- The mirror stage (French: stade du miroir) is a psychoanalytic concept introduced by Jacques Lacan. It refers to the stage of development when an infant gains the ability to recognize their reflection in a mirror. It may also refer to any method that induces an infant to recognize their own form outside themselves.
