Abyss

OverviewEnemy Family

The Abyss, also known as the Void Realm, is a dark destructive force that originates from the sea of stars. It was introduced into Teyvat by Nibelung during the war of funerary flame. The Abyss has a great adaptive capability, and commonly manifests in the form of Abyssal monsters or as corruptive energy.

Overview

According to Barbeloth, the true essence of the Abyss lies in the hatred carried by all the alternate possibilities of fate that never came to pass; this resentment drives the Abyss to seek the destruction of all existence.[1] Consequently, it is obsessed with entering Teyvat at any cost.[1] The power of the Abyss also exists on other worlds within the Sea of stars.[2]

This "unworldly" power is diametrically opposed to the power of the Light Realm and can corrupt entities from the Human Realm, which are under Celestia's dominion. The Void Realm's dark currents are analogous to the Human Realm's Ley Lines and the Light Realm's elemental currents. Its darkness is extremely harmful towards elemental beings such as Vishaps and elemental dragons, although they are capable of repelling the darkness by harnessing the Light Realm's power.[3] The Shadow Realm created by Anacharsis using technology from beyond Teyvat is also noted to have a strong repellant relationship with the Abyss, and may in some way be related to "that very first shadow" cast by the Light Realm, as both "teem with possibilities." For the last 6,000 years of Teyvat's history, the Shadow Realm has acted as a "film" protecting Teyvat from the Abyss.[4]

According to the Belyi Tsar, the narrowing of the "boundless array of possibilities" contained in the Light Realm by the Heavenly Principles in the process of creating the Human Realm caused the Abyss to "naturally anchor into [Teyvat] at the end of time." Similarly to Rene de Petrichor, the Tsar and Rotwang predict the destruction of the planet by the Abyss as an inevitability only a few centuries after the Cataclysm.[4]

The Abyss' darkness is described as the only kind of power that could dye Morax's stone pillars black.[5] Venti, another Archon, was poisoned by Durin's Abyss-laced blood when his attempt to connect with Dvalin was interrupted by the Traveler; only by visiting the Symbol of Mondstadt's Hero at Windrise could Venti expunge the Abyssal poison from himself.[6] The rest of Durin's blood was spilt in Dragonspine, where it crystallized into Crimson Agate, a substance capable of reviving the Frostbearing Tree, which died thousands of years ago after the Skyfrost Nail dropped from Celestia. Previous attempts to revive the tree failed, indicating that Durin's blood had special properties.[7]

Prolonged exposure to the Abyss can drastically change a person's personality or corrupt their entire being.[8][9][10] Humans exposed to Abyssal energy will slowly begin to decay over time; even with treatment, large amounts of Abyssal energy will result in death. The Traveler, who is immune to the negative effects of the Abyss, has the ability to purify Abyssal energy to some degree.[11][12][13]

The Abyss appears to be attracted to — and draws in — those with great ambition, such as Rhinedottir and Tartaglia. Those who have personal ties to the Abyss have been known to gain an uncanny ability to wreak havoc and conflict.[14][15] Tsumi believes that the Abyss Order finds the Void Realm's power addictive.[3]

The Abyss appears to have a mind of its own, to the point that it could be considered an entity; the Kitsune Saiguu refers to it as such,[16] and during the cataclysm and events of Natlan's Archon Quests, the Abyss tailored its strategies to each of the six tribes and increased the frequency of its attacks as Mavuika's plan progressed.[17] The Abyss also speaks to Bennett directly and addresses itself in the first person.[18]

Denizens of the Abyss appear to use an Enochian-based language, based on the text that can be seen above Abyss Mages' heads when talking to Hilichurls and in their Adventurer Handbook description. Abyss monsters also have the ability to manipulate elemental energy without the use of Visions. A few individuals, such as Skirk and Surtalogi, use the Khaenri'ahn "Seven-Shifting Serpent" technique (originally known as "Chaos Permeation") in order to conceal their usage of Abyssal power by having it mimic elemental energy.[19]

Time in the Abyss passes differently than it does in Teyvat; Tartaglia spent three months in there, but returned to a Teyvat that had only seen three days pass since his disappearance.[14] When Takamine the Mistsplitter finally emerged from the Abyss, a long time had passed on Teyvat and Asase Hibiki was "no longer young."[20] It is unclear whether this time scale disparity is consistent or if it can change depending on certain factors. However, Skirk does not contradict Paimon when the latter asks whether one day in the Abyss is equivalent to one month in Teyvat, suggesting that this is the norm.[21]

Notable Entities

There are 5 characters who are from or affiliated with the Abyss:

Abyss Order

The Abyss Order is an organization comprised mostly of non-human beings that harness both the elements and Abyssal power, seeking to ruin Teyvat as retaliation for the cataclysm 500 years ago. Its members are former citizens of Khaenri'ah who were transformed into monsters through a yet unclear process, speculated to be the divine punishment of the Heavenly Principles and other gods of Celestia, such as Asmoday. After being separated by Asmoday, the Traveler's Sibling has also become the leader of the Abyss Order. The Abyss Order usually conscripts Hilichurls and Abyss Mages to do their work.

The Wild Hunt

The Wild Hunt is a mindless horde found across Nod-Krai, which was one of the first places to have been afflicted by the Abyss during the cataclysm. They consist of humans who were corrupted by the Abyss and now serve Rerir. They are lead by Rerir, and they are searching for fragments of the Three Moons.

Other Entities

The following entities have been affiliated with the Abyss, although they have not necessarily been linked to the Abyss Order:

  • The "beast of sin" which corrupted Chiyo.[8]
  • The Five Sinners of Khaenri'ah, among each stole the all-encompassing power of the Abyss and divided amongst themselves.[22]
    • Rhinedottir, "Gold", who created all sorts of living beings affiliated with the Abyss, including Riftwolves and Durin.
    • Surtalogi, "The Foul", who taught Skirk how to wield the powers of the Abyss.
    • Vedrfolnir, "The Visionary", who inspired Chlothar to form the Abyss Order.
    • Rerir, "Rächer of Solnari", who leads the Wild Hunt in Nod Krai.

Story

Ancient History

The Abyss has existed in the sea of stars since long before the earliest known history of Teyvat. At an unknown point in time, it destroyed the alien civilization of Throgg.

When Anacharsis visited Teyvat to speak with Dragon King Nibelung, she informed him that the planet would one day be destroyed by the Abyss.[23] In response, Nibelung encouraged his dragon civilization to develop advanced technology that would give them the spacefaring capability to travel beyond the confines of Teyvat.[24] Nibelung eventually left Teyvat to search for a solution to the threat of the Abyss within the sea of stars,[25][26] but was himself corrupted by the Abyss instead.[27] After the Heavenly Principles took over Teyvat, they too had a great fear of the Abyss—therefore,[26] they decided to shroud the planet under a false sky as a means of preventing any outside infiltration.[25] When Nibelung eventually returned to Teyvat, he attempted to fight the Heavenly Principles to wrest back control over the planet in a conflict that became known as the war of funerary flame; however, his returned caused the power of the Abyss to be introduced into the world, leading to widespread Abyssal corruption.[28][29][30] It was at this time that the region of Enkanomiya fell into the ocean depths, where its stranded residents came to develop their understanding of the Void and Light Realms as well as the Human Realm created by the the Heavenly Principles. The people of Enkanomiya built the Towers of the Three Realms to regulate the powers of the Human Realm, Light Realm, and Void Realm. These towers, known as Kunado's Locus, Yachimatahiko's Locus, and Yachimatahime's Locus, were hidden using techniques only known by shrine maidens and the Vassals of Watatsumi.[31][32]

After defeating Nibelung, the Heavenly Principles launched numerous Celestial Nails on the surface of the planet in an attempt to purify the Abyssal corruption, though large holdovers of Abyssal presence has remained in the world to the present day.[33]

The Cataclysm

At some point, five prominent individuals from Khaenri'ah; Surtalogi, Rhinedottir, Vedrfolnir, Hroptatyr and Rerir became tempted by the call of the Abyss and discovered a massive source of power from it that could destroy Teyvat. They shared it among themselves, becoming the Five Sinners of Khaenri'ah, but also transcendent beings with "world-shattering" power.[34]

Five hundred years ago, during the cataclysm, the fall of Khaenri'ah's Eclipse Dynasty came at the hands of the gods. The "great sinner" Rhinedottir, also known as Gold, created an enormous amount of monsters containing Abyssal power. These monsters proceeded to ravage Teyvat, causing widespread destruction.[15][35] It is unclear whether the gods' attack on Khaenri'ah came before or after her actions, but the two events are inextricably linked. Following the destruction of Khaenri'ah, the pure-blooded inhabitants, seen as greater "sinners", were cursed with immortality, whereas the non-pure, or lesser "sinners", who came from mixed blood were instead cursed to become various monsters such as hilichurls, Abyss Mages, Abyss Heralds or Abyss Lectors.[36]

Surtalogi, who sought a worthy opponent to battle, was informed by Vedrfolnir about bringing a disciple to Teyvat. He traveled across the stars to look for the ideal disciple, eventually doing so when he found Skirk. Skirk's people lived in the Abyss and were able to co-exist with it, though they only had simple lives and thought little of the matter. Her people were eventually wiped out when a merchant ship came from the stars and deemed its people a threat, but she herself survived because she was curious about the outside world and was not in the village when it was razed. Skirk would train with Surtalogi in the Abyss and eventually made a "home" for herself in the Abyss.

When the great beast Elynas arrived in Fontaine, many Abyssal sea creatures also emerged with it; Elynas' presence caused severe pollution to the nation's land and water. The Fontaine Armada was recalled to tackle the beast, during which they pursued Elynas over the course of 35 days while attracting all types of Abyssal creatures in the process. Elynas had begun to bleed from unknown wounds and eventually died; through his remains and the power of the Abyss, the Breacher Primus species who still roam the remains of Elynas were created.

In Natlan, the Abyss caused more damage during the cataclysm due to the nation's lack of stable, deep-rooted Ley Lines, seemingly adjusting their attacks to each tribe. Eventually they were temporarily repelled by the Pyro Archon Mavuika and several ancient heroes of the time; Tenoch, Sundjatta, Sanhaj, Burkina, Tupac, Wanjiru and Menilek. Knowing the Abyss would return into the future, Mavuika drafted a plan that would require the Ancient Name bearers to pass their names down in the future while the tribes rebuilt, and the Wayob would send their hero when the time came to indicate that the tribe was ready to fight. However, the Abyss became aware of the plan and infiltrated the Night Kingdom, slowly infecting it and the Wayob within them to prevent it from being passed down. This worked to some degree, as only three of the tribes were ready by the time she awoke 500 years later.

The Abyss would overrun Ochkanatlan, causing the ancient city to be sealed off by the Flower-Feather Clan. Those who snuck around the patrols to investigate the city perished to the monsters within.

Meanwhile, to keep the Abyss at bay, the Pilgrimage of the Return of the Sacred Flame and Night Warden Wars were conducted to produce Contending Fire, a source of energy to fuel the Sacred Flame. The Sacred Flame would keep a majority of the Abyss at bay as long as it was not extinguished. During the Night Warden Wars, which sent Ancient Name bearers into the Night Kingdom to fight the Abyss, the Abyss would occasionally win the battle by adapting and adjusting tactics.

Thousands of years ago, at some unspecified point in time after its shattering after the war of funerary flame, the remains of the Goddess of the Iridescent Moon sank beyond Teyvat into a Abyssal domain within Khaenri'ah,[37] where the fading soul of its Goddess fused with the powers of Abyss in a desperate attempt to prolong her lifespan and transformed into the baleful Crimson Moon.[38] The Crimson Moon Dynasty of Khaenri'ah was founded around the veneration of the Crimson Moon, who used it as their conduit to the Abyss. The power of the Crimson Moon manifested as the Balemoon Bloodfire within the descendants of its royal bloodline.[37] These 'bloodflames' were in reality the Iridescent Moon's former power fused with Abyssal corruption, and had the special ability to leave behind afterimages of any person they burned, earning them the moniker of "Two Worlds' Flames" for ostensibly bridging the gap between life and death.

Present

When Tartaglia was fourteen, he ran away from home, and after falling into a deep hole, he found himself in the Abyss. There, he encountered a swordswoman, Skirk, who trained him, taught him to navigate the Abyss, and nurtured his ability to raise endless conflict no matter where he went.[14][39]

When Scaramouche joined the Fatui and had his seal unlocked by Il Dottore, the Tsaritsa and Pierro would have him lead expeditions into the Abyss. Whatever he found there got him promoted to the Sixth of the Fatui Harbinger, though following this promotion he was ordered to be on standby.[40][41]

After the Traveler retrieves the Bloodbranch Coral so Sangonomiya Kokomi could perform the Watatsumi Goryou Matsuri, a ritual used to reverse Watatsumi Island's Holy Soil phenomenon. However, unexpectedly, the phenomenon failed to reverse and merely halted. Concerned, the Divine Priestess sent a team to investigate, only to discover that Enkanomiya was shrouded in a mysterious darkness.[3] This darkness turned out to be the encroachment of the Void Realm, instigated by Enjou, who convinced the Bathysmal Vishaps to disrupt the Towers of the Three Realms in favor of the Void Realm. The vishaps, eager to overthrow human presence, complied, only to discover that they were even more susceptible to Abyssal power. Tsumi went to the Watatsumi troops in the guise of a shrine maiden to aid in repelling the Void Realm, rescue the vishaps trapped under the Dainichi Mikoshi, and perhaps even destroy the tower. Although she succeeds in her former two goals, she ultimately finds herself unable to carry through with her last objective.[42]

When the Traveler arrived at Natlan, they learned about the peoples' history with the Abyss and how they continually fought against them. After one Night Warden War, the Abyss attacked the People of the Springs, but the attack was repulsed by the tribe. Nonetheless, it served as a warning for the other tribes to prepare for the possibility of attack. Kachina failed to return from the war despite the usage of the Ode of Resurrection (as the team had won), prompting Mavuika to suspend further pilgrimages and wars until the situation could be resolved. A group consisting of Mualani, Iansan, Chasca and the Traveler entered the Night Kingdom and rescued Kachina, while removing some corruption from the Children of Echoes' Wayob. The Abyss attempted to swallow the group whole and managed to close an exit back to the surface, but Mavuika saved the group by sacrificing her keepsakes to break into the Night Kingdom.[43]

Eventually, another hero was discovered by Ororon after he had a new desire to continue living, prompting the Abyss to increase the frequency of their attacks upon realizing he was one of the two heroes that had not been found yet. The Abyss soon enacted a full-scale invasion of the entire nation, particularly in the Flower-Feather Clan as their hero had yet to be discovered. The invasion initially appeared to have trouble getting a foothold, but the Abyss soon ramped up the invasion with the Heart of the Abyss, Gosoythoth, at the helm. Gosoythoth began dropping more dangerous monsters with the use of Abyssal Tumors and Pylons, slowly beginning to overwhelm the defenses all over the nation. Eventually, the final hero was discovered as Chasca after she accepted the grief of losing Chuychu, and with all six heroes now found, Mavuika channeled their and Ronova's power to end the invasion for good. She could sense that the Abyss had retreated to the depths of the Night Kingdom, and asked the Traveler to accompany her when the time came to stomp the Abyss out of Natlan for good.[44] When the time came, Mavuika asked the Traveler to accompany her on an expedition into the deepest depths of the Night Kingdom to destroy the Abyss' forces for good. Gosoythoth did all it could to repel them, but they had help from the souls of the people who were lost to the Abyss' full-scale invasion. Thanks to them, they were able to reach Gosoythoth, which fought them itself by manifesting the Lord of Eroded Primal Fire from the memories of the late Pyro Sovereign. During the battle, the Traveler finally gains the ability to wield the Pyro element for themselves, which they use alongside Mavuika to eradicate Gosoythoth and its forces for good, ending Natlan's war against the Abyss.

The Traveler also descended into the Ancient Sacred Mountain, discovering traces of Abyssal influence in the area and purging whatever they ran into while exploring the ancient city.

According to Helka, Katya told her that the Abyss' influence was growing in Snezhnaya and that she avoid the northern paths into the city if she returned.[45] Their influence is spread far across Nod-Krai; the most prominent group is The Wild Hunt, consisting of corrupted entities in search of something and have existed since the cataclysm.[46] The influence is strongest at Kipumaki Cliff, where a massive Evil Eye watches over the corroded land. Numerous strange entities prowl the area. People who attempt to explore Kipumaki Cliff will find themselves slowly corrupted by the Abyss. The Traveler would later assist the Lightkeepers in destroying the abyssal influence in the area and eliminating Rauthvangi, the mastermind behind the land's corruption.

The Traveler would additionally discover a facility that had been built in order to protect against the "apocalypse" and ventured inside, discovering that the facility's failsafes had broken down due to abyssal corrosion. One of the personnel who had been stationed there during the Cataclysm, Morozov, was secretly aligned with Rauthvangi and had transformed into an abyssal entity which called itself the Ultimate Calamity, believing that the apocalypse had destroyed everything outside the bunker. The Traveler destroyed the entity before leaving the laboratory with one of the Proof of the Cognoscenti which had been left there.[47] Raimo, another person aligned with Rauthvangi, would infest Dreadshade Mire until the Traveler restored the sealing pillars in the area and defeated it.[48]

As a result of Rerir's expulsion back into the moon's reflection, the Wild Hunt was left leaderless, prompting the Abyss to create an imitation of Roland in order to resume its attack in the region. The imitation infested the remains of Boreas that had been left behind and caused a resurgence of attacks that threatened the land. The Traveler, alongside Varka, the remaining Knights of Favonius and Lightkeepers, managed to calm the god remains down following a risky plan that involved Varka being sent to the heart of the wolf. Roland's energies expired after he had a showdown with Varka, and with Boreas' remains deciding to pass his energies into the Ley Lines, the Wild Hunt was severely weakened and left leaderless once again.[49]

Trivia

  • The Abyss is the only enemy group that does not have any Common Enemies.
  • The color of Marana's Avatar and the effects of Marana, or the The Withering, on Teyvat implied that "forbidden knowledge" has some link to the Abyss. Greater Lord Rukkhadevata confirmed that the "forbidden knowledge" originated from the very bottom of the Abyss, which also doesn't belong to Teyvat. Nahida would later remark that forbidden knowledge was a manifestation of the Abyss that was most devastating to Sumeru, specifically.[50]
  • Aksinya states that the world of "love" once experienced in ancient Teyvat as a result of the Light Realm was run dry "beneath the weight of countless sorrows," turning into a void of "envy, hatred, and selfish desire."[51] This aligns with Neuvillette's description of the original order of the planet being turned into the "resentments and loathing of the world."[52] Both descriptions closely resemble Barbeloth's description of the Abyss as being "the hatred carried by all the fates that will not come to pass."[1] As with the Belyi Tsar's analysis,[4] this implies that the transformation of the Light Realm into the Human Realm by the Heavenly Principles caused the creation of the Abyss on Teyvat in some manner.

Etymology

  • In both English and Chinese, the term "abyss" (Chinese: 深渊 Shēnyuān, lit. "deep abyss"), can refer to a literal bottomless (or unfathomably deep) pit, or used in a figurative sense to refer to a catastrophic or destructive situation.[53][54][55]
  • The Chinese name for the Void Realm is 虚无界, which is similar to but distinct from the "Void" used in Bathysmal Vishap Experimental Records, which is 虚空. As adjectives, both can mean "empty" or "void," but as nouns, 虚无 means "nothingness" whereas 虛空 means "empty space" or "sky."
