The "reality principle" (German: Realitätsprinzip) is a psychoanalytic concept introduced by Sigmund Freud. It refers to the ability of the mind to assess the reality of the external world, and to act upon it accordingly, as opposed to the "pleasure principle" (German: Lustprinzip).
