Sybilla, also known as the Golden Bee, was an Angel who served as Celestia's divine envoy in Meropis during the era of the unified civilization.

Originally an envoy tasked with guarding the Irminsul tree in Meropis, Sybilla's form and mind were worn down until she remained in the form of a golden bee. Remus discovered her in this state after accidentally entering the city's ruins, and she departed with him to establish Remuria.^[2]

Profile

As a former envoy, Sybilla had prophetic powers which allowed her to foretell Remus and Remuria's future. Though she played a major role in building Remuria's prosperity and later sacrificed her life for the sake of creating Phobos, Remus' Grand Symphony,^[3] her lack of a will ultimately caused the project to fail in Remus' initial goal of freeing Remuria from its fate, as her vague desire to "grant happiness to all in the world who are called humans" caused Phobos to attempt to satisfy "everyone's" desires — including destructive and selfish ones — and set Remuria towards the course of its self-destruction.^[4]

However, Sybilla's long-planned rebellion against the Heavenly Principles did partially succeed in defying Fate. It is noted that, even after the Archon War, "the Remurians have somehow been able to elude the gaze of the high heavens and transmit their arts,"^[5] through secret orders such as the Golden Troupe and Marechaussee Hunters. The transmission of these arts ultimately led to several key events in Teyvat's history, such as the formation of the Narzissenkreuz Ordo and the restoration of Teyvat's native Moon Goddess (Columbina), in the Archon Quest True Moon, using the same Seal of Chymical Marriage once taught to humans by Sybilla.^[6]

Trivia

• Sybilla's character is likely loosely inspired by the Greek goddess Aphrodite, the mother of Phobos who, like Sybilla, was also associated with bees among other things. Remus could also be loosely based on the Greek god Ares, Aphrodite's lover and the father of Phobos; though the relationship between Remus and Sybilla as described thus far does not suggest anything romantic, making this less likely.
  • Sybilla's association with bees is perhaps also about the Greek nymph Melissa who gave the bees their names, the name "Melissa" (Ancient Greek: μέλισσα mélissa) itself can mean bee, honey or honeybee.

Etymology

• Sybil is the most popular spelling variant of Sibyl (Latin: Sibylla) since the 19th century. It was originated from Síbulla (Greek: Σίβυλλα "Divine Will").
