Skofnungr

Skofnungr is a quest-exclusive NPC who appears in the Skirk's Story Quest, Crystallina Chapter: Act I - Whispers Betwixt Stars and Night.

Profile

Skofnungr was the eldest sibling in his family of Khaenri'ahn nobles. He was expected to inherit the family title, but soon contracted an incurable illness as a child. Despite his efforts to prove himself, he was shunned by both his peers and family until he met Surtalogi. Though both young children had different upbringings, Skofnungr noted that Surtalogi did not appear to care about his circumstances. Surtalogi convinced Skofnungr to fight for his life despite the circumstances. The two became friends and sparred with each other, which allowed Skofnungr to enjoy the thrill of combat. When he was ten, Surtalogi snuck into the royal library and used forbidden knowledge to cure his illness. Shortly afterwards, Skofnungr realized that Surtalogi surpassed him and he was too embarrassed to spar with him out of shame.^[3]

At some point after the Cataclysm, when Ronova cursed the pure-blooded Khaenri'ahns with immortality, Surtalogi completed his "grand endeavor" and met with Skofnungr a final time before leaving Teyvat. He offered to remove the curse of immortality from him, but Skofnungr declined, wanting to use the time in order to improve his strength and spar with him in the future. Surtalogi warned him that it could possibly be a long time before he returned and that Skofnungr's spirit would not be able to hold out by then. Skofnungr was not discouraged, so Surtalogi told him that if he ever changed his mind, he should seek out his disciple. Skofnungr was surprised upon the mention of the word, but Surtalogi told him that Vedrfolnir had told him to do so. He also told him that if he insisted on getting stronger, there was a farewell gift for him at the Primordial Sea. Skofnungr went there and discovered a beaten All-Devouring Narwhal, taking a part of its flesh and sewed it into his heart, gaining some of its powers in the process.^[3]

Sometime after the resolution of Fontaine's prophecy, Skofnungr targeted the Traveler, trapping them in a realm and stole a part of their soul after becoming intrigued by their power to purify abyssal energy.^[4] Seeking to acquire any scraps of power he could find, Skofnungr sent Riftwolves to Liyue to gather god remains, killed numerous Consecrated Beasts in Sumeru and even stole several Stella Fortunas from the skies above.^[4] With Skirk's help, the Traveler was able to pinpoint Skofnungr's hideout in The Chasm and attempted to confront him. Skirk called him out on his claim and realized that he knew Surtalogi, addressing him by his title, "The Foul," which enraged him.^[5] Surprised by the power emanating from Skirk, he managed to steal some of her power at the cost of the stolen soul fragment before they retreated, and he spent his time attempting to absorb the power he stole.^[5]

The trio later returned to his hideout to confront him a second time. During the fight, Skirk allowed Skofnungr to take more of her power, causing him to overload and shatter his armor. He explained his story to the group and wished to see the fight between Skirk and Surtalogi, but he soon collapsed, his mind and body unable to grasp the power he took. He asked Skirk to end his life, but she declined, instead taking his consciousness and smashing it to pieces. This act would take advantage of the Curse of Immortality to preserve his life and restore his mind at the cost of losing the powers he had taken over a long time, which he accepted, hoping that he could wake up in time to witness their fight. Before Skirk destroyed his consciousness, Skofnungr concluded that he had reached his peak and was pleased to see that Skirk had others to help her on her goals.^[3]
