounds, but they also all have one thing in common: everyone is an outstanding musician.
Nancy: Mr. Growl's voice is rough and bold, and his bellows are every bit as wild as his appearance — just take care to avoid his constantly-breaking strings.
Nancy: Baron Oboe has a sonorous singing voice and a broad range. He's a classy gentleman who's good with graceful tunes — but he's always making fun for himself and playing whatever music he likes. If you buy him, make sure you teach him a little bit about humility, first.
Nancy: The other staff all have their own unique playing style and tricks. If you're interested, why don't you go and take a look for yourself?
Icon Dialogue Exit That's enough chit-chat for now.
Nancy: *Oooh* I didn't realize that we'd been chatting for so long...
Icon Dialogue Exit That's all. Bye-bye.
Nancy: Come back and take a look around next time you feel like you need the joy of music.

(If Nancy's Emotion is set to Angry)
Nancy: I hope that kid gets better soon...

(If Nancy's Emotion is set to Happy)
Nancy: I love my life at the moment...

Clockwork

Icon Dialogue Clockwork Activate Clockwork
Icon Clockwork Calm Calm
Nancy: Would you like to rent an instrument, or buy a record?
Nancy: Or perhaps you've come to have a little chat with me...
Icon Clockwork Angry Angry
Nancy: Oh. It's you. Sorry. I'm working on something tricky right at the moment... would you mind if I vented my spleen a little?
Nancy: Here's the thing: We've added a new member to the band recently, Mr. Trumpet, who's a little introverted, kind of cute, and very likable... But the problem is, he's too "likable."
Nancy: I told you before that most of the band came from previously rough lives... like Miss Accordion, who was mutated by a corroded Dreamscape, Miss Flute, who was abandoned by her partner for years, or Mr. French Horn, who was grievously wounded by some humans playing a childish prank...
Nancy: *Oooh* Don't worry. These aren't secrets at all and everyone has left their dark pasts well behind them. So then, getting back to Mr. Trumpet...
Nancy: His timbre has been corroded by memoria, but that's not the real problem. He's... got an inferiority complex. He seems to be really insecure even though everyone constantly reassures and looks after him.
Nancy: And I didn't realize until just the other day that... he had been rehearsing in secrecy the whole time, day and night, until his pistons started to get worn down from overuse. And he was doing this because... he had this thought that he could only avoid abandonment through perfect musical performances.
Nancy: ...Maybe I overreacted, but I felt really angry at the time — not at Mr. Trumpet, of course, but rather directed at myself.
Nancy: Did I not give it enough sense of security because I failed to care for him enough? Was it because I didn't do everything I could for him...
Nancy: I should... no, I MUST do everything I can for my "kinsmen"... right?

Icon Clockwork Happy Happy
Nancy: Oh. A young customer who's one of our regulars just came by asking if I wanted to go back to the sweeter Dreamscapes with him.
Nancy: But what am I going to do there? My heart's already too old to play those cheery songs once more. So I asked him: "Don't tell me you're trying to take me back to that display cabinet in the museum?"
Nancy: Haha... that poor kid seemed pretty disappointed, but at this age I find the sweet dreams too noisy. Things are perfect where I am now.
Nancy: Here, I have my band and my "kinsmen". Through just a razor-thin piece of glass, I can observe them performing — plus all the joy that their melodies bring people.
Nancy: That's a kind of pure, true joy... I'd seen it in those prisoners' eyes. I'd felt it at Asna's fingertips, and now it had arrived once more before me...
Nancy: "Bring joy to the world through music"... Look at me now, Asna. This promise of ours: I've kept my word until the very end.

Icon Clockwork Sad Sad
Nancy: I'm actually an old double bass — back when I was born, Penacony was still a prison.
Nancy: Back then, the Dreamscapes were wild and primitive. The people were bold and savage, too — completely unhinged. It was then and there that I first met my partner, the sun around whom my everything orbits: Asna.
Nancy: We used to play cheerful music together, and the prisoners would gather around to watch and listen, their eyes lighting up. When the melody ramped up, they would cheer heartily, dancing to the rhythm of the beat...
Nancy: My strings would reverberate with her voice throughout the sky of that Primordial Dreamscape, echoing in the brilliant starlight. Those days... may just be the happiest days I've ever had in all my years.
Nancy: Later, after that wolf and the passengers of that train liberated the prison, Asna became what they called "The Mother of Iris" and I became an exhibit in a museum — doomed to never meet again.
Nancy: But then, I was brought back here by some thief. I saw how this city had sprouted and took shape, and I recorded all these vinyl records of the songs we'd once played together.
Nancy: But those songs, they no longer felt alive. They lacked a soul, just like I lacked her shadow inside my dreams...
Nancy: *sigh*... Sorry for nattering on so long... an old double bass like me can never resist chatting with people... because chatting makes it harder to forget the melody of those strings...
