Veronica

Veronica is a commission-exclusive NPC, first appearing in Flora of the Blooming Valley, and a former member of the New Eridu Defense Force.

Profile

Due to her time as a medic in the Defense Force, Veronica greatly cares for the well being of Intelligent Constructs, and took drastic measures to preserve the dignity of the Intelligent Construct soldiers she cared for following their deaths. She has particularly disdain for Seed after their various interactions, despite having been a close friend of Seed Sr. prior to his death.

History

Veronica joined the Defense Force sometime before the Fall of the Old Capital. During her time in the military she served as a medic for many Intelligent Constructs who served at the time. These were mass-produced Intelligent Constructs, and as such they all had the Iron-Order defense system installed in to their logic cores, something Veronica, along with many others in the Defense Force, found particularly egregious. She befriended many of her patients, one in particular being Seed Sr., who had rescued her the first time she had ever been lost in a Hollow.^[1]

During the aftermath of the Old Capital's fall, Seed Sr. brought an orphaned girl he found within Hollow Zero to her, and she examined the girl, concluding that she "had no heart". She also checked on Seed Sr., who had removed a part of his logic core that contained the Iron Order system. She exclaimed at him that this was a suicidal act, but he told her that he had done it in part to prove that he had a heart, and that he planned to take the girl in and care for her for as long as he had remaining.^[1] Before his final shutdown, he entrusted her with a data card that contained the coordinates for where he had first met Seed, though he didn't explain why.

Many of the Intelligent Constructs that served the Defense Force eventually died over their course of their tenure, with Veronica grieving for them. Higher ups within the Defense Force began a plan to repurpose the bodies of these individuals by installing new logic cores in to them, which caused Veronica to find a way to stop this, with a plan to work with the rebels and, hopefully, figure out a way to revive her fallen comrades. She hoped to get help from Seed, whom she hadn't spoken to since before Seed Sr.'s death, but after seeing Seed had no true conception of death, she refused to work with her, instead using Hollow Raiders to steal various military mechs that would then help move the Intelligent Constructs bodies to safety. Her plan was interrupted by Seed and Phaethon, and in a freak accident caused by one of the Hollow Raiders; Heric, Seed had to fight off a Miasma Corrupted Terror Raptor, and in the chaos of the fight the Intelligent Construct's remains were heavily damaged with many being destroyed. Veronica confronted Seed about this, with Seed's newfound realization of the finality of death causing her strange power to become unstable, causing what remained of the constructs to self immolate.^[2]

Emotionally devestated, Veronica turned herself in to recieve judgement for her actions, though beforehand she gave the data disc Seed Sr. had entrusted her with to Seed, understanding now that he had likely planned for her to see how she had developed before giving it to her. Following this, despite the crimes she had commited, she recieved support from a "conservative mechanist faction" who agreed with her course of action, and thus avoided being imprisoned. She is now aligned with this faction as they have begun rising in power, though she understands she is, in her own words "another pawn they've fished out to use."^[3]
