- The "pleasure principle" (German: Lustprinzip) is a psychoanalytic concept introduced by Sigmund Freud. It refers to the instinctive seeking of pleasure and avoidance of pain to satisfy biological and psychological needs, as opposed to the "reality principle" (German: Realitätsprinzip).
