Snezhnaya
Last updated 2026-09-08
Do not fear the bitter cold, nor shrink from the trials ahead. Face the snowstorms roaring across the sky, cross the silent and solemn frozen wastes and the cities thundering with steel, and press on into a winter untouched by the mercy of the gods. There, raise your eyes to the unblemished Pale Star. Though the extreme cold has long extinguished the warmth of bygone days, stand with those whose hearts still blaze with desire and sorrow, and bear witness as the old world burns upon the ice.
Snezhnaya (Russian: Снежная Snezhnaya, "Snowy") is one of the seven nations of Teyvat and one of the major regions in Genshin Impact. It is the nation that worships the Tsaritsa, the Cryo Archon. The Fatui, a military force under her control, is particularly notorious for their unwavering devotion and unscrupulous methods in enacting her will. The autonomous region Nod-Krai is located at the southernmost part of Snezhnaya.
Archon Quest Chapter VII takes place in this region.
How to Access
Access to Snezhnaya is unlocked after completing the Archon Quest Prologue: Act III - Song of the Dragon and Freedom, but only a small part of Volkodlak Tundra is available. A Teleport Waypoint in Volkodlak Tundra is automatically unlocked and is where Chapter VII is automatically accepted. A very small area surrounding Sretomorozsk is available once players start Archon Quest Gunfire in the Silent Lands in Chapter VII: Act I - Everwinter Without Mercy, and the entire nation becomes accessible once said quest is completed. If the player attempts to progress without meeting the requirements, they will be quickly overwhelmed by the sheer cold.
Description
Snezhnaya is a region of perpetual winter storms; Nadia states that blizzards can last for a month straight and despite being in the midst of danger, its people look up to the sky and are just happy to be alive. Tartaglia claims that people would literally freeze to death if they didn't keep moving outside. At night, the Snezhnayan sky can see a beautiful aurora of dancing light.[3] Each settlement within Snezhnaya contains a Kresnik's Torch, which are fueled by Kresnik Kristall.
Technologically, Snezhnaya is much more advanced than the other regions on Teyvat. Venti states that the Fatui are the strongest out of the seven regions' military, which is supported by the fact that all of their known fighting members utilize elemental attacks. The description for Agent's Sacrificial Knife calls it a "weapon made with superior Snezhnayan technology." The Fatui Skirmishers wear mechanical suits of varying degrees, and some of its members use guns and cannons in battle. Alice, who has visited Snezhnaya, recalls seeing massive factories, which she wrote down in her Teyvat Travel Guide, and Il Dottore built a factory in Liyue to conduct Ruin Guard research which is fully automated.[4]
Snezhnaya is stated to be considered the same status as Mondstadt, as an independent and not belonging to any other nation, according to Jean.[5]
The Adventurers' Guild originates from Snezhnaya;[6] while this fact doesn't seem to be a secret, few people comment on it and the Guild doesn't face the same apprehension that people regard the Fatui with. It was also hinted that Katheryne, the receptionist(s) for the Adventurers' Guild, are a series of androids created for the role: the Katherynes in all regions so far are identical, and have "Error..." and "Rebooting..." idle quotes. This is further emphasized by the Katheryne stationed in Liyue, as she side-steps the Traveler questioning about her identity. Katheryne's identity as a "bionic Snezhnayan puppet" was confirmed by Nahida.[7]

Specific Exploration Mechanics
- Chill Zones - Some areas of Snezhnaya are far colder than others, and the intensity of the cold determines how fast Sheer Cold is accumulated. Players must keep themselves warm by finding kristall, either through outcrops or particular wildlife. Unlike the sheer cold system in Dragonspine, Snezhnaya's sheer cold affects all party members and deals more damage.
- The Shadow Realm - a corrupted region which are entered through rifts in the area. Players will enter a third-person shooter perspective and eliminate the corrupted entities inside the realm. They can enhance their guns by exploring more of Snezhnaya.
- Rail System - Players can utilize their train to travel across various stations situated across Snezhnaya. The train additionally has features such as a Crafting Bench, remote access to the Adventurers' Guild and a shooting range for practice.
- Prime Ice - players can harvest Prime Ice to create various contraptions and other items to aid them on their journey across Snezhnaya. Utilizing Stellar-Conduct reactions to create a Polestar Field near the construct will enhance its capabilities.
- Launching Platform: Launches the player upwards.
- Single-Use Construct Blueprints: Some areas may have a special item that can only be temporarily made in the area.
- Snowball Launcher: Transforms the player into a snowball for quick access across high elevated areas or down slopes.
- Link Mechanism: Can be used for quickly navigating across large and/or high elevation areas.
- Basic Heat Source: A simple heat source that will allow the player to remain warm without relying on Kresnik energy. The flame can be dragged a short distance away and can also be used to melt specific blocks of ice.
- Grappling Gun: Can be used to pull items or destroy weak walls with grappling hooks on them.
- Cubes: Can be used as stepping stones or to open/close obstacles.
- Jack Frosts: Jack Frost fae can be found across Snezhnaya. They may either require assistance in resolving a situation (such as saving them from monsters or playing a game). Some Jack Frosts can also be found holding signs, serving as a variant of Time Trial Challenges encountered in other areas.
Trivia
Screenshot from Teyvat Chapter Storyline Preview: Travail
- In the trailer Teyvat Chapter Storyline Preview: Travail, under the title of the quest Everwinter Without Mercy, the line written in Teyvat's Latin script reads "Ducam regina mea gloria haud pluribus impar," which roughly means "I, nigh unmatched Queen by my glory, shall be guide."
- The last part of the sentence is likely modified from nec pluribus impar, a Latin motto adopted by Louis XIV of France. The motto and its meaning are obscure and almost untranslatable.
- While Snezhnaya's Archon Quest Chapter was originally designated as Act VI in Travail, it was renumbered to Chapter VII following the addition of Song of the Welkin Moon, even though Song of the Welkin Moon was never officially designated Chapter VI.
- Tartaglia's flashback to his homeland in his character demo used Dragonspine as a backdrop, as Snezhnaya had not been modeled at the time; Dragonspine itself was released one version after Tartaglia.
- Official art was released with Tartaglia and Teucer for the Eastern Slavic holiday Maslenitsa (also known as Butter Lady, Butter Week, Crepe Week, or Cheesefare Week). It is possible that a holiday inspired by it is celebrated in Snezhnaya.
- Snezhnaya's release on August 12, 2026 was hinted at in the Behind the Scenes of Genshin Impact "To Snezhnaya and the Future" redemption code, Snezhnaya20260812, following the precedent set by Nod-Krai's Behind the Scenes video.
Etymology
- "Snezhnaya" (Russian: Снежная Snezhnaya, "Snowy") is a Russian adjective for "snowy," expecting a feminine noun to follow (most likely Страна Strana or Земля Zemlya — Russian words for "country" or "land" respectively, both of which are feminine and are permitted to be omitted for a synecdoche in such a context). The game's voiceover places the accent on the second syllable (Snezh-na-ya); however, in the original word, it's on the first (Snezh-na-ya).
- During the first Closed Beta Test, Snezhnaya was instead named "Prekrasnaya" (Прекрасная Prekrasnaya, "Beautiful").[9]
- Snezhnaya's Chinese name, 至冬 Zhìdōng, is an anagram of the Chinese term for winter solstice (冬至 Dōngzhì).
- "Zapolyarny" (Russian: Заполярный Zapolyarnyy, "Polar") roughly translates to "beyond the arctic circle" or "inside the polar region."
- "Morepesok" (Russian: Морепесок Morepesok, "Sea-Sand") is a compound of the words for море more, "sea" and песок pesok, "sand," itself referring to a beach or coastline as a sort of kenning.
- "Snezhnograd" (Russian: Снежноград Snezhnograd, "Snowy City") uses the Russian root -град -grad, "city," which was traditionally used when establishing cities in Russia.
- The name "Novokitezhgrad" (Russian: Новокитежград Novokitezhgrad, "New Kitezh City") contains the name Kitezh, a legendary city in central Russia that sank into a lake, similar to Atlantis in Greek mythology.
- "Tsaritsa" (Russian: Царица Tsaritsa, "Empress"), used to refer to their Archon, is the feminine form of Tsar, which ultimately derives from Caesar, a title of Roman emperors. So far, no one has called her by her true name; Snezhnayans call her by her title, while Venti and Zhongli call her "the Cryo Archon."
Cultural References
- Snezhnaya is primarily inspired by by a mix of Medieval, Tsarist and Soviet Russia (primarily Siberia in regards to landscape), and often uses Russian words for names. However, it also draws from other European nations as well, such as using Italian commedia dell'arte stock characters' names for the Harbingers.
- Snezhnaya's affiliation with brutal winters parallels Russia's climate, which has famously contributed to the failures of the many military campaigns made against it.
- Tartaglia addresses the Traveler as "comrade" in his voice-overs, the usual translation of "tovarishch" (Russian: товарищ tovarishch) used in Soviet/Bolshevik Russia.
- In the Japanese version of Childe's Character Miscellany, he starts off his letter ("Dearest sister...") in Russian.[10]
- Fire-Water (Russian: огненная вода ognennaya voda, "fiery water"), which Angel's Share bartender Charles deems the strongest wine he knows of, originates from Snezhnaya. It is a reference to the liquor vodka, a drink commonly associated with Russia. In real life, Russian Vodka is normally 45-55% Ethanol, and some Vodkas are more than 80% Ethanol, making Vodka one of the most alcoholic drinks in the world.
