Jarilo
Last updated 2026-03-14
Jarilo is the god of youth, life, springtime and war of Jarilo-VI's Pantheon in its Mythological Tales. He is the namesake of the planet.
Profile
Jarilo is the 10th son of Perun, and the brother and husband of Morana. He was born on the last night of February, and was abducted by Veles, becoming Jarilo's foster father. He did not want to spend his life underground. When he returns to the surface at the end of winter, he would use his powers to bring forth spring.[1]
His and Morana's fight in the endless cycles of life and death would be the myth to explain Jarilo-VI's Eternal Freeze.[1]
History
Myths
Jarilo was noticed by Morana, and the two quickly fell in love with each other and had their wedding in the summer. This marked a peace between Perun and Veles. However, Jarilo was not a faithful husband, and in return, Morana killed Jarilo, using his corpse to build a new home. With the death of Jarilo, Morana would become depressed, and bring about a cold, bitter winter.[1]
Morana would die at the year's end, being reborn as Vesna. At the same time, Jarilo would also be reborn and the myth would start all over again. The endless cycle of the myths would continue until Morana grew tired of her fate, and decides to stop being reborn, which causes a long winter.[1]
Realizing his mistake, Jarilo's depression and desperation due to Morana's death resulted in his sacrifice to bring back the spring.[1]
Scientific Basis
1,800 years before the Eternal Freeze, a tribe was celebrating the god of war, Jarroway, whom experts believed to be the precursor to Jarilo, and 1,200 years ago in the northern region of Nycatha, a festival known as "Jarilo" was celebrated in late spring or early summer.[1]
Before the Eternal Freeze, Jarilo was typical "birth-death-rebirth" god, associated with the cycle of the crops. However, Jarilo's myths changed to reflect the new environment brought by the Eternal Freeze.[1]
