Etymology
- Balkonov and Yadova are a reference to and parody of Romeo and Juliet:
- Balkonov (Russian: балконов balkonov) is the genitive plural of balkon (Russian: балкон balkon), which means "balcony" in Russian.
- Romeo and Juliet Act 2, Scene 2, in which Romeo professes his love to Juliet, is famously known as the "balcony scene." Balkonov and Yadova's first three lines are parodying one of Romeo and Juliet's exchanges from this scene.[1]
- Yadova (Russian: Ядова Yadova) is derived from the Russian word for "poison," яд yad. In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet uses a drug to fake her death; Romeo, unaware of her and the friar's plan, fatally poisons himself to be with her in death. Upon awakening, Juliet uses Romeo's dagger to stab herself in the heart. Balkonov and Yadova's sixth, seventh, and eighth lines are in reference to this.
