Modeste

Modeste is a quest-exclusive NPC who appears in Escoffier's Story Quest, Dulciaria Structura Chapter: Act I - Treasured Above All.

Profile

Modeste is a renowned Fontainian chef in the past. He was friends with Savelli, and the two would frequently go on adventures to discover new culinary ingredients to add to their dishes. Eventually, they founded Hotel Debord, and coupled with the rare ingredients found in their adventures, became popular among Fontaine's upper class for their dishes.

Ten years after the hotel was founded, Modeste and Savelli explored ancient Remurian ruins and discovered a jar inside. When they tasted the contents, they were surprised to discover that it was incredibly sweet and Modeste used it to create the original Gateau Debord. The cake soon became famed among all of Fontaine due to its high quality and the rarity of the ingredient, with only sixteen orders being allowed a day. As Modeste continued baking the cakes, he soon discovered that the cakes were not being up to his standard, spending many nights figuring out what was wrong. Eventually, he realized that the jar's contents, when continually consumed, would diminish the user's taste buds. Out of despair of being unable to taste his own creations, Modeste wrote a letter to Savelli informing him of his discovery before committing suicide.

Upon reading the letter, Savelli, knowing that the hotel and Modeste's reputation would be ruined if the truth was released, went into the ruins, sealed it off, and left behind evidence incriminating him as Modeste's murderer. The ploy worked, and Modeste was considered a chef who passed before his prime. The Codex Debord, a famed cookbook owned by the restaurant, contained all of Modeste's original recipes and copies were made, given to the head chef of the hotel. Escoffier would be given the original copy instead.

Many years later, Modeste's descendant, Monica, was skeptical of Modeste's death and investigated on her own, discovering the truth behind the incident. However, she had no interest in her ancestor's legacy and simply sought to make a quick profit, but she was stopped by Savanna, Escoffier and the Traveler.
