Archon War
Last updated 2026-09-09
The Archon War was an era of various power struggles between gods in Teyvat that lasted from 6,000–2,000 years ago.[1][2][Note 1] The Archon War was instigated by the Heavenly Principles, who used the conflict as a means to select the group of Seven Archons who would govern Teyvat on their behalf in the new era after the war of funerary flame. Seven divine thrones were established in Celestia holding Authority over each of the elements, along with seven corresponding Gnoses, which would be given to the gods emerging victorious from the conflict.
In the regions of Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma, and Sumeru, many gods fought against each other for the chance to attain one of the seven seats. Meanwhile, though no native gods were originally present in Fontaine, Natlan, or Snezhnaya, each of those regions still played host to conflicts between various factions and entities from which a unified nation under an Archon ultimately emerged. While different regions settled their power struggles at different times, the era drew to a close 2,000 years ago after the final seat was claimed. With the end of an era came the establishment of a new order under The Seven. They established the seven nations, determining their method of governance through their ideals and shaping their nations using their elemental powers.
Background
Following the war of funerary flame 6,000 years ago,[3] the Heavenly Principles had sustained wounds that compromised their ability to suppress the original order of Teyvat.[4] The unified civilization that had existed before the war was completely dismantled, and all history associated with it was banned from that point onwards,[5] with the Heavenly Principles deciding to establish a "new order" instead.[4] The Angels, who had previously served as their divine envoys to govern humanity, were cursed and expelled from Celestia as punishment for Koitar's role in leading the Hyperborean rebellion.[6][7] A new class of gods had begun to emerge following the conclusion of the war, and it was these gods that the Heavenly Principles had chosen to guide humanity—a task that had previously been entrusted to the Angels.[8]
Around this time, a Third Descender had arrived to Teyvat from the sea of stars,[9] Saarelainen.[10] In order to compensate for the wounds they had sustained, the Heavenly Principles killed Saarelainen and, together with "one who came after," created the seven Gnoses from their remains;[11] these Gnoses were to be used as instruments to aid the Heavenly Principles in maintaining their control over Teyvat and continute to suppress its original order.[12] They also set up seven divine thrones in Celestia,[13] each containing one of the stolen elemental Authorities of the Seven Sovereigns.[11] The gods were then driven to fight each other over possession of the seven divine thrones and their corresponding Gnoses.[4]
Mondstadt
2600 years ago, in the midst of the Archon War, the city of Mondstadt was located northwest of the current location, what is now known as Stormterror's Lair. Back then, there were two warring gods: Decarabian, the God of Storms, and Boreas, the King of the North Wind. The entity who would become Barbatos was but a wisp of the wind, with little to no power.[14]
At that time, Mondstadt was a wasteland of ice, snow, and endless icy blizzards, almost impossible for humans to live in.[15][16] This was all caused by Boreas, who gained his powers from Koitar.[17] In order to protect his people from the cold, Decarabian enclosed the city into a wall of storms, letting nothing go in or out of it; Boreas declared war on Decarabian, but was incapable of landing even a scratch on his tower. For his part, Decarabian seemed either uninterested in, or incapable of, defeating Boreas, and was content with keeping his people safe. Unbeknownst to Decarabian, however, his people felt trapped and worshipped him out of fear, which he mistook for genuine devotion.[Note 2] At some point, the Gunnhildr Clan abandoned its fortress at Windrest Peak and sought refuge from Boreas's blizzards within Decarabian's city.[16]
During his time as a wisp of the wind, Barbatos befriended a young bard who dreamt of freedom. He also saved the Gunnhildr Clan, who had left Decarabian's city to live in the frozen wasteland, and their resulting faith empowered him.[16] Eventually, Barbatos and the Nameless Bard, alongside Decarabian's disillusioned lover Amos, a red-haired warrior, and Gunnhildr, raised an army against the God of Storms.[18] They eventually emerged victorious, taking down the god and freeing the people from his stormy cage. Unfortunately, both Amos and the bard were among the casualties, causing deep regret for Barbatos.
After Decarabian's demise, Barbatos claimed a divine seat in Celestia, becoming the first — and only — Anemo Archon among The Seven. Boreas, despite holding tremendous power, was aware that he was ill-fit for the role of a loving archon who could nurture humanity, as he found human society to be a disappointment and only accepted abandoned infants and outcasts as his kin.[19][20] Believing himself unfit for the position of Anemo Archon, Boreas chose to disappear.[21] In his final days, he realized that his icy blizzards could only destroy life and decided to let his power flow into the land of Mondstadt instead, putting an end to the icy storm.[22] Boreas would eventually return as a spirit, watching over the area now known as Wolvendom and working with Barbatos as one of his Four Winds.
Barbatos' first use of his powers was to take the form of the young bard as a way to honor him.[23] After that, he used his wind powers to shape the land to make it prosperous for his people, teaching them the values of freedom.[24] He then left the people to themselves, refusing to rule them directly and risk becoming a tyrant himself.[25] Instead, he journeyed throughout Teyvat, often paying visits to the Geo Archon, Morax, of the neighboring nation of Liyue.[26][27]
Liyue
During the Archon War, Morax, Marchosius, and Guizhong, lived with the adepti and their people in the region now known as the Guili Plains. When the war began, they stood by each other and fought other gods. 3,700 years ago, Guizhong died in a particular battle which also ravaged the Guili Plains, and Morax took the people south of Mt. Tianheng and established Liyue Harbor.[28][29]
After the establishment of Liyue Harbor, Morax continued to defend his people from other gods and monsters. One of his exploits was the war with the unnamed mistress of Chenyu Vale. The war was implied to be particularly bloody, as the Bishui River was said to be crimson red. Morax easily overwhelmed the god, who then sought to flood the Bisuhi River in a final attempt to defeat him. This act would have also destroyed the vale, causing the god's adepti disciples, Fujin and the Herblord, to defect. The two rebelled against their mistress, along with their old friend, the suanni Lingyuan, to evacuate the people. In the end, the mistress was sealed away,[30] but the Herblord lost her human form and Fujin "sank to the sea," both of whom having lost tremendous Adepti powers in the process.[31]
Other notable feats of Morax were defeating and sealing various gods and sea monsters at Guyun Stone Forest with stone lances, such as Osial. Although they were defeated, the stone pillars became divine, but with hatred and curses within as well. Another god defeated by Morax was Chi, who seized control of the region that is now known as Mt. Qingce. In response, Morax confronted the beast at a "great height" and ultimately succeeded in slaying it. However, even after its death, Chi's power continued to seep into the land, and to suppress its lingering influence, Morax defeated and sealed each aspect of it. Among the gods who lost to Morax was the serpent god Orobashi, who fled to Inazuma after its defeat.[1]
Marchosius, the God of the Stove, was one of the gods who sacrificed his power and godly status to prevent the calamities and plagues caused by the war from finally destroying Liyue. The demons that were generated, however, posed a threat to the people, so Morax assigned a group of adepti called the Yaksha to eliminate them. The karmic debt accumulated proved to be too much for them, either perishing or disappearing; as of the present day, Xiao is the only alive and active yaksha.
Meanwhile, the Salt Goddess Havria, known for both her gentleness and relative weakness compared to other gods, tried to avoid the chaos of the Archon War and yearned for the peaceful days of old. However, in that brutal era, she found herself making more and more concessions until all she had left for her and her people was the land now known as Sal Terrae. In the end, she perished at the hands of her own people: realizing that her love and kindness were incapable of protecting them, the king of her people decided to slay her both as a demonstration of their decision to take a more militaristic stance,[32] and to spare her the agony of defeat and destruction at the hands of another god. On her death, however, the surge of power that emerged from her body turned anyone who had been in the area into salt. Those who survived were scattered throughout Liyue, most eventually settling in Liyue Harbor and forming Yinyuan Hall with a distorted version of events.[33]
Inazuma
Around 6,000 years ago, Ei and Makoto began their participation in the Archon War.[1][2][Note 1] Among the warring gods in Inazuma was Orobashi, who, realizing that he stood no chance of winning, chose to flee into Enkanomiya.[5][34] He was discovered by a child who begged him to become their god.[1] Accepting the role, Orobashi overthrew the Sunchildren's rule, and liberated the people of Enkanomiya.[35] He also defeated the Bathysmal Vishaps that lived there, which had terrorized the Enkanomiyans at that time.[36]
Makoto and Ei gradually conquered and unified the numerous youkai races that lived in Inazuma.[37] The youkai under her banner used their powers to help humans seek refuge in the mountains and also built Inazuma City on Narukami Island.[38]
Around 2,000 years ago,[34] Orobashi was sentenced to death by Celestia after reading Before Sun and Moon, which documented the history that predated the war of funerary flame, which Celestia had forbidden. He began preparing the people of Enkanomiya for their eventual return to the surface in accordance with a divine decree.[39] To ease their transition, he had his followers adopt the language and culture of Narukami Island.[40] Orobashi later created Watatsumi Island from the coral that grew from his body, enabling his people to once again live beneath the open sky as part of the Inazuman archipelago. During this time, Ei had defeated all the other gods in the region, and unified the archipelago under the Inazuma Shogunate.[37][41][34] Although Ei was the stronger of the two sisters, she believed Makoto was better suited to rule as Archon, and so sacrificed her physical form to allow the latter to ascend to Celestia. After becoming Electro Archon, Makoto used her power to revive and restore Ei's body by recalling her divine will, after which Ei served as her kagemusha, or body double, leading most people to believe that only a single Electro Archon had ever existed.[42][43] For many years thereafter, the Inazuma Shogunate and Watatsumi Island coexisted peacefully, each of them respecting the border between their territories.[41]
After years of famine, Orobashi's people urged him to invade the fertile lands of Yashiori Island. Although he initially refused out of fear of Narukami's power, he eventually relented in response to their suffering, viewing the conflict as a means of fulfilling his sentence.[41][34] Leading the forces of Watatsumi alongside Akuou and the twin generals Mouun and Ayame, Orobashi launched an invasion of Yashiori Island and seized the ancient city of Mumei, appointing Akuou as its vassal ruler.[34][44] War soon erupted between Watatsumi and the Shogunate, with Ei personally leading the latter's forces into battle.[45] Akuou fought and slew the Sasayuri,[46] one of Ei's closest friends, prompting her to unleash the Musou no Hitotachi in retaliation. With a single strike, she killed both Orobashi and Akuou while splitting Yashiori Island in two.[47][48][49] The war was so devastating and blood-soaked that Mumei was destroyed in battle,[50][51] and the sea turned crimson with blood.[44] Mouun and the mighty whale Daikengyou attempted to withdraw from the battlefield but were ambushed and slain by the tengu under Sasayuri’s command, while Ayame met her end and disappeared beneath the sea of blood.[44]
From Orobashi's resentment arose the Tatarigami, leading Ei to erect wards known as the Narukami Pillars to seal his his soul and suppress his hatred. In the aftermath, Higi Village was established, and the Yashiori Guardians, led by the Kitain Clan, assumed responsibility for containing the Tatarigami.[51][52][53] Following the Shogunate's victory, Watatsumi Island came under the authority of the Electro Archon, though Ei permitted its people to continue worshiping Orobashi.[41][54]
Sumeru
Unlike other nations, the three God-Kings: King Deshret, Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, and Nabu Malikata peacefully shared the throne with each other while governing Ay-Khanoum together.[55] Throughout this era, Deshret defeated many gods, including Heryshaf, Sobek, and Thoth, who ultimately submitted to his authority and entered his service as members of the Seven Pillars.[56][57][58] Others, however, refused to serve under him, such as Remus, who chose to leave Sumeru and embark upon a life of wandering.[59]
Deshret even rejected a "gift" given to him by Celestia (implied to be a Gnosis, and by extension the position of Archon) to pursue his own interests and ambitions.[60] He shared with Nabu Malikata his desire to rebel against Celestia, and she agreed to aid him by revealing a path toward Forbidden Knowledge. Rukkhadevata, however, refused to support their ambitions and departed from the desert, establishing her own civilization. In the end, Nabu Malikata sacrificed herself in a ritual intended to guide Deshret toward the forbidden knowledge he sought, unleashing devastating sandstorms that ravaged the kingdom they had built together. Unaware of the true circumstances of her death, Deshret mourned her deeply and set out in search of the Celestial Nail buried within the desert sands. Upon finding it, he used its power, together with the aid of the Jinni, to create the Eternal Oasis as a resting place and memorial to Nabu Malikata.
After parting ways with Deshret and Nabu Malikata, Rukkhadevata journeyed east of the Great Red Sand and created the Varuna Contraption, transforming part of the desert into a lush rainforest. To protect the newly created forest from desertification, she erected the Wall of Samiel along the border between the rainforest and the desert. The city of Sumeru was built upon the Divine Tree, while the sages of the Sumeru Akademiya assisted Rukkhadevata in governing the affairs of the nation.
Deshret continued to rule over the desert until he ultimately succumbed to the corruption of forbidden knowledge, resulting in the appearance of Eleazar and the Withering throughout Sumeru. Seeking aid, he turned to Rukkhadevata, who briefly returned to the desert, gathered the priests, instructed them to construct temples, and established Aaru Village as the final refuge of his civilization. To halt the spread of the corruption, she created the Akasha System, uniting the wisdom of the people and expending a vast portion of her power to suppress the forbidden knowledge, a sacrifice that caused her to regress into a childlike form. Yet even these efforts proved insufficient to eradicate the corruption completely, and in the end, Deshret sacrificed himself to bring the disaster to an end and save what remained of his people. Following Deshret's death, Rukkhadevata presumably ascended as the Dendro Archon.
Somewhere in Sumeru during the war, a fungi god named Bifrons grew "clones" of itself in order to feed the people, who were starving from the war. Bifrons gained a small cult following, planning to create an empire in which it would be powerful, but its powers were not strong enough and it was in danger of dying due to a lack of clones to propagate. Taking possession of a human named Chatraka, Bifrons ordered him to find him a suitable hot place to grow. Chatraka took it to the Great Volcano of Tollan in Natlan, and as he attempted to plant it, an eruption occurred and buried both. Over the years, Bifrons would slowly restore its power, hoping to take revenge against Sumeru when it was fully restored.[61]
Fontaine
After being defeated by King Deshret, Remus arrived in the High Sea seeking a place to die.[59] There, he discovered the ruins of Meropis and met Sybilla, an angel tasked with safeguarding an Irminsul tree. She foretold that he was destined to come there and found a magnificent civilization. Accepting his fate, the Irminsul tree transformed into a golden ship, which he used to establish the empire of Remuria over the waters. Under Remus's rule, Remuria entered a golden age. Seeking to create a harmonious and enlightened civilization, he expanded his empire through both diplomacy and conquest, bringing numerous tribes under his banner while subjugating those who refused to join him, such as the tribe which Erinnyes and Cassiodor hailed from. Cassiodor later encountered the Harmost Boethius and entered Remuria's service, while Erinnyes, who had hidden among the bones of the dead, was taken in by the chief of the northern border tribe of Aremorica and entrusted with safeguarding the region's remaining free waters from the Remus' influence.
At some point thereafter, Erinnyes became the Great Queen of Aremorica, and proclaimed herself an oracle capable of hearing the voice of Egeria and began uniting Fontaine's scattered warrior tribes under a single banner. She compelled them to swear loyalty to Egeria and acknowledge that the gods they once worshipped were merely aspects of her. Leading her armies against Remuria, she and her followers swore never to draw their swords against those devoted to Egeria, never to compromise with evil, and to protect the Oceanids. These warriors would later become known as the Knights of the Lake.
Sometime later, Remus dispatched Cassiodor to Aremorica. Disguised as a wandering traveler, he entered a martial tournament and emerged victorious, earning an audience with Erinnyes in an attempt to persuade her to end the conflict with Remuria. However, his true identity was uncovered, and his artificial body was shattered. As his consciousness prepared to return to Remuria, Erinnyes cradled him and vowed that she would one day free him from the golem body that housed his soul, assuring him that she had not forgotten their promise. At some point thereafter, she led an assault on Cassiodor's palace in Petrocorii, now known as Petrichor, though despite her efforts, the conflict between Aremorica and Remuria continued until the empire's eventual collapse.
As Remuria prospered, Remus became increasingly concerned by Sybilla's prophecy and sought a way to avert the destruction foretold for his nation. At her suggestion, he journeyed into the depths of the Primordial Sea in search of Egeria to find a possible solution. There, he was challenged by the dragon Scylla, who is guarding Egeria's prison, and the two fought for thirty days and thirty nights before Remus was finally granted passage. His meeting with Egeria, however, brought little comfort, as she revealed that Fontaine's fate had already been sealed by her "original sin" of creating a new race of humans using the Primordial Sea's power. Nevertheless, she entrusted him with a cup of Primordial Water, while Scylla, intrigued by his ideals, decides to leave the Primordial Sea to join his cause.
Hoping to save his people from the prophesied flood, he combined Primordial Water with an immortal stone to create the Golden Ichor, a substance capable of preserving the souls and minds of his people within artificial bodies. He later sacrificed Sybilla to create the Grand Symphony (Phobos), it inherited her lack of personal will and existed solely to fulfill humanity's desires. Witnessing the moral decay of his civilization, Remus secretly conspired with Scylla to destroy Phobos and bring an end to the corruption consuming his empire. As part of their plan, Scylla led an army of vishaps against the Capitolium. During the ensuing conflict, Remus unleashed the power of the Symphony and perished. In the aftermath, the Harmost Boethius seeing his retreat as a betrayal, seized the Golden Ichor, and used it together with chains forged by Euergetia to seal the dragon. Shortly thereafter, a massive tsunami triggered by the Grand Symphony's self-destruct order swept away Remuria and its people, causing the empire to sink into the Sea of Bygone Eras.[62] The Golden Ichor was gradually corroded by the Primordial Sea, and the survivors eventually fell back into barbarism.
Following the fall of Remuria, Celestia ordered Egeria to return from her imprisonment and succeed Remus as Fontaine's ruler. Gathering the survivors, she mediated their disputes and instructed them to establish new settlements around Fontaine's springs, laying the foundations of a new civilization governed by law. She was subsequently granted a Gnosis and ascended as the Hydro Archon.[63] Erinnyes finally met the goddess she had served for so long and begged her to reveal how the people of Fontaine could escape the fate she had struggled to prevent. Moved by her devotion, Egeria revealed the truth: Fontaine's original sin stemmed from her own act of creating humans from Oceanids, the ancestors of Erinnyes and countless others. The revelation shattered Erinnyes's faith, causing her to cast aside her sword and wander away from the valley, never to be seen again.
Natlan
Natlan was never part of the Archon War, since in-fighting between the dragons took over everything, and there was no room for the gods to join in.[64] One of these fights was the battle between Xbalanque and the Pyro Sovereign Xiuhcoatl, with Xbalanque emerging victorious. After becoming the first Pyro Archon,[65][66] Xbalanque founded the unique rules and system of Natlan, borrowing the power of Death from Ronova after his ascension to the divine throne.[66]
Snezhnaya
Various Fae clans ruled small principalities in what would come to be known as Snezhnaya.
During this time, the future Cryo Archon, Monomakh Snezhnyi, wandered the land, becoming "aspect of a young hero, unequalled in valor". He defeated and/or befriended various fae princes, such as Filipov and Vaselisa Strivozha.[67]
76 years after the city of Kitezh was founded by Monomakh, the Pale Star Court dispatched envoys to the Vila fiefs, and convinced them to stop paying tribute to Miscislav. Three years after that, Miscislav demanded that the Pale Star pay ten years of tribute, "the grain of six hundred granaries and gold to fill thirty storehouses, and sufficient slaves to transport such bounty"-- thirty times the amount which had been demanded of the Vila. Monomakh rejected this ultimatum.[67]
Sometime around here, Grand Duke Alvis set poured wine into the waters and set the water on fire, defeating the Water Imps.
In the next year, after learning of Vaselisa Vodyanovna's defection from the Volkodlak coalition (and after Filipov convinced Vaselisa Strivozha to do the same with her Vila fae), Miscislav and various clans of Volkodlak fae marched on Kitezh, and was summarily slain alongside the Grand Dukes Skoldyryt and Vodyanoy (whos's bodies were returned to their clans). The outcome of this battle caused the various fae clans to seek audience with (and swear allegiance to) Monomakh, who then declared himself the Belyi Tsar.[67]
There are rumors that Miscislav, in his desperation, used the Shadow Realm in this final battle, thus inspiring the Belyi Tsar to do the same; however, the Belyi Tsar was in truth making forays into the Shadow Realm long before this time.[68][67]
Conclusion
As the Archon War drew to a close 2,000 years ago,[69] only the Seven remained, giving Teyvat the seven nations we know today. Most defeated gods fled Teyvat and took refuge in the Dark Sea — lands outside of Teyvat where The Seven have no dominion, where they became known as "evil gods." Some gods, however, chose to cooperate with The Seven and even became important figures, such as Boreas and Marchosius.
Only Barbatos and Morax remain as the original victors of the Archon War, while the other five nations' Archons have been replaced over the past 2,000 years:
- Baal died 500 years ago in the cataclysm and was been replaced by her twin sister, named Beelzebul, who took the name "Baal".
- Similarly, Greater Lord Rukkhadevata also died 500 years ago in the cataclysm and has been replaced by her incarnation in the next samsara, Buer.
- The previous Hydro Archon - Egeria - perished during the cataclysm, and her remains became the Amrita Pool while her consciousness was anchored to the Human Realm by the Harvisptokhm (grown by Greater Lord Rukkhadevata) to contain and cleanse the abyssal defilement in the Girdle of the Sands, she was later succeeded by one of her familiars Focalors as the new Hydro Archon.
- Unlike other Archons, Xbalanque and his successors retained human lifespans after their ascension, with the title of Pyro Archon being passed down to many humans over the years. The last of these was Mavuika, who was able to enjoy a longer lifespan after putting her life into the Sacred Flame.
- The Belyi Tsar also died 500 years ago in the cataclysm and was been replaced by the Tsaritsa, who, for reasons still unknown, carried forward the Tsar's plan to overthrow the Heavenly Principles.
After Nahida purged Rukkhadevata from the Irminsul, the world's perception was changed and Nahida was now known as the only Dendro Archon since the Archon War. Zhongli's altered Character Story 5 now indicated that he and Barbatos were the only two of the first Seven to remain in positions of rulership. This supposes that Buer lost the ruler position due to her amnesia after exhausting her power during the cataclysm, and only regained her position recently. Thus, she is not viewed the same as Zhongli and Venti.
Notes
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 Aberaku is stated to have been alive during the era of the unified civilization and was later imprisoned by the first Sunchild, Rikoru. Seven Sunchildren existed in total, all of whom died as children, which places the maximum possible length of their total regime at around a century before it was overthrown by Orobashi, who had fled the Archon War. This places the start of the Archon War at most around a century or two after the conclusion of the war of funerary flame 6,000 years ago.
- ↑ While the idea that Decarabian trapped his people within the city is often stated in Mondstadt's history books, this is contradicted by Biography of Gunnhildr, which claims that the Gunnhildr Clan took refuge in the city, then left after growing disillusioned by Decarabian's rule. It is possible that the people's dissatisfaction with his rule originated from his apparent inaction against Boreas, who turned the rest of Mondstadt into a frozen tundra. Over time this discontentment morphed into the belief that Decarabian was a tyrant who locked them within his city without cause.
