• Smiling Shark and Dark-Horned Tiger are parodies of Three Kingdoms, a 2010 Chinese TV series which received mixed reviews for its controversial adaptation of the classic Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and has become a meme in China since the 2020s.
  • The names of Smiling Shark (Chinese: 笑面鲨) and Dark-Horned Tiger (Chinese: 乌角虎) are references to the quote “这对堂兄弟，可谓是一对笑面虎，两头乌角鲨。” "The Yuan cousins are a pair of smiling tigers and dark-horned sharks." by Gongsun Zan (Chinese: 公孙瓒) commenting on Yuan Shao (Chinese: 袁绍) and Yuan Shu (Chinese: 袁术) in Episode 11 of Three Kingdoms. This became a meme because it's an original line of the TV series and "dark-horned sharks" don't exist in any Chinese literature.
  • Dark-Horned Tiger's overworld voice lines in response to Smiling Shark are currently only available in Chinese.
    • Version 1 “可惜，符玄还是舍不得那张太卜案。” "Too bad, Fu Xuan still doesn't want to give away her Seat of the Master Diviner." is a reference to the quote “我看，你是舍不得这张帅案吧！” "I see, you just want to hold this table of commander-in-chief!" by Zhang Fei (Chinese: 张飞) to Zhuge Liang (Chinese: 诸葛亮) in Episode 55 of Three Kingdoms. While Liu Bei (Chinese: 刘备) was invited by Sun Quan (Chinese: 孙权) to visit the Eastern Wu state and marry his sister Sun Shangxiang (Chinese: 孙尚香), Zhang Fei believed in Eastern Wu's rumor of Zhuge Liang betraying Liu Bei. Zhang Fei confronted and blamed Zhuge Liang for not saving Liu Bei from Eastern Wu's possible assassination, and then flipped Zhuge Liang's table in anger. This became a meme because Zhang Fei flipping the table never happened in history or the novel.
    • Version 2 “我知道，泯灭帮战至最后一刻，自刎归天矣。” "I know, the Annihilation Gang fought to the last moment and eventually ended themselves." is a reference to the quote “列位弟兄，随我接战，战至最后一刻，自刎归天！” "Brothers in arms, fight with me, fight to the last moment until we end ourselves!" by Liu Bei during the Battle of Changban versus Cao Cao (Chinese: 曹操) in Episode 36 of Three Kingdoms. In history, Liu Bei's force was at a huge disadvatange in this battle and paid a heavy price to retreat. This line became a meme because the TV series' portrayal of Liu Bei is totally out of character.
  • "If you mean to kidnap me, you can eat my bat!" (Chinese: “敢绑我的架，我敲你的头！” "If you dare to kidnap me, I will knock your head with my bat!") is a reference to the quote “放肆！胆敢搜我的身，我砍你的头！” "How dare you! If you dare to search my body, I will chop your head off!" by Liu Bei to a guard of the Xuchang (Chinese: 许昌) palace in Episode 20 of Three Kingdoms. Xuchang served as Chancellor Cao Cao's de facto capital during the late Eastern Han dynasty. Liu Bei secretly met Emperor Xian of Han in the Xuchang palace and listened to the emperor's wish of annihilating Cao Cao. When Liu Bei left the palace, a guard stopped him to conduct a body search. Liu Bei got irritated but still allowed the body search. This became a meme because the TV series' portrayal of Liu Bei is totally out of character.
  • "Your arrival is like a banner catching the wind, or a scabbard finally meeting its blade!" (Chinese: “您一来，简直是狂风有了大旗、剑鞘有了宝剑啊！”) is a reference to the quote “苍天送徐州给主公，如同送一杆大旗给狂风、送一把宝剑给剑鞘。” "The Mandate of Heaven grants my lord Xuzhou, like a banner catching the wind, or a scabbard finally meeting its blade." by Xun Yu (Chinese: 荀彧) to Cao Cao in Episode 11 of Three Kingdoms. After a general of Tao Qian (Chinese: 陶谦), governor of Xuzhou, killed Cao Cao's father Cao Song (Chinese: 曹嵩), Cao Cao discussed with Xun Yu about declaring war on Tao Qian. This line became a meme for its weird metaphors.
  • "If the crew disbands, how are we supposed to put food on the table?" (Chinese: 剧组散了，我们吃什么？) is a reference to the quote “你走了我们吃什么？” "What are we eating if you quit?" by Cao Cao to Yuan Shu (Chinese: 袁术) in Episode 5 of Three Kingdoms. During a dinner in the war camps, Yuan Shu, irritated by Zhang Fei, threatened to quit the Campaign against Dong Zhuo (Chinese: 董卓) if Liu Bei, Guan Yu (Chinese: 关羽), and Zhang Fei were still in the coalition. Cao Cao persuaded Yuan Shu to stay, claiming that the coalition would have nothing to eat if Yuan Shu, manager of army food, quitted. Then, other generals in the coalition laughed and echoed "Yeah, what are we eating?"
  • "Capturing Yanqing multiple times" (Chinese: 七擒彦卿 "capturing Yanqing seven times") is a reference to Zhuge Liang capturing Meng Huo (Chinese: 孟获) seven times in Chapter 87-90 of the novel.
  • "Showing Jing Yuan mercy when she could have pressed her advantage" (Chinese: 义释景元) may refer to three events in the novel:
    • Guan Yu showing mercy to Cao Cao and releasing him at the end of the Battle of Red Cliffs in Chapter 50.
    • Guan Yu showing mercy to Huang Zhong (Chinese: 黄忠), which made Huang Zhong surrender and join Liu Bei's force in Chapter 53.
    • Zhang Fei showing mercy to Yan Yan (Chinese: 严颜), which made Yan Yan surrender and join Liu Bei's force in Chapter 63.
  • "History itself has always been total rubbish anyway!" (Chinese: 历史本来就胡言乱语！) is a reference to the quote “春秋胡言乱语。” "The Spring and Autumn Annals is total nonsense." by Cao Cao in Episode 16 of Three Kingdoms, part of the adaptation of his famous story of cutting off his hair as a replacement of executing himself (Chinese: 割发代首).     • In the TV series, Xun Yu quoted the Spring and Autumn Annals to prove that Cao Cao was exempt from punishment, but Cao Cao declared the Spring and Autumn Annals nonsense, which became a meme because it never happened in the original story.
  • "I think about my investors sometimes too. They truly were people of character and principle." (Chinese: 我也时常想起，我的那些个投资人，他们本来个个有情有义。) is a reference to the quote “我在想我的那些个蛐蛐儿，它们个个都有情有义。” "I'm thinking about my crickets. They are loyal and devoted, every one of them." by Chen Gong (Chinese: 陈宫) in Episode 3 of Three Kingdoms. (For explanation, see Equation Imperial Sting, which parodies the same line.)
  • "If he's pulling out, I'm pulling out too" (Chinese: 他撤资，我也撤资) is a reference to the quote “那好啊，他过江我也过江。” "Fine, if he's crossing the river, I'm crossing the river too." by Guan Yu when discussing the possibility of Sun Quan attacking Guan Yu's Jingzhou (Chinese: 荆州) in Episode 71 of Three Kingdoms.
  • "Be it investors or historical consultants, just pretend our crew never had any of them to begin with." (Chinese: 什么投资人、历史顾问，只当我们剧组从来就没有这些。) is a reference to the quote “只当是陈宫从来就没有这些。” "Just pretend Cheng Gong never had any of them to begin with." by Chen Gong when Cao Cao invited him to rebel against Dong Zhuo and asked him how to settle Chen Gong's families in Episode 2 of Three Kingdoms.
  • "Guess it's time to make peace with that." (Chinese: 只能释怀了。) is a reference to the copypasta 释怀了 "getting over it", which refers to the soundtrack 关羽之歌 "Theme of Guan Yu" from Three Kingdoms. This soundtrack became a meme for its overuse in the TV series even when Guan Yu himself is not present, and people leave the copypasta comment 释怀了 whenever they hear this soundtrack.
  • "A proper consultant costs a fortune, but going ahead without one just makes you look cheap." (Chinese: 正经顾问太贵，不找顾问又显得太便宜。) is a reference to the quote “抱歉，我的脑袋太贵，你的又太便宜。” "Sorry, my head's bounty is too high, but yours is too cheap." by Cao Cao to Chen Gong when they were wanted after Cao Cao's failed assassination of Dong Zhuo in Episode 2 of Three Kingdoms.
