Dialogue
- "Basement Dweller" and "Pauper": (I wonder why there are a hedgehog and a cat on the train. Are they a passenger's pets...?)
Excuse me, you two...
- "Basement Dweller" and "Pauper": (The hedgehog and the cat don't even look at you.)
- "Basement Dweller" and "Pauper": (The most terrible suffering lies precisely here — in the clear knowledge that there is no hope of an answer, no hope of love. Indifference is the pain of no longer being able to love.)
- "Basement Dweller" and "Pauper": (They are so arrogant... so cold and detached, as if they simply cannot understand you.)
- "Basement Dweller" and "Pauper": (Though, in truth, they can't. The hedgehog and the cat don't know what you're saying. They are just a hedgehog and a cat.)
Dear hedgehog, could you please tell me...
- Basement Dweller: (The hedgehog remains motionless, curled up on the soft cushion.)
- Basement Dweller: (It might be a sick hedgehog. A malicious hedgehog. An unremarkable hedgehog. Bitterly and futilely occupying a seat that does not belong to it.)
- Basement Dweller: (This is not its seat, nor will it ever be. The cushion is dying, and the hedgehog knows it. That is why it despises itself — almost to the point of hatred.)
- Basement Dweller: (Too much awareness is also a kind of illness. A true, complete illness.)
And you? What do you think?
- Pauper: (The cat lets out a soft meow, but also ignores you.)
- Pauper: (It does not have a seat of its own. Poor cats are always like this, prone to overthinking. They observe the world with different eyes, watching passersby.)
- Pauper: (The poor have no right to refuse true suffering — pain — yet still long for a dignity that was never meant to be theirs.)
Please forgive me. I meant no harm to your dignity.
- Pauper: (The cat does not answer. Perhaps out of anger, wounded pride, or a sense of insult. Not a lack of morality, but a very human reaction.)
- Pauper: (Or perhaps simply because it is only a cat.)
What nonsense am I saying...
