Paimon

Paimon is the deuteragonist of Genshin Impact. She is a quest-exclusive NPC who accompanies the Traveler throughout their adventure in Teyvat as their guide. She met the Traveler when the latter fished her out of the sea, after which she mentions she would have drowned if not saved by the Traveler.[8]
She currently represents Genshin Impact as its mascot and is used as the icon for the game, its official website, and various social media accounts.
Profile
Despite her omnipresence in the story, marketing, and player communication, Paimon is something of an enigma with regard to the plot and Teyvat. Nothing is known about her life between the Cataclysm and prior to meeting the Traveler, nor what she was doing or what she was like prior to her arrival in Khaenri'ah,[3] and even her basic nature is still unclear. It seems that even Paimon herself does not remember these details; she admits to Dr. Luneva that she isn't sure what her own species is, but is basically a human on a medical level.[9] What is known according to herself is that she never encountered trouble, and the worst thing that ever happened was that she got 'super tired, got caught in some strange whirlpool and sucked out to sea', which was resolved when the Traveler fished her out.[10]
Kukulkan calls her an emissary,[11] but who she is affiliated to, if anyone, is unclear given her severed ties to both Celestia and Khaenri'ah.[3] However, she remains affected by any changes to Irminsul, which only affects those native to Teyvat.[12][13]
She is resistant to certain phenomena which would usually require a Vision or other elemental affinity to withstand, such as concentrated Ley Line energy[14] and Abyssal contamination.[15] When Mavuika stated that Paimon shouldn't accompany her and the Traveler to the final battle in the Night Kingdom, it was because the Abyss would likely make the non-combatant Paimon a target, not that the lethal levels of corruption would do any harm to her.[16] Even without a Vision or any apparent elemental affinity, she is able to dive with the Traveler in Fontaine, and is shown speaking underwater.
Personality
Paimon has a bubbly, outgoing, honest, and somewhat naïve demeanor. As a result, she occasionally comes across as blunt and rude. She is obvious about who she likes and dislikes, often giving "ugly nicknames" to those who annoy her, such as calling Venti the "Tone-Deaf Bard" and Arataki Itto as "Bull Chucker" (although she currently uses these as playful banter). Despite her small stature and sassy nature, Paimon cares for and comforts the people around her, occasionally acting like a big sister, especially toward children. She also shows great enthusiasm for food, rare treasures, and Mora.
Despite occasionally bantering with the Traveler, Paimon is very attached to them and is shown to be fiercely loyal. She always sticks by their side no matter the danger and tries to keep them on their feet, including against overwhelming odds like Archons, the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, or a Sinner. She becomes anxious whenever the Traveler seemingly disappears or is separated from her.[17] Paimon has also revealed that her biggest wish is for the Traveler's wish to come true, and has sworn to stay by their side.
Appearance
Paimon is a petite, bipedal creature with a short stature. She has thick, shoulder-length white hair with soft curls at the ends. Her eyes are dark purple with bright white pupils, and she has light skin. In several promotional artworks, one of the strands of hair on the left side of her head fades to black.
She wears a white long-sleeved jumper adorned with rose-gold designs and trims, including a triquetra symbol on the chest. Her sleeves and boots are accented with rose-gold ornamental cuffs. She wears white stockings and white boots. A navy-blue scarf wraps around her neck, and behind her floats a star-flecked cape with a celestial design and glowing constellations. She wears a rose-gold halo-shaped tiara that levitates above her head and a dark star-shaped accessory decorates her hair. When she moves, she leaves behind a trail of small floating constellations.
History
Past
Prior to the Cataclysm, Paimon was pulled down from Celestia by Pierro in a bid to impress the Vinster King Irmin. This failed, and due to Pierro's rivalry with Hroptatyr, the future Fatui Director ignored her while she stayed at his palace. At the time, she was no different in personality as she would be in the modern day, and her mind was described as similar to a newborn. Paimon later lost her memories of these events, though never lost the connection she felt between her and Pierro.[3]

- A recurring gag in the game is calling Paimon "Emergency Food."
- The first instance of this can be found in Wind-Riding Knight in Prologue: Act I - The Outlander Who Caught the Wind, where the Traveler, during their first meeting with Amber, has the option of introducing Paimon as "Emergency Food."
- While having a conversation with Little Xing, he questions if Paimon is "some kind of food?"
- During Friendship in Writing in Yae Miko's Story Quest, Divina Vulpes Chapter: Act I - The Great Narukami Offering, the Traveler is tasked with forming ideas for a short novel based on their travels. For the novel's first chapter, one of the options is "Reincarnated in Another World: Encounters with Airborne Emergency Rations."
- Verr Goldet, the boss of Wangshu Inn, describes Paimon as a "floating elf companion." Notably, she is one of the few characters who remarks on Paimon's appearance, as others tend to refer to her as a "mysterious flying pet" or some other similar term.
- The term Verr Goldet uses in Chinese is 精灵 jīnglíng, which broadly refers to fantastical creatures like elves, fairies, and spirits. This term has also been used to describe Barbatos' original form before becoming an Archon, Klee and Alice's race, and the Oceanids.
- Starsnatcher describes Paimon as a "talking fairy," or "talking mini Seelie" (会说话的小仙灵) in Chinese, though Paimon is confused by this remark about her.
- Over time, Paimon has grown to be noticed and commented on by other Teyvatians, becoming renowned as "the Traveler's flying companion".
- Vseslav mistakes her for a young Vila.
- Paimon's exchange with Venti in State of the Holy Lyre der Himmel in Prologue: Act II - For a Tomorrow Without Tears, where she responds to Venti's "Hehe." with "What do you mean 'hehe'?", has been alluded to twice in the story thus far. Once was during the World Quest Date's Challenge with Date responding to Paimon with "What do you mean 'hehe'?!", and another was the Traveler's response to Paimon during the Event World Quest Eight Locales Over Mountains and Seas: Two Cities' Recommendations in Eight Locales Over Mountains and Seas.
- During the Closed Beta Tests, Paimon was used as a spokesperson, replying to the questions and suggestions on the official Facebook page.
- In the image used to announce the end of CBT1, Paimon is featured with an unknown staff alongside her.
- Paimon's role as the mascot of Genshin Impact is similar to Ai-Chan, the mascot for Honkai Impact 3rd, another game by HoYoverse.
- Paimon represents some parts of the gameplay system in Genshin Impact.
- HoYoverse's official announcement and developer messages are sent by "P·A·I·M·O·N" in the mail system. This is different from Paimon's own mail, which is signed simply as "Paimon."
- The pause menu is called the "Paimon Menu," and is indicated in-game by an icon resembling Paimon's head.
- Despite the Traveler fishing Paimon out of the water at the beginning of the game, fishing was not released until Version 2.1.
- It is hinted that Paimon cannot swim.
- During Bird's Eye View in Prologue: Act I - The Outlander Who Caught the Wind, when the Traveler swims to the island in Starfell Lake, she floats above them just over the water.
- During Home of the Hot Springs in Chapter V: Act I - Flowers Resplendent on the Sun-Scorched Sojourn, when the Traveler goes into the hot springs with Mualani, Paimon is seen using a pool tube to stay afloat.
- During As Though Kissed by Dew in Enchanted Tales of the Mikawa Festival: After-Night, inside the Aisa Bathhouse, Paimon is seen using a pool tube to stay afloat while telling Sayu not to fall asleep in the bath.
- Paimon claims to be "the god of protection," her reasoning being that she considers herself the Traveler's bodyguard.[18]
- It is jokingly suggested, by Paimon herself, that she has more than one stomach, where one of them specifically contains liquids.[19]
- From Version 3.1 onwards, when players open the Paimon Menu, they can blow on their PS5 controller's microphone to change Paimon's idle animation. When done enough times, this elicits a comment from Paimon wondering where the "wind" came from, and repeating this in Version 3.2 will eventually have Paimon call out the player.
- Paimon dislikes being alone.[20]
- Paimon is enrolled in the Akademiya, specifically Vahumana, and was enrolled by Alhaitham. [1][2]
- The symbol on Paimon's clothing is an upside-down triquetra, one of the prominent symbols in Teyvat. She also bears the celestial motif on her sleeves and boots.
- Paimon's headpiece shares design elements with a fully-upgraded Statue of The Seven. The ring that forms around the statue at Level 10 has the same design as the ring that forms the base of her headpiece, while the vertical protrusion on her headpiece is a simplified version of the diamond-shaped leaf motif that appears upon upgrading the statue to Level 6.
- There's something of a resemblance between Paimon and the Four Great Rulers, sharing her hair colour, or a longer version of her hairstyle, her hairpin resembling the shape of the Ruler of Space's portals, and her ability to have control over time in her own menu just like the the Ruler of Time.
- Some architectural elements and goblets found in Asmoday's Temple of Space feature a color palette similar to Paimon's outfit, including rose gold and white tones, along with recurring motifs such as four-pointed stars and the triquetra symbol.
- Paimon is the only one who was not sent to the "Apathic Interval" (referred to as "Hell" in Chapter 2) within the Temple of Space. When Istoria questions this, the Traveler jokingly suggests that it may be because Paimon rarely thinks about anything beyond eating and sleeping. Istoria immediately accepts this explanation, though Paimon herself never confirms the actual reason.[22]
- The headpiece (crown) floating above Paimon is similar to that of the Circlet of Logos (理之冠, lit. Crown of Reason/Logos, sharing the same Chinese character as 天理 the Heavenly Principles), of which the circlet also represents the Heavenly Principles.
- The Frostmoon Scions reference the Heavenly Principles as Pitkamoonen, when the characters used for the transliteration of the term, Pàikǎiméngníng (Chinese: 派凱蒙宁), are intentionally made to contain Pài (Chinese: 派) and Méng (Chinese: 蒙), which also make up Pàiméng (Chinese: 派蒙) (Paimon).[23]

- Paimon shares her birthday with Arataki Itto on June 1, International Day for Protection of Children, a widely celebrated holiday for children in countries such as Armenia, Burma, Cambodia, China, Ethiopia, Mongolia, Russia, and Portugal. The two sharing their birthdays on this date may relate to their childlike nature and soft spot for children.
- Paimon's nickname, Flying Lavender Melon, given to her by Itto during Archon Quest The Unexpected Guest in Interlude Chapter: Act II - Perilous Trail, is referenced in the The Three Undeceivables ending quote of Heizou's Hangout Event.
- In the quest Counterfeit Classics, during the section where Traveler and Paimon entered the book "Tale of the Lochknight Aerinny". Traveler turned into a knight, while Paimon became a flying lavender melon.
- Kaeya once used the following address to deliver mail to the Traveler using a guaranteed delivery service: "Next to a small white-haired talking fairy", so the Traveler's mail address is, quite literally, Paimon.[24]
- Paimon has a "hidden stash" of funds in her shoes,[25] as well as an Emergency Backpack, though it is unclear where she keeps it.[26]
- One such stash is her "Food Fund" that she saves Mora in a lidded glass jar designed after a Slime, with a coin slot in the lid.[27]
- The combined pollen from Rainbow Roses, Glaze Lilies, and Cecilias gives her terrible hay fever.[28]
- In World Quest Book of Esoteric Revelations, the Melusine Canotila describes Paimon as a "little rainbow balloon floating in the air," with a string extending "upward, to somewhere above the sky itself." Paimon is confused and surprised by the comparison. When questioned about the accuracy of her vision, Canotila insists she is telling the truth, adding that Melusines have the ability to see things that humans cannot.
- Most characters with the gift of seership are unable to read Paimon's fate, getting blank results when attempting to read it.[29][30] The Seer-Witch Barbeloth appears to be the exception, but hesistated to reveal what she had seen. In a serious tone, she questioned whether Paimon truly wished to know her own fate, then fell silent without giving an answer.[31]
- In the Messily-Written Note found in Arama's house, the Traveler is compared to the "golden one" and Paimon to the "silver one," with the note stating, “The golden one is like a big sun and the silver one is like a little moon, gentle and bright…”[32] Similarly, Arayasa refers to them as “the colors of the sun and moon,” reflecting their close friendship.[33]
