Gosoythoth

Gosoythoth, also known as the Reaper of the Abyss,^[1] was a powerful entity described as the heart of the Abyss.^[2] It was a quest-exclusive NPC who first appeared in the Archon Quest The Surging Darkness in Chapter V: Act IV - The Rainbow Destined to Burn when the Abyss managed to snuff out the Sacred Flame.^[3]

Profile

Gosoythoth is an entity of ineffable form, manifested from the immense power of the Abyss after the Sacred Flame was extinguished. Its presence alone painted the sky black and brought forth endless calamity to all of Natlan.

It is capable of raining down Abyss Tumors that spawn Abyssal Pylons, summoning countless Abyssal monsters in its wake. It also has the same mimicry abilities as the Tenebrous Mimiflora and Tenebrous Papilla, being able to assume an alternate form in which it imitates an enemy. Using this ability, Gosoythoth was able to assume the form of Xiuhcoatl, one of the Seven Sovereigns.

Unlike its minions, Gosoythoth is a sapient being capable of complex thought. It is able to figure out Mavuika's plan and thus directly responds by launching a full invasion of Natlan in order to snuff them out before they awaken the last hero.^[4] It also displays signs of confidence, arrogance, and fear, while refering to itself as an individual.^[5]

Appearance

During the Abyssal invasion of Natlan, Gosoythoth initially takes the form of a massive, dark rift in the sky. This appearance consists of numerous dark purple cubes forming a spiral, a green black hole or eclipse-like light resembling an eye in the center, and a galaxy-like aura surrounding the form. It is also capable of briefly shrinking and taking the form of a dark purple orb, bearing identical star and spherical patterns seen on its cubes.

While taking the form of Xiuhcoatl as the Lord of Eroded Primal Fire, Gosoythoth appears as a giant, Abyss-corroded dragon, with design aspects similar to the Tenebrous Mimiflora. It consists of a large reptilian or serpent-like body, giant wings, various jagged and feather-like attachments, and a pair of arms dual-wielding massive swords composed of Pyro and Abyssal energy.

Story

After the Sacred Flame was extinguished, the Abyss launched an all-out invasion upon Natlan, manifesting its heart atop the Stadium of the Sacred Flame. As Mavuika activated the might of the Gnosis to reignite the Sacred Flame and temporarily restrained the Abyssal incursion, it escaped into the sky, looming over Natlan and staining the earth and sky black.^[3]

As the Abyssal corrosion intensified, Gosoythoth began raining down Abyss Tumors all over the region, spawning Abyssal Pylons that summoned Abyssal monsters to corrode the land even further.

After the six heroes gathered, Mavuika awakened the power of the Divine Throne and declared the Night War, during which all the warriors of Natlan would keep resurrecting, effectively wiping out the Abyss's forces. Mavuika then gathered all her strength and launched a devastating light of flames that pierces through Gosoythoth and the sky itself, ending its invasion of Natlan and sending it retreating back into the Abyss.^[6]

Upon returning to the Night Kingdom, Mavuika and the Traveler split up to weaken Gosoythoth; the former would destroy a core similar to that of the tumors, while the latter ventured into its lair. By the time the Traveler arrived, Gosoythoth was engaged in battle with Mavuika. Sensing the Traveler's presence, Gosoythoth attempted to prevent them from joining in but failed. In response, it extracted the memories of the fallen Pyro Dragon Xiuhcoatl from the Ley Lines and took his form, transforming into the Lord of Eroded Primal Fire.^[7] Gosoythoth also spoke in twisted voices of previous Pyro Archons, attempting to sow despair amongst its foes. However, the Traveler was able to withstand its attacks and Mavuika exposed that Gosoythoth was actually scared, knowing that its victory was no longer guaranteed. The two defeated Gosoythoth, purging the Night Kingdom of Abyssal influence for the time being.^[5]

Gosoythoth's death was also, somehow, able to cause the Abyss in Gurabad to subside.^[8]

Trivia

• Gosoythoth seemed to be aware of the mechanics and limitations of the Heavenly Principles' fate system, being confident in Natlan's pre-ordained destruction and later terrified by the presence of a Descender's ability to disrupt this fate, while also stating that the death of one would lead to Teyvat's doom.^[5]

Etymology

• Gosoythoth is an anagram of Yog-Sothoth, a fictional cosmic entity and Outer God created by H.P. Lovecraft, an author of the well-known Cthulhu Mythos.
