Dialogue

Icon Dialogue Agent Talk to Xiao'Zhao

Xiao'Zhao is chatting with vendors near the Failume Heights market. Let's go check it out.
(Idle)
Fruit-Selling Grandma: Oh, Xiao'Zhao is here!
Sweet Potato-Roasting Grandpa: Hey there, Xiao'Zhao!
(Talk to Zhao)
Zhao: Hey everyone! How's business today?
Sweet Potato-Roasting Grandpa: Can't complain! The weather's getting cooler lately, and more people are buying roasted sweet potatoes!
Zhao: Yeah, the temperature really drops when the sun goes down — business would definitely pick up if you set up shop during that time.
Fruit-Selling Grandma: We've been getting lots of tourists visiting the Waifei Peninsula lately — fruit's been selling way faster than before!
Zhao: Oh yeah? That's great news.
Xiao'Zhao spots you but can't break away to say hi right away. After chatting with some folks on the street, she finally comes over with a slightly apologetic look.

Story Description: You meet Zhao at the market, turns out she's friends with a lot of vendors. She insists it's all just about mutually beneficial transactions, but everyone actually seems to like her a lot.

Zhao: Oops... sorry about that. I know a lot of people around here.
Icon Dialogue Talk That's impressive.
(ProtagonistProtagonist): That's impressive! You know so many people, and you're on good terms with all of (‍them.them. / them~them~‍)
Zhao: On good terms... Honestly, it's mostly surface-level.
Zhao: But if you want to learn, I can show you how.
Zhao: Truth is, a lot of valuable information only circulates at places like this... that's why I need to be on good terms with these folks.
Icon Dialogue Talk Everyone likes you.
(ProtagonistProtagonist): It seems everyone really likes you (‍here.here. / here~here~‍)
Zhao: Actually, it's not like that...
Zhao: It's only because I need to know these people.
Zhao: You know how it is. A lot of valuable information only circulates at places like this.
Zhao: I make regular purchases at these stalls. I don't haggle, and sometimes I don't even bother taking change.
Zhao: If you want your face known to these vendors, being generous is a must.
Zhao: And besides spending money, doing small favors when you can helps too. Time is a cost just like anything else.
Zhao: For example, when the old lady who sells fruit was feeling unwell last week, I took her to the hospital.
Zhao: And when the roasted sweet potato vendor's grandkid got lost, I went looking for him and found him in a back alley.
Zhao: ...There's a lot more. Point is, I go out of my way to keep on good terms with them.
Zhao: And in return, when something happens, the information they have becomes my best leverage.
Zhao: I keep up these connections for that reason.
Zhao: So... what do you think? Sounds kinda bad, huh?
Icon Dialogue Talk Sounds kinda weird...
(ProtagonistProtagonist): (‍Sounds kinda bad.Sounds kinda bad. / Hmm... sounds a bit weird.Hmm... sounds a bit weird.‍) How do I put this... It's a little cold, maybe?[Note 1]
Zhao: I figured you'd say that.
Zhao: And there's nothing wrong with you for thinking that. I'm the one with the problem here...
Icon Dialogue Talk That sounds kinda normal, I guess?
(ProtagonistProtagonist): Hmm... how do I put this? That actually sounds kinda normal? Whatever your motive, you did help these people.
Zhao: You... actually think that? I thought...
Zhao: Ahem. Anyway, on the other hand, I suppose I'm a pretty valuable customer to these vendors.
Zhao: That's why everyone is so nice to me...
Zhao: Ahchoo!
Zhao's loud sneeze draws everyone's attention...
Zhao: S—Sorry. I think I've caught a bit of a cold...
Fruit-Selling Grandma: A cold? That's not good. I'll fetch some medicine. Being sick is not fun!
Zhao: Thank you, ma'am...
Fruit-Selling Grandma: Oh, don't mention it. You've done so much for us before. Now you take care and get well soon, okay?
Sweet Potato-Roasting Grandpa: I've got some sweet potatoes fresh out of the oven. Here, having something warm will make you feel better!
Zhao: This is too much, grandpa... I can't eat it all...
Sweet Potato-Roasting Grandpa: Nonsense! You've got a friend right here, don't you? You two can share it!
Everyone crowds around to check on Zhao, stuffing her arms with food and remedies...
When she's got her arms full, they slowly return to their stalls...
Icon Dialogue Talk Everyone really likes you.
(ProtagonistProtagonist): Everyone really likes you, and they care about you. They already treat you like a friend, not just because you're a valuable customer, but because you're you.
Zhao: ...I—Is that so? I always thought...
Zhao: But this kind of genuine care... feels like something only true friends would give... right?
Zhao nervously grips the hem of her dress.
After a long moment of hesitation, she finally gathers the courage and looks up.
Zhao: Th—Then... what about you?
Icon Dialogue Talk I like you too of course!
(ProtagonistProtagonist): I really like you too of (‍course.course. / course!course!‍) Aren't we friends already?
Zhao: Yeah... that's right! Exactly!
Icon Dialogue Talk I'm the same as everyone here.
(ProtagonistProtagonist): I'm the same as everyone here. We all like (‍you.you. / you!you!‍)
Zhao: T—Thanks...
Zhao: Then... let's finish all this stuff together!
Zhao: ...Well, except for the cold medicine!
Zhao: But if you want to stick with me through the rough stuff and choke down the bitter cold medicine with me, I'm not gonna stop you~
Zhao: Come to think of it, it's been a while since I shared tasty food with friends...
Zhao: I'm glad I ran into you today!
