Veronique

Last updated 2026-08-28

Veronique is an event-exclusive NPC who appeared in the Event Roses and Muskets and Sunny Summer Fontinalia.

Profile

Veronique is Baptiste's younger[Note 1] twin sister. Their biological parents are Morris and Elisa, a maid that worked for Morris's wealthy family. Veronique was presumably adopted, though seemingly into a different family from her brother.[Note 2]

After Elisa became pregnant, Morris, who feared the backlash should their relationship become known, sent Elisa away. Elisa still believed he loved her and carried the pregnancy to term, later sending Morris photos of their children. At that time, Morris had become engaged to another wealthy woman and, fearful of what would happen, hired an assassin from Fleuve Cendre to kill them. Elisa hid her two children under the floor of their home and confronted the assassin, dying in the process.

Baptiste and Veronique, fearing for their lives, did not emerge until a day had passed, after which they entered an orphanage. They were aware of their mother's murderer and sought revenge, but due to Morris' connections, were unable to reach him. By the events of the Fontinalia Festival, Veronique applied to Xavier's crew, who were going to create a film adaptation of Baptiste's book, "The Two Musketeers". She was given the role of prop manager, which she would use to buy parts for an actual working musket. She practiced and refined her skills in the Fleuve Cendre, before she killed the assassin that had killed their mother, leaving behind a Rainbow Rose from Baptiste's home on his body.

The Maison Gardiennage began to investigate the murder, with Chevreuse deducing that the siblings were responsible due to her friend Emilie recognizing the particular strain only growing in one location. Baptiste covers for her, claiming to be the killer, but this only gives Chevreuse more doubt when he is unable to reassemble the murder weapon. He would inform her that he had placed trust in that she would kill Morris for them. Once Chevreuse managed to corner Morris and make him confess to the murder, she did not do so, prompting Veronique to appear and shoot him, only for her shot to be blocked by Chevreuse's musket. Veronique was in anguish over the fact that she did not kill him, but Chevreuse claims that justice had to be enacted properly. As she is taken away alongside Morris to the Fortress of Meropide, she tells her that she was not convinced with her judgement and that justice was not served that day.

Chevreuse, understanding the siblings' anguish, decides to give Wriothesley a "heads-up" on their arrival. When he does not confirm nor deny her "heads-up", she suggests that he give everyone in the prison a copy of The Steambird once the murder case is published, which would make her and her brother seen as heroes and Morris as the villain, to ensure that Morris would not live a comfortable life in prison as the two had feared.

During the Sunny Summer Fontinalia event, Veronique and Baptiste are still serving their time in the Fortress of Meropide. They both came to the festival accompanied with Wriothesley and Sigewinne after Wriothesley managed to get authorization for them to visit. Veronique asked Xavier if she could join Musketeer Pictures' group photo, he agreed and added that he would have wanted her in last one too if circumstances had allowed it.

Notes

  1. In the Chinese version, Veronique refers to Baptiste as 哥哥 "older brother."
  2. The following two lines from Fiction and Reality Inside and Outside the Frame and Where the Roses Bloom, respectively, suggest that Chevreuse did not discover Veronique during her initial investigation of Baptiste, which would mean that Veronique was not adopted by Baptiste's adoptive parents:

Chevreuse: He has a family of his own and both of his parents are still alive. I've looked into his records... He was adopted at the age of six, and all the proper procedures were followed. There are also records of him at an orphange [sic] before then.

Chevreuse: With that hypothesis in mind, I went back to check Baptiste's orphanage adoption records. Guess whose name I saw on the same page, just a few lines from his?

As Baptiste and Veronique had already resolved to get their revenge before entering the orphanage and did not report that their mother was murdered, it is possible that they intentionally split themselves up to lower their risk of detection.
