Fietena

Fietena is a quest-exclusive NPC that appears in the Archon Quest Past and Future in Chapter V: Act II - Black Stone Under a White Stone.

Profile

Fietena was a member of the Collective of Plenty who later got married into the Flower-Feather Clan. She contributed to uniting and protecting the tribes of Natlan after their Pyro Archon had gone into the Sacred Flame and the council went on quarreling over control.^[1]

Fietena had followed Wanjiru when she was little, listening to the latter recounting heroic legends. She had never received an Ancient Name either, but together with other warriors of her generation such as Traore and Nzambe, she bravely safeguarded Natlan during the decade following their Pyro Archon's departure, until the calamity waned and the Abyssal contamination from battles took a heavy toll on her body as she aged. By then, she passed the torch to Taika, who was likewise a follower of her and would become the mightiest warrior of the Flower-Feather Clan, with the Demon-Warrior's Feather Mask given to him as her token.

She was a renowned wrestler, with stories circulating that she could send lightning bolts back into the sky and in the worst days of the war, she managed to fight off the enemy while eating moldy Tatacos and meat that was practically charcoal.^[2] According to Varesa, Fietena's most iconic feature was her masks, she used 5 different versions throughout her career.

My intuition told me to base it on the mask that Fietena wore on her second time fighting in the Night Warden Wars. She wasn't yet "The Fearless Rock" that she'd go on to become, but in that battle she still managed to conquer her fears and defeat all the monsters who confronted her. I believed that that mask could become an endless source of courage for me, and based on my experience since, I was right! The stories say that in the worst days of the war, she survived on moldy Tatacos and burned meat that was practically charcoal. And she still managed to fight off the enemy... I have no idea how she did it.

Trivia

• Varesa idolizes Fietena as a hero and as a wrestler. She calls upon "Lady Fietena" for courage, and has designed her own mask and fighting style to emulate the other's.
• Fietena changed her mask design at least 5 times in her lifetime, with Varesa modeled her own after one of them.

Etymology

• Fietena Afua is a fire deity in the Akan religion.
