Andersdotter

Anya "Marie" Andersdotter,^[2] also known by her codename "M," was a member of the Hexenzirkel. She was the author of the renowned storybook The Boar Princess and was said to be an exceptional writer.^[9]

Profile

Andersdotter was a human from Mondstadt^[2] who never received magic or combat training, and was "simply ordinary" in comparison to other members of the Hexenzirkel.^[10] She was described as "A legend that never ends" for her stories, and her prose was able to teach Alice the meaning of grief.^[9]

In The Mages' Tea Party cutscene, Andersdotter is represented first by the cover of The Boar Princess, and later by the titular Boar Princess and her fox and turtle companions.^[11]

In Simulanka, she created the fictional character "Durin" despite warnings from Barbeloth that "Durin" will likely share the fate of his real world counterpart.

Appearance

Andersdotter is a slender woman with pale skin and medium-length mint hair that curls softly at the ends, with several loose strands framing her face and the rest gathered under an large hat decorated with pale gold trim and feather-like accents. She wears a refined, star-themed dress in deep navy and white, with layered fabrics that create a soft gradient from dark blue to icy blue, adorned with delicate gold patterns and small, shimmering motifs. Her sleeves are puffed at the shoulders and fitted along the arms, ending in neat cuffs, while a decorative sash wraps around her waist and trails behind her like a cape. She also wears sleek, high-heeled shoes in matching blue tones.

Story

Andersdotter was the last to join the Hexenzirkel, and allegedly the first to leave, according to Nicole.^[12]

When Ioanna Ivanovna decided that she would leave the group after marrying, Andersdotter, Alice, Barbeloth, Nicole, and Rhinedottir wrote her a letter disguised as a prophecy, asking her to come visit them one last time before her wedding.^[9]

In her old age, Andersdotter once commented to the group that because her lifespan was much shorter than some of theirs, she wished to leave her storybook — The Boar Princess — to them, and that they may pass it to the next generations.^[11] As a human, she decided to end her life as such, refusing Alice's offer to extend her life via magic. Wanting to make the Durin in her story live a long and happy life, Andersdotter chose to continue his story despite warnings from Barbeloth that he would suffer the same fate as Rhinedottir's version and Alice wanting to keep him happy in the story. She continued writing well into her senior years, and before she died, she gave Alice a magical pen so that Durin could continue the story when she passed. The other witches, deciding to fulfill her request, chose to help her Durin become an individual entity, using Barbeloth's astrology, Rhinedottir's alchemy and Alice's magic to do so.

During the events of Durin's Story Quest, Durin is able to create his own fate with the help of his friends and the Hexenzirkel. He then created a manifestation of his mother so she could part ways with Alice, resolving her final regrets.

Trivia

• It is implied that The Little Witch and the Undying Fire was written by the other Hexenzirkel members for Andersdotter. However, it is implied that she passed away sometime during the writing of Vol. 5 and never got to read it.^{[Note 1]}
• Anya's middle name begins with "M." Despite having a first name and last name starting with "A," her codename became "M" as Alice had already claimed "A." Later in The Magic Known as Storytelling, Alice mentioned that "M" stands for "Marie."
• The three manuscripts found during the Event World Quest Narration Footnotes in Summertide Scales and Tales were signed by "M" as "A.A."
• It is implied that Andersdotter passed away some time after the Cataclysm, as in a flashback during The Solution of Fate, she is of old age as Alice says "things are finally returning to normal after that terrible calamity."

Etymology

• The name Andersdotter is likely a reference to the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, who is best known for his fairy tales. His mother's name is Anne Marie Andersdatter.
  • In Swedish, Andersdotter means "Ander's daughter," while Andersen means "Ander's son."
