Rashomon

Rashomon is an Achievement in the category The Memories We Share.

To unlock this achievement, interact with the observers at the scene of a car accident at Glaux Avenue, then speak with the knocked-down Intellitron and the Pepeshi in the car. After leaving and re-entering the area, speak with the Bloodhound Family investigator. After leaving and re-entering the area again, interact with the observers to obtain the achievement.

Bantering Man: Intellitrons are not organic life at all. How can you call them tough-skinned and meaty — they're made of steel.

Bantering Lady: That car looks quite expensive. I wonder what happened to the people in it...

Bantering Pepeshi: Ha, if the person driving somehow got knocked awake, they'd probably be steaming mad in the Dreampool.

Bantering Man: That's hilarious — but in Penacony, it's totally normal.

Knocked-down Intellitron

Knocked-Down Intellitron: This limo nearly broke the glue seal on my outer shell.

Are you all good?

Knocked-Down Intellitron: Nothing good about it. This shell of mine is hand-polished, but now it's all dinged up.

What happened here?

Knocked-Down Intellitron: Can't you tell? I got hit by a car! My poor hand-polished shell... It's all scratched up.

Knocked-Down Intellitron: I was just walking along the street as per normal when that car suddenly drove halfway across the lane to hit me —Who knows whether this was a hate crime targeting silicon-based lifeforms!

Knocked-Down Intellitron: If he can't make a satisfactory settlement, then he'll never hear the end of this from me!

Wouldn't that be too harsh?

Knocked-Down Intellitron: What's so harsh about that? If you can afford to drive that kind of car in Penacony, then money is just a number to you.

You're right. He should pay you compensation.

Knocked-Down Intellitron: Looks like you've got a good head on your shoulders. If you can afford to drive that kind of car in Penacony, then money is just a number to you.

(Remain silent)

Knocked-Down Intellitron: I know these guys all too well. If you can afford to drive that kind of car in Penacony, then money is just a number to you.

Knocked-Down Intellitron: Since they can bring their money from outside into the Dreamscape, then don't blame me for taking their money from their pockets back to the outside.

Knocked-Down Intellitron: I really have to hand it to my sturdy body this time — carbon-based lifeforms can't handle that, haha!

(Interact with Knocked-down Intellitron again): Knocked-down Intellitron; Knocked-Down Intellitron: If this guy can't explain himself, we'll have a problem!

Investigate

The car that just hit someone — or got hit by someone — is stopped in place. No sound can be heard within.

Knock on the window.

Wealthy Pepeshi: Wh—who's that? Didn't I tell you not to bug me until the Family gets here!?

I'm here to sort out the situation.

Wealthy Pepeshi: What's there to sort out? Aren't the facts already clear enough...

Wealthy Pepeshi: ...I was just driving on the street when that iron skull suddenly jumped out from the side and rammed straight into my car.

Wealthy Pepeshi: My car got sent off-course by several meters with a loud bang, as if I was hit by a rock. It's outrageous!

Wealthy Pepeshi: Is this how they run insurance scams these days? So blatant! I'll have you know that I have contacts in the Alfalfa Family!

Shouldn't you pay compensation after hitting someone with a car?

Wealthy Pepeshi: Compensation? Is the dent on my car is [sic] bigger, or is the dent on him bigger? I'm the victim here, okay?

Were you really just driving normally?

Wealthy Pepeshi: How else? What kind of grudge would I have against him to deliberately crash a car this pricey into him?

(Remain silent)

Wealthy Pepeshi: Just look at the size of the dent on my car. I'm just distraught...

Wealthy Pepeshi: This is a new car that I just picked up! One of only 12 Steinway Raptors throughout the whole Dreamscape! Do you really think he could pay THIS back?

(Interact with car again): Investigate; Wealthy Pepeshi: He dares put the blame on my head? I'll teach him a lesson!

Bloodhound Family Investigator

Bloodhound Family Investigator: There's no way to get to the truth by only listening to one side. If no other witnesses can be found, the Family won't consider your contradictory statements as evidence...

Bloodhound Family Investigator: Young (man/lady) over here, are you a witness? We're trying to solicit information about a car accident, and we can make it worth your while.

Bloodhound Family Investigator: If you were on the scene and can tell us clearly what happened, The Family is willing to offer you some credits as a reward.

The Intellitron and Pepeshi both shoot you a glance that needs no further explanation: Say something good about me!

That Intellitron's trying to extort him.

The Intellitron's body shakes violently. You can't make out his eyes, but his anger smacks you in the face — is that humiliation at being wronged, or the desperation of a cornered beast?

Knocked-Down Intellitron: You think this is all fake? You think I deliberately got close to the car so it could crash into me? Who on earth would ever be so stupid?

Knocked-Down Intellitron: Y—You are just beyond reason!

Before the Intellitron could keep going off, the Bloodhound cuts off further chatter with a look.

Bloodhound Family Investigator: Anyway, thank you for giving us some clues. Here's that reward The Family promised. We'll reach a verdict on the case soon.

That Pepeshi deliberately clipped him.

The Pepeshi is startled as the fluff ball on his head twirls back and forth in rage. His feet stamp and stomp, determined to stomp right through the ground.

Wealthy Pepeshi: N—Nonsense! Would I use a brand-new car to crash into an iron skull I've even [sic] seen before? Even if I wanted to, I'd at least drive a cheaper car!

Wealthy Pepeshi: Oh, I see. You two are in cahoots, aren't you? It's all for my money, isn't it? Money!

Before the Pepeshi can keep going off, the Bloodhound cuts off further chatter with a look.

Bloodhound Family Investigator: Anyway, thank you for giving us some clues. Here's that reward The Family promised. We'll reach a verdict on the case soon.

I didn't witness the whole thing.

The Pepeshi and Intellitron are both stunned for a moment, before quickly returning their focus onto each other — you didn't support either side, but nor did you defame either of them.

Bloodhound Family Investigator: Really...? Looks like we'll have to find a few other witnesses, then.

Bloodhound Family Investigator: But thanks for the cooperation. Be careful when crossing the street to avoid similar accidents from occurring.

Bantering Pepeshi: Hey, did you hear? They reached a verdict on that accident.

(If the player testified against the Intellitron)

Bantering Man: You mean the Intellitron that hit that car? I think the tin was scamming that Raptor. Must've been insane with wanting money!

Bantering Lady: I heard The Family found the Intellitron at fault and made him pay out a huge sum to the owner... brutal.

Bantering Lady: You could buy all the SoulGlad in the Dreamscape for the price of one Steinway Raptor. If that Intellitron is serious about paying off the damages, it'll have to peel itself like an orange and sell the parts for scrap.

Bantering Pepeshi: That guy's car wasn't really damaged, but he still demanded such an astronomical figure... Seeing other people getting money for nothing somehow feels even worse than me losing money!

Bantering Man: Why don't you just copy him and ride a few laps in a luxury car... Or doesn't your family own a luxury car? That means you don't work hard enough. Why don't you reflect on that?

Bantering Lady: Isn't that rather harsh to say?

(If the player testified against the Pepeshi)

Bantering Man: You mean the car that hit the Intellitron? My take is that the luxury car smashed into a heap of scrap for massive losses.

Bantering Lady: I heard The Family found the Pepeshi at fault and asked him to pay back maintenance costs for the Intellitron... But that fine's just a drop in the bucket for a Pepeshi.

Bantering Pepeshi: Do you think all Pepeshi are rich? That stereotype's a little too much — I don't have any money and I'm a Pepeshi!

Bantering Man: Are you proud of having no money? Can't you have a good think about whether you've worked hard enough before complaining about it?

Bantering Lady: Come on, let's not talk about stuff like this in the dream...

(If the player did not testify against either side)

Bantering Man: You mean that traffic accident? I think it's steel scraped steel — and neither side won.

Bantering Lady: I heard The Family deliberated that it was a simple accident, and in the end neither Pepeshi nor Intellitron received any damages.

Bantering Pepeshi: Or maybe they reached a private settlement. After all, if you keep pushing for too long, there's not going to be any money left to get.

Bantering Man: I thought we'd see blood in the streets. That's disappointing.

Bantering Lady: Isn't that kind of inappropriate to say?

Bantering Man: Why do you care? Anyway, I'm not the one who got hit or the one running my car into people. I'm just a guy here rubber-necking.

Bantering Man: Besides, does anyone here actually know each other in the real world?

Trivia

The achievement's name is a reference to the Rashomon effect, a storytelling and writing method in which individuals involved in an event give contradictory accounts of the event.
