Great Volcano of Tollan

The Great Volcano of Tollan, also known as the Ancient Sacred Mountain, is an active volcano that encompasses the whole of Atocpan, Natlan. It is located within the southwestern region of Natlan and will periodically erupt.

Descriptions

Eruption Mechanic

When the volcano erupts and if the player is within the Atocpan region, fireballs will start continuously spewing out of the volcano onto the ground for a period of time until the eruption ends. These projectiles will deal Pyro DMG to both the player and enemies alike if hit by them. In certain areas, giant boulders will start rolling down towards the player.

Gameplay Notes

• If players leave Atocpan or teleport to a different region outside of Atocpan, the eruption will end.
• Eruptions occur in predictable patterns:
  • Eruptions will occur every 20 minutes of continuous real-time gameplay within the Atocpan region. Pausing the game with loading the map or using the Paimon menu will pause the timer, and changing the in game time will not alter the volcano's pattern.
  • Eruptions are also guaranteed to occur 180 seconds after arriving in Natlan, whether by walking into the region, teleporting to the region, or logging into the game when having previously logged out while in the region.
  • Eruptions are also guaranteed to occur when arriving at specific locations within Atocpan, such as just south of Atocpan's most northwest Teleport Waypoint.
• Each eruption lasts for about 50 seconds.‍^{[ver­i­fi­ca­tion need­ed]}
• Enemies will find cover when an eruption starts, but will pursue the player into the open if combat mode is triggered.
• Eruptions interrupt rain. Rain can resume after the eruption.

Lore

The Great Volcano was once the dwelling of the ancient dragons, and their palace was located somewhere beneath the magma.^[1] According to legend, it is from this palace that Kukulkan stole the primal fire in the form of Pyrophosphorite.^[2][3] It is also said to be the place where Xbalanque fought and defeated Xiuhcoatl after the latter became corrupted by the Abyss.^[4]

Sometime after the dragon civilization crumbled, the Abyss is said to have taken over the volcano.^[5][1]

The power of the two Golden Entreaties is closely tied to the Great Volcano of Tollan. It is said that bringing both of them to the volcano can remove the Flamelord's Blessing from a Saurian.^[6]

Trivia

• Tollan is the name used by the capital cities of two Mesoamerican empires: Teotihuacan and the Toltec capital, Tula, both in Mexico.
• The Teyvat map includes "bubbling" and "eruption" sound effects for the Great Volcano of Tollan.
  • "Bubbling" sound effects will play when the map is zoomed in to at least slightly more than what is required to show map markers such as the ones for restaurants.
  • "Eruption" sound effects that correspond to the "eruption" visual effects will play when the map is zoomed in to at least roughly halfway between the level required for the "bubbling" sound effects and the maximum zoom-in level.
  • Both sound effects also require the center of the screen to not be too far from the volcano. The valid radius is roughly equal to the distance from the volcano to the green edge of Atocpan; this does not cover all of Atocpan, as both of the two southwesternmost islands are out of range.
  • The volume of the sound effects is higher when zoomed in further, when the Great Volcano of Tollan is closer to the center of the screen, and when the Teyvat map layer is selected.

Etymology

• Tollan is a Nahuatl word which means "place where Tules abound."
• Tōllān is a mythical place of origin in many Mesoamerican culture such as those of the Aztecs and the Kʼicheʼ people. In the K’iche’ epic of Popol Vuh the first people created are gathered at Tollan, the place of seven caves, where they receive their languages and their gods.
• In many Mesoamerican myths, the city of Tollan was ruled by Quetzalcoatl, the "Feathered Serpent."
