Imagenae
Last updated 2026-08-30

It relies on Wishpower to sustain itself, so if not bathing in the light of the Phantasmoon, it vanishes soon.
Imagenae,[Note 1] historically known as strangelings, and rarely, Faekind,[2][3] are a species of creature that inhabit Planarcadia, created from Wishpower.
Description
Imagenae are creatures which populate the world of Planarcadia. They are sustained through Wishpower, a phenomenon on Planarcadia drawing from the Path of Elation.[4] Each imagenae is driven by their internal core, gaining wishpower from the Phantasmoon or human beings, while their body is composed of a discrete matter. Studies into these cores are difficult, so much about how they work remain speculation.[5] Imagenae are sustained through a constant supply of Wishpower, otherwise they will degrade into wispae.[6]
Creation
The creation of imagenae can occur either as a natural phenomenon on Planarcadia, created through the passive Wishpower of the Phantasmoon, or through the process of imagenesis. The exact origins of imagenae, and their evolution, have been lost to time, leaving only room for theory.[7] The most popular account is that imagenae were first created by Graphia, when she invented the art of imagenesis during the Cindearth Age.[5][8]
While it is possible to attempt the creation of any kind of imagenae, going too grand will often result in failure. Due to Planarcadia's gradual shift to realism, the prospect of creating large imagenae has dimmed. Currently, the Thundercoil is the biggest imagenae to be created. Attempting to create imagenae of this manner is a serious crime, and the sanitarium of Duomension City is filled with these failed creatures. It is outright illegal to create humans through imagenesis.[5]
Aberrations
Aberration is the term coined for imagenae deemed "uncontrollable and degenerated." These imagenae are not created intentionally, and are instead a byproduct of environments rich with energy or Wishpower. This process has been directly compared to how Pathstriders function.[5] Due to the conditions of their creation, they are more likely to appear during the Phantasmoon Games, due to any "miracles" offered by Supplicants, oversaturated Wishpower, and concentrated generation of aberrant disasters. It is the responsibility of the Department of Aberration Defense to deal with aberrations when they appear.[9] Graphia Academy teaches Aberration Prevention as one of its courses.[10]
Culture
Culture around imagenae has significantly changed with the oversight of the Interastral Peace Corporation. The IPC heavily pushed for the introduction of basic human rights to the imagenae, which saw the introduction of several laws to better introduce imagenae to human society.[11] One of these laws, the Faekind Protection Act is currently in its fifth edition, and dictates the responsibilities for both human and imagenae kind. One major change, was the official recognition of "imagenae" as the species name, rather then "strangeling," which is seen as outdated.[12]

Trivia
- Some types of imagenae are likely inspired by various creatures in Japanese folklore.
- The ploos resemble kappa, small water-dwelling creatures with beaks.
- The orchs resemble oni, ogre-like humanoids that have bright and unnatural skin tones.
- The furbos resemble bake-danuki, a shapeshifting version of the real-life Japanese raccoon dog.
- The ghosts are similar to yūrei, spirits trapped in the mortal realm due to a strong emotion or obsession experienced in their last moments.
- The origin story of the moonlull is reminiscent of the moon rabbit.
Etymology
- Imagenae is a play on the word imagine, referencing their sustained existence on Wishpower.
- 幻造种 huànzàozhǒng translates to "phantasmal creation-kind." The word 幻 huàn, lit. "fantastical, phantasmal" is also part of the Chinese name of the Phantasmoon (幻月 huànyuè).
Notes
- ↑ Instances are generally left lowercase in-game.
