Seed Sr.

Oh, and don't forget the most important thing—smile, okay? Smile a lot.
Seed Sr. is an NPC and a member of
Obol Squad. After the death of his logic core, his body is still used by New Eridu Defense Force as a manually piloted mech.
Profile
Seed Sr. was a member of Obol Squad, and the guardian of Seed, whom he found in Hollow Zero and decided to take in and raise. He was mentioned to be "asleep" (actually logic core-dead) as of the last few years, with Seed herself now taking over his duties by piloting him manually.
As the original artillerist of Obol Squad and a mech, Seed Sr. is equipped with several destructive weapons, including wrist-mounted and homing missile launchers attached to his back. The latter are capable of being electrically enhanced and are part of a jet/cannon hybrid Seed is capable of summoning and controlling. His limbs are also capable of being used in hand-to-hand combat, and he has also been fitted with a cloaking device by Seed.[6]
Despite being an Intelligent Construct, Seed Sr. wished to prove he had a heart, going as far as to tamper with his own systems, risking his life to do so. A notable hobby of Seed Sr. was gardening, as he was often seen tending to flowers and growing his own plants in his spare time.[2]
History
Seed Sr. was a mass-produced military Intelligent Construct made by the New Eridu Defense Force (then known as just Seed), and, as was standard for these machines, had the defense system "Iron Order" installed into his logic core: a system that could override his personal autonomy to ensure he couldn't disobey orders. Veronica, a fellow Defense Force member, served as the medic for him and the other Intelligent Constructs in the military, and became close friends with Seed after he rescued her from a Hollow.
Seed served faithfully as a soldier. He studied the methods of calculating Hollow frequency changes, which led him to try and prevent a show at the Ballet Twins after he had discerned the possibility of a Hollow appearing was exceedingly high. While this event would still lead to the Hollow's creation, he immediately worked to protect the civilians caught up in it, and afterwards helped the survivors fight for compensation. He also visited the Outer Ring several times, intervening to prevent Hollow Raiders from targeting the area's oil resources and fighting side by side with former Overlord Pompey.[7]
During the Fall of the Old Capital, Seed worked to find survivors, making seven trips into Hollow Zero and saving dozens of lives, including multiple residents of Waifei Peninsula. Amidst the chaos and ruins of the disaster, he found an orphaned girl, who had inexplicably managed to survive in the Hollow unassisted for half a month. The Iron Order program immediately perceived her as a "high-risk target" and made Seed activate self-defense measures to eliminate her. Still, he fought back against his systems, heavily damaging his logic core but overcoming the program and escorting the girl to safety. Before they left, Seed planted some seeds in the area where he met her.[8]
After returning from Hollow Zero, the orphan girl was inspected by Veronica, who noted her apparent lack of a "heart" as well as her unnaturally high aptitude for ether. She also found out that he had destroyed the self-defense system, which she stated was comparable to suicide, as the damage done would eventually cause him to shut down permanently, and there was no means of repairing him. Despite this, Seed was unfazed, and took it upon himself to take the girl in and named her Flora, teaching her about the ropes of life, to prove that both of them were capable of feeling and having a heart. He was also intent on finding out the mysteries behind her existence, as Flora had no memories of her time prior to Seed finding her. He began investigating the Fall of the Old Capital, believing that doing so was necessary to find out about Flora's past.[8]
To this end he joined Obol Squad, and though he initially kept his motivations for joining a secret, Flora would accidentally cause some of the Defense Force mechs to go berserk before bursting in to flames as a result of an unknown power she had, which prompted Captain Magus, Orphie, and Trigger to confront him. He explained his intentions, his reasoning, and also revealed he likely only had months to live, requesting that Obol Squad take care of Flora after his passing, and also not to reveal his death to her when it eventually happened.[8]
Over time, Seed's condition worsened, and he began to randomly shut down for extended periods of time, which he explained to Flora as "falling asleep". Wanting to ensure she could take care of herself in the future, Seed taught Flora how to pilot him, with "Seed" eventually becoming her codename, while his changed to "Seed Sr."[9] Before he passed away, he promised Seed that he would return once she became stronger.[10] One of his final thoughts around this time was wondering if the seeds he'd planted had grown into a field of flowers by now.[2] Before he completly shut down, Seed Sr. left a message inside himself, and entrusted a special data card to Veronica, which contained the coordinates in Hollow Zero where he first met Flora.[1]
The squad collectively agreed to tell Seed that he was currently on a special mission, and so couldn't currently be active or speak to her. Very shortly after Seed Sr.'s death, Obol Squad gained its final member, Soldier 11. As she had never meet Seed Sr., the rest of the team didn't explain to her what his actual situation was, but she immediately recognised how important he must have been to Seed. Due to this, when she found his phone still in the dorms, she began using it to text Seed as if she was Seed Sr. over the course of the next few years.[1]
After Obol Squad's confrontation with Isolde, Seed established a safe house in Hollow Zero as she contemplated methods to bring Seed Sr. back from his "sleep". The resulting events led to her confronting Veronica, and in the ensuing incident, she discovered that he was truly dead. Veronica gave the coordinates he had entrusted to her to Seed, which Phaethon and Fairy used to locate the spot in Hollow Zero where Seed and Seed Sr. had first met. Seed brought Seed Sr. to the monument, now surrounded by flowers that had bloomed in the 11 years since they were first planted, with her tears activating a mechanism in him that then played his final message to her, allowing her to finally process the grief of his death.[1]
His final message now imparted to her, Seed decided to continue to try and uncover the mysteries behind the Fall of the Old Capital (and her own past) in his place, while still piloting Seed Sr. and taking him along some of her adventures.
