Tighnari is the current leader of the Forest Rangers.

Personality

A young researcher well-versed in botany who currently serves as a Forest Watcher in Avidya Forest. He is a straight shooter with a warm heart — and a dab hand at guiding even the dullest of pupils.

Being a Forest Watcher, Tighnari is highly knowledgeable about various species of both plants and animals, particularly flowers and mushrooms, having grown an interest due to studying his parents' books when he was young. He spends a great deal of time in Sumeru's rainforests, studying various species of plants and ensuring that the ecosystem is healthy and balanced. As the Chief Officer of the Forest Watchers, he takes his job very seriously and offers advice to those willing to listen and sternly lectures those who don't. He is very loyal to those whom he considers his friends and cares about them very deeply.

Due to his Valuka Shuna heritage, Tighnari is particularly sensitive to weather, disliking the wind and thunder. While his kind used to live in the desert, Tighnari, having a darker shade of fur (which he attributes to his kind migrating to the forests), is notably unable to tolerate the desert heat, causing him to suffer from heatstroke faster than others. He acknowledges this as one of his weaknesses.

He serves as a mentor to Collei, who in turn sees him as a Master of some sorts and holds him with high regard. He places a lot of value on knowledge, and thus oversees her education seriously, ensuring that she understands the content to the best of her ability. While he is friends with Cyno, he does not appreciate his jokes, having been exposed to many unfunny jokes and considers them embarrassing.

Appearance

Tighnari uses the medium male model. He has fair skin, chin-length dark green hair with black roots and light green streaks at the front, and pale-pupiled eyes that fade from brown to green. He also possesses large, pointy black ears and a fluffy tail in two shades of dark green.

History

Past

Tighnari was born to an unnamed father and mother who are still alive but have yet to be seen in-game. Unlike most people of Sumeru, Tighnari is a Tighnarian, a species originally hailing from Sumeru's deserts. However, by the time he was born, the majority of the species had relocated to Sumeru's rainforests. When he learned of his species' past, Tighnari expressed an interest to visit the desert, but when the time came, he immediately collapsed upon entering only a few meters inside and had to be rushed back to the rainforest. Ever since, he has avoided the desert whenever possible.^[6]

Tighnari attended Sumeru Akademiya for his education, enrolling under the Amurta branch and was personally tutored by its sage, Naphis. Through this he would learn of his master's temper, but he kept on good terms with him even after graduating.^[7] After leaving the Akademiya, Tighnari joined the Forest Rangers and saw that it was lacking in coherent organization. His knowledge and personality quickly catapulted him into becoming the chief officer of the group.^[8] One of the situations he had to resolve was excessive picking of a particular flower in the rainforests. Rather than banning the harvest of the flower, Tighnari suggested to the merchants that the Forest Rangers would pick the flowers for them, advising them of the flower's properties and that any that were returned by the second day would be given back as a dried decoration. This proved to work well with both groups.^[9]

He would also become acquainted with Cyno, Alhaitham and Kaveh at some point. When Cyno learned of a girl stricken with Eleazar in Mondstadt, he went to retrieve her. Cyno later entrusted the girl, Collei, to Tighnari, who began to take care of her symptoms. He also decided to personally oversee her education, teaching her about the rainforest.

At the time, most of the sages of the Akademiya were convinced by Dottore to create a new god to replace Lesser Lord Kusanali, though Naphis refused and was apprehended as a result. The Akademiya would send representatives to convince Tighnari to join their project, refusing to reveal what they were doing. In turn, Tighnari rejected each and every proposal, aware of his master's reputation and that he would've been personally scolded by Naphis if it was truly as important as they claimed.

Present

The Traveler first encounters Tighnari after falling unconscious from Haypasia's smoke. The two discovered them and brought them to Gandharva Ville for recovery, where he learned of the Traveler's vision. Tighnari did not say much about it, leading to the Traveler to suspect that he was hiding something and decided to ask Collei about the matter.^[10] When Collei's symptoms flared up, Tighnari asked the Traveler to accompany him in gathering some materials to make medicine. He then learned of a new Withering Zone and eliminated it with the Traveler's help, resulting in him revealing to the Traveler he was unsure of what to do until he could gauge their trust. Following this, a Dusk Bird arrived to inform him that Haypasia was in need of rations, so he sent the Traveler to deliver it to them. While they ran this errand, the Akademiya returned to ask for his assistance in their project, which he vehemently refused and saw them off.^[7]

Learning of a strangely similar zone to the Withering in the rainforest, Tighnari asked the Traveler to accompany him into investigating the anomaly. They soon discovered that the workshop was created by one of his former friends, Abattouy, who had died following an accident in his research. To honor his friend, Tighnari destroyed most of the papers to prevent the Akademiya from getting their hands on it and also took in his creation, Karkata, repairing and moving it to Pardis Dhyai.^[11]

Haypasia's meditation resulted in her making contact with a "newly born god," causing her to lose her mind. Seeing this, Tighnari brought her to Pardis Dhyai for further evaluation, preventing the matra from exiling her to the desert. When he heard a commotion in the area, he saw the Traveler fighting some Eremites, assisting them in driving the mercenaries off. Learning of their experiences with Nahida, he deduced that she was the Dendro Archon and seeing her work with them convinced him to help them out too.^[12]

Gathering more allies to oppose the Akademiya, the Traveler is later sent to Pardis Dhyai to look for Tighnari, as they believed he would still have enough trust with the Akademiya so they could adjust their plan if needed. Tighnari had finished speaking with Dottore, who asked for Haypasia, though he refused to let him have her. Dottore sent the Fatui on Tighnari while the Traveler and Dehya were distracted, but they returned just in time to drive them off. Shortly after this, Scaramouche demonstrated his new powers and peppered the area with lightning bolts, one of which struck Tighnari, injuring him.^[13] The Traveler is ultimately able to stop the Akademiya's plans, while Nahida removed Greater Lord Rukkhadevata from Irminsul, causing the removal of Eleazar from people and curing Collei of her illness. This resulted in an increased workload for the Rangers, but he was thankful for everything that had happened.^[14]

Following her recovery, Collei wished to return to Mondstadt to bring the good news to the people of Mondstadt. Tighnari and Cyno decided to accompany her for her safety, though on a personal side, he wished to learn about Mondstadt's fauna so he could pass the knowledge to his colleagues. They met the Traveler and later Albedo and Sucrose. Tighnari quickly bonded with Albedo due to their shared desire of learning.^[15] Both acknowledged that Collei's personality was changing for the better, and he was pleased when he learned that Collei had befriended Sucrose.^[16]

During a joint event composing of both the Wisdom Gala and Interdarshan Championship, Tighnari served as the Amurta representative for the tournament. While he was surprised to learn that he could participate in spite of being a graduate, he initially contemplated refusing, but realized that he was going to host a public lecture the next month. He reasoned that if he partook in the tournament, interest in the lecture might grow and he ultimately decided to participate. He was also pleased by the change of mood in the city now that Azar and his lackeys were disposed of. In the first round, the contestants were tasked with capturing swiftflies, and Tighnari used his biological expertise to gain a head start.^[17] In the next round, the contestants were sent to the outskirts of Aaru Village, and Tighnari's lack of heat tolerance led him to suffer from heatstroke. The Wanderer passed by and gave some water for the Traveler to give to him. Cyno arrived shortly afterwards and they brought him back to the village to recuperate.^[18] In the final round, Tighnari tried to claim the Diadem but failed. Kaveh suffered a headache when he interacted with it, leading to Tighnari to ask if he was okay.^[19] Kaveh later treated him to a meal, where they discussed about the diadem and Kaveh's actions. Although he did not win the tournament, Tighnari was pleased to learn that there was significant interest in his upcoming lecture and even offered Kaveh to join to share some pointers.^[20]

When Cyno learned that his master had disappeared into the desert following an unusual case with the true Temple of Silence, Tighnari decided to accompany him into the desert in spite of his condition. His presence was a welcome sight for their leader, Bamoun, who acknowledged the ties between Tighnari's people and Hermanubis. In the ensuing trials, Tighnari fought against two Primal Constructs as part of an agreed duel and he witnessed Cyno best Sethos. After the duel, Tighnari appreciated the knowledge that his species had a good relationship with the Temple of Silence.^[21]

The authorities at Port Ormos later held a flower exhibition, with Tighnari arriving to help out with a few details. He became acquainted with Emilie before the exhibition, who had asked him if he or other people had discovered any new flowers in the area, as one of the showcased flowers was relatively new. The exhibition soon ran into problems after people were attacked, and Tighnari went to the Akademiya to see if a "Vijava" had enrolled. He sent Collei to inform Emilie and the Traveler of his discoveries, leading them to conclude that there was a more sinister plot in play.^[22]

At some point after the events in Nod-Krai, Tighnari agreed to go on a shopping trip with Collei. When the day came, she discovered that Sethos was her master while Tighnari had become the General Mahamatra, who failed to recognize her, causing her to fall unconscious. This was revealed to be a vision due to the remains of Nabu Malikata having been implanted in her, foreseeing a dangerous future. Collei reported the incident to Nahida, who delved into Irminsul to troubleshoot the problem, while the authorities began evacuating the city in the event that something was truly wrong; Tighnari was one of those assisting in evacuation efforts when the Traveler came to the city to get answers. The authorities initially moved everyone to Caravan Ribat, but they had to move them to Aaru Village when the strange phenomena continued to creep closer towards them.^[23] There, they were attacked by the jinn from multiple sides, with Tighnari, Collei and Dori holding one front. As the situation looked dire, Tighnari urged Collei to assist the others, but Collei did not want to abandon him. At that moment, a voice gave Collei instructions on how to pacify the jinn, and when Collei did so, Tighnari was left in awe at what he witnessed and led him to suspect that there were notable god remains in her.^[24]

Once Nahida regained consciousness and began to identify the suspect, a massive Irminsul root burst from Lokapala Jungle, horrifying many present. To stop its continued growth, the Aaru system would be used to compete with Irminsul and Tighnari was relegated to ad-hoc support.^[25] Once the technical support was completed, Tighnari accompanied the Traveler and Wanderer to infiltrate the Sanctuary of Surasthana; when they arrived, the Wanderer dismissed him, stating that the others would need his help.^[26] The people of Sumeru were able to drive the Fatui away from their nation, after which Tighnari graduated Collei, making her an official Forest Ranger. Along with Cyno, they accompanied her to Mondstadt for a brief trip before returning to Sumeru.^[27]

• Tighnari's constellation seems to represent a Fennec fox (desert fox), an animal that is native to the North African deserts as a whole.
• Tighnari is the first Dendro character in the game to be released, alongside Collei being the first 4-star Dendro character to be released.
  • It is arguable that Baizhu is the first observable Dendro character in the game prior to the Version 3.0 update but was released patches later than Tighnari.

Etymology

• The name Tighnari is likely derived in part from al-Tighnari (Arabic: الطغنري), an Arab botanist, traveler, physician, and poet from the period of Islamic Golden Age. Tignar is the name of the disappeared village where al-Tighnari was born and nicknamed as, which is located between the existing Albolote and Macarena in the province of Granada, modern day Spain.
• Additionally, the name Tighnari also has roots in Tamazight, a major language of the Amazigh, an ethnic group indigenous to, and spread throughout, North Africa. Much of Tighnari's design has potential inspirations from traditional Amazigh clothing and accessories, and his ears and tail are those of a fennec fox, also native to North Africa, making it likely that his name is an allusion to both the Arabic and Tamazight origins.
