Dialogue
See Ray at Scott Outpost
- (Idle)
- Roland: How inconsiderate!
- Ray: Looks okay to me~
- Ray: Maybe I can get them to help me out with something...
- (Talk to Roland and Ray)
- Roland: ...Even so, I have to hereby state my position: It's not wise to just let them get away with their style of doing things.
- Ray: Ha, I actually don't hate you complaining about things we can't change. At least it's better than just following orders from start to finish...
- As if hearing footsteps approaching, Ray looks over here without finishing her subtle "evaluation."
- Ray: Huh? (He'sHe's /
She'sShe's) here. - Ray: Hi~ (Mr.Mr. /
Ms.Ms.) Independent Investigator, how are you today?
I'm fine~
- Ray: *sigh*~ Unlike you, someone's been rather sad lately... Despite not really picking up spirits at all?
Worried about business
- Ray: Isn't that great — here's some "good news" for you then.
- Ray: Nineveh's Ether activity has recently been surging with sightings being made in previously unreported areas.
- Ray: This has led to rapid expansion of the scope of Withering, and the number of Ethereals activated by the pollen is rapidly increasing by the hour... no, by the minute...
That sounds scary...
Sounds really exciting...- Ray: Therefore, a new round of "Operation Reaper" must be performed to cut Nineveh's activity and suppress the spread of Withering.
- Ray: "Swords to plowshares"... That's the origin of Operation Reaper.
- Ray: Otherwise, with Nineveh as the radiation source, multiple areas within Hollow Zero could be activated simultaneously... Which the Defense Force can never allow to happen.
- Ray: Don't worry. It's not the first time. Nineveh cannot be completely shut down, and the exchange of gifts between the outpost and Miss Nineveh is not about to stop in the foreseeable future...
- Ray: ...Or put another way: It's just time to "weed the garden" again.
- Ray: Although this kind of "weeding" is just a liiiittle dangerous...
Then why did you ask me to come here?
Is it right to outsource work if it's so dangerous?- Roland: ...
- Ray: Ahaha~
- Ray: Huh? What a coincidence! They're here.
- Roland: ...Go, and let the person who named you speak.
- You follow Roland's gaze to where two familiar figures appear on the observation deck overlooking Hollow Zero...
- Tsukishiro Yanagi: Tsukishiro Yanagi, Deputy Chief of Hollow Special Operations Section 6. And this is a member of Section 6, Asaba Harumasa. If you recall, we shared an "unexpected collaboration" previously.
- Asaba Harumasa: We meet again, "Captain"~
Hollow Special Operations Section 6!
- Harumasa: Wowee, no need to get so excited? We all have names around here, Captain (WiseWise /
BelleBelle)~
- Harumasa: Wowee, no need to get so excited? We all have names around here, Captain (WiseWise /
Ah yes, I remember- Yanagi: So then, let me fill everyone in on the situation. I'm not sure how much you know about this operation...
We're going to fight Nineveh, right?
We're going to "weed the garden", right?- Yanagi: Yes. This involves dangerous Ethereals, and Operation Reaper is something that the HSO and Defense Force regularly cooperate on.
- Yanagi: This time, Section 6 is taking point for the HSO while we hope to engage your Independent Investigation Squad to join in phase one of this Operation Reaper.
Phase one?- Yanagi: We're splitting this operation into two phases. First is a pursuit and eviction exercise in which Nineveh, who has been running rampant past several observation areas, must be driven back to a pre-determined attack location: the Garden.
- Yanagi: Then, an assault will be launched upon the "Garden", with more than sixteen combat units deployed at once to continually suppress Nineveh and perform an all-out curtailment of Nineveh's activity...
- Harumasa: So it's a battle of attrition~
- Yanagi: You could say that. In any case, the goal is to reduce Nineveh's activity below the level two warning indicator so that she cannot leave the Garden witin a controlled period of time.
- Yanagi: Asaba and I will be in charge of eviction in phase one. Once we track down Nineveh, we'll force her into the Garden as soon as we can.
I think I know what I need to do...- Yanagi: You're very clever. Phase one requires units capable of exploring and pathing inside Hollows and during our last "unexpected collaboration," your team's Bangboo performed exceptionally well. And Dr. Ray also told us that your squad's abilities go far beyond even that.
- Yanagi: That's why if you don't object, we'd like to enlist the help of your team in the following eviction operation.
It doesn't sound like there's much room to object...
No objection~- Yanagi: Thank you for your understanding. Otherwise, as per Chief Miyabi's instructions, I would have to enroll you in our service.
- Harumasa: I told you Captain (WiseWise /
BelleBelle) would agree. Who doesn't want to be compensated for forced overtime... - Hearing Asaba's speech, Tsukishiro frowns in silence, before turning to Roland and Ray.
- Yanagi: Captain Roland, Dr. Ray, do you have anything else to add?
- Roland: ...Seeing as Chief Hoshimi has pulled everything together, I have nothing more to add.
- Ray: Whew... He didn't, but I do.
Nineveh's long-distance movement patterns have been recorded in the literature before, but scant video or physical evidence remains. - Ray: Apparently, while she's moving, the way Nineveh produces Seeds and Constricting Vines — plus the accompanying behavioral pattern of Hornets — can all change...
Understood. I'll do my best.
- Ray: You are far and away my favorite sample collector — I mean, my favorite independent investigator~ Thank you very much.
- Yanagi: Dr. Ray, I understand your intent, but all of this needs to be carried out without compromising the combat operations.
- Ray: It's no problem for Captain (WiseWise /
BelleBelle), right? No problem at all, no siree~
Got it. Depends on the situation.
- Ray: Depends on the situation? That means you'll never miss any situation that's worth recording, right? That's the spirit~
- Yanagi: Dr. Ray, I understand your intent, but our top priority is driving away Nineveh, and I'm pleased that our Captain-sir here understands that.
- Ray: Okay, okay... But Captain (WiseWise /
BelleBelle) can certainly do it, right? Just help me out a little without compromising the combat operations... I'm counting on you!
- Roland: ...It's time to prepare for combat.
- Roland: Regular Hollow Zero investigations are incomparable with this campaign. Please choose your personnel carefully.
Are you talking to me?- Roland: ...
- Roland returns to the command tent without saying a thing, with Ray shooting a surreptitious wink in your direction before leaving. What a strange combo... unless it were a movie, in which case: classic.

- (Idle)
- Harumasa: Lucky that wasn't me...
- Yanagi: That team leader sure is one smart cookie...
- (Talk to Yanagi and Harumasa again, optional)
- Harumasa: That guy got allocated overtime...
- Yanagi: With your temperament, you should be thanking (himhim /
herher). Otherwise, we'd be the ones that Dr. Ray is looking for. - Harumasa: But you'd definitely turn her down, right? Wouldn't you, deputy chief?
- Yanagi: No. It's not a bad thing to do a small favor for a future favor.
- Harumasa: ...

Maybe later
- (Exit the UI)
- (In the Commission)
- Area 1
- Yanagi: Combat target sighted up ahead!
- Harumasa: Tch... You got all this way... Nineveh!
- Yanagi: Clear the area and continue the pursuit!
- Area 2
- Yanagi: Attention all units, the combat target is moving!
- Harumasa: We're in a hurry, if you could stay out of our way...
- Area 3
- Harumasa: It feels like... Ether activity is rising!
- Yanagi: Watch your step! It's constricting vines!
- Yanagi: Ignore those Constricting Vines and get through the area as fast as you can.
- Harumasa: And those "Hornets"... Don't get stung, okay?
- Fairy: Master, I suggest you ignore the Constricting Vines and focus on other enemies.
- Area 4
- Yanagi: Ether crystals! They appeared in an instant...
- Harumasa: That means that demon flower is nearby, right?
- Harumasa: Do these walls really have to block the way?
- Yanagi: No time to complain, just go around.
- Area 5 - Start
- Harumasa: So many walls... Ms. Nineveh wants to keep her distance.
- Yanagi: We can use this to force the target to the designated area.
- Harumasa: It's a flower seed! Little one, hide behind the wall!
- Area 5 - End
- Yanagi: Excellent. Target is moving to the designated location.
- Harumasa: Well done, the bait and switch worked!
- Yanagi: Clear the remaining areas and continue the pursuit.
- Yanagi: Drive Nineveh into the Garden.
- Nineveh Fight
- Harumasa: We've done it! We can finally call it a day!
- Yanagi: No, we aren't done yet.
- Yanagi: We must keep Nineveh in the Garden before starting the attack.
- Yanagi: Begin the first phase of engagement.
- Yanagi: Do everything we can to weaken her!
Chat with Roland and Ray
- Roland: Good, Nineveh has already entered the intended battle site. The next assault will be commenced by HSO and Defense Force...
- Ray: Wait wait wait! I heard that after forcing Nineveh into the Garden, there has been a round of contact fighting?
Yes.
To prevent her from leaving the Garden...- Ray: Then may I ask: Do you want to participate in the assault?
- Roland: What?!
You mean that nonstop battle of suppression?
That battle of attrition?- Ray: What are you so nervous about? It's not like you have to fight alone all day. There are a dozen squads from the Defense Force and HSO taking turns~
- Ray: I was just thinking... Seeing as you have the ability to fight Nineveh head-on, why don't you just apply to join the assault?
- Ray: The pay for that is super decent~
- Roland: ...The pay is decent because that's the most dangerous part of the whole Operation Reaper!
- Roland: Amateurs should never get involved!
- Roland: I know, Ray — you've always wanted to extract a Nineveh sample that's under Overload Activation, but you can't do it for your selfish reasons...
- Ray: ...Selfish?!
- Ray: "Ray Yersin's research is driven by self-interest" — look at me in the eye if you really believe it, Captain Roland, and say it again!
- Ray: Besides, Captain Roland, if you hadn't rejected my request for sample collection sent to the outpost six times in a row, I wouldn't have to seek the help of an independent investigator, would I?
- Roland: ...
...Can I ask you something?
- Ray: I know you want to ask what Overload Activation means.
What does Overload Activation mean?- Ray: Previous Operations Reaper have proven something: Once Nineveh is subjected to long-term high-intensity stimulation, she produces periodic spikes of Ether activation, which radiates to nearby Ethereals... and other lifeforms.
- Ray: This property of Nineveh's is called Overload Activation.
- Ray: When over-activated, Nineveh will quickly generate symbiotic colonies — her Constricting Vines and Hornets — which when killed extends Nineveh's over-activation.
- Ray: After several cycles of over-activation, Nineveh will enter True Activation state, during which Nineveh... Let's just say that this is when the assault force temporarily retreats.
- Ray: However, if Nineveh can go in and out of True Activation repeatedly for a number of times... Nineveh's activity will drop drastically. In theory, it could even reach a state similar to Hibernation...
- Ray: Despite the fact that this theoretical result has never been produced in practice...
- Ray: This is the intended scope of Operation Reaper.
- Roland: Ray, as you fully understand what an assault entails, you should also understand why your requests for sample collections were rejected.
- Roland: On a battlefield like that, there're just two orders I could ever give a soldier.
- Ray: ...I understand, but I won't give up. Why has Nineveh's Hibernation never materialized...? I have to procure those samples.
- Ray: If you won't, I'll find someone else who will.
- Ray: Now then, investigator... (WiseWise /
BelleBelle), you heard all that. Would you like to accept my proposal?
I'll help you out, Ray.
How do I participate in the assault?- Before Ray has time to respond to your answer, Roland has already turned around and left...
- Ray: ...
Er...
Is everything cool with Captain Roland?- Ray: Ignore him. HSO dispatched Section 6 for this Operation Reaper. They... won't be as rigid as Roland.
- Ray: Plus I heard that you've got great chemistry with them. So long as Section 6 accepts your application, Roland has no grounds for stopping you.
- Ray: I know it's risky... no, cruel for me to raise this with you.
- Ray: The impact of Nineveh's Overload Activation on lifeforms is reported to be short-term and decline after leaving the Garden. As for long-term effects... I cannot guarantee anything. Nobody can.
But you still brought it up.
Ray wants to study the Hibernation, right?- Ray: Yes.
...That's why I'm entrusting it to you.
Apply with Tsukishiro Yanagi to take part in the assault
- Harumasa: Oh? Someone's coming~
?
I'm here to apply...- Yanagi: Captain-sir, you're here to apply to participate in the assault, correct?
- Yanagi: Are you sure you understand the objectives and risks of this assault? As a soldier of the Defense Force, only select units may participate in Operation Reaper.
- Yanagi: Do you have any special reason why you must participate in this operation?
Because I'm strong.
- Harumasa: Hahah... Sorry, I'm not laughing because I don't believe you. It's just...
- Harumasa: Tsukishiro, doesn't the way Captain-sir said that seem familiar to you?
- Yanagi: ...You're clutching at straws now, Asaba.
Because I want to help out Ray.
- Yanagi: ...Just that?
- Yanagi: This is Scott Outpost. Standing before you are two members of Section 6, yet you sounded like...
- Yanagi: "I'm the only one who can help her."
- Yanagi: If you're holding on to naive ideas like that, you shouldn't participate in Operation Reaper in the first place.
- Yanagi: ...This is how I would've replied to you.
- Yanagi: However, Captain Roland just came and explained your situation to me, including your previous conversation.
- Yanagi: He told us about Dr. Ray's research needs and recommended you as Dr. Ray's collaborators during this assault on Nineveh.
- Yanagi: Plus, he may not have asked me to relay this, but I think he feels a little sorry for you, and I think you should know that.
Sorry? Isn't he the one who recommended us?
Sorry? Then why were we rejected before?- Yanagi: He didn't explain. But I can hazard a guess...
- Yanagi: It's not that he doesn't understand the value of Dr. Ray's research. In fact, he wants to help with Ray's research more than he lets on.
- Yanagi: ...That's why as a commander, he forces himself to remember and adhere to something more important: protecting his troops.
- Yanagi: He will always consider you civilians instead of soldiers, despite you being collaborative investigators at the outpost... That's why he feels sorry for recommending you.
He's being too hard on himself...
I'm one of the gang now, Captain Roland!- Yanagi: ...Maybe. I can understand Captain Roland's sentiments.
- Harumasa: Hmm? What did you say just then, Deputy Chief? It was so low that I couldn't hear.
- Yanagi: I said, Asaba, do you want more shifts in the assault?
- Harumasa: No, hang on. If Captain-sir applied to fight, shouldn't the roster be more relaxed?!
So my application was approved?- Harumasa: The deputy chief said it, so there's no reason not to approve, right?
- Yanagi: ...Captain Roland mentioned that your investigation squad has experience in exploring Hollow Zero and suggested that Captain-sir go over exploration records and analyze which Resonium builds would be more effective during the assault on Nineveh.
- Harumasa: Seeing as we have this squad leader joining in, then I...
- Yanagi: Denied.
- Harumasa: I haven't said anything yet?
- Yanagi: Captain-sir and I will be in different combat shifts. This mission will be tough, and we should all prepare ourselves for combat.
Then I hope we can all clock off early together.- Yanagi: ...
Deal 5,000,000 DMG to Nineveh in a single challenge
- (Unlock Inferno Reap)
- Ray: Good. You've earned the right to take part in the assault.
- Ray: The operation is codenamed "Inferno Reap," and you can check out all the details here.
- Ray: This assault will be on Nineveh during her special state.
- Ray: Please heed these important factors relating to Nineveh.
- Ray: Appropriate use of Resonium Kits can greatly boost your combat power.
- Ray: As for your rewards—I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
- Ray: HQ will allocate rewards based on various combat metrics during the assault
- Ray: The better you are, the more you do—and the more you get. Easy enough to understand, right?
- Ray: Alright. I suggest you look over the combat requirements.
- Ray: Get yourself ready for combat... The rest is up to you.
Talk with Roland about the assault
- Roland: ...For matters regarding Operation Reaper, please report to Section 6.
Don't you want an update on the battlefield, Captain Roland?- Roland: ...I know how it is. You're fighting... remarkably well, even when compared to the Defense Force soldiers experienced in battling Nineveh.
Don't you have anything else to add?- Roland: ...I should thank you. If it weren't for you and your squad, I'd still be in a predicament during Operation Reaper, and let Ray down yet again...
- Ray: What? What? Did I hear someone say something?
So you're listening, Miss Ray.
I thought you didn't want to talk, Miss Ray.- Roland: ...I didn't say anything weird. I was just thanking the leader of the Independent Investigators for collecting the samples you requested.
- Ray: ...Hey... Hey hey... Y—you...?
- Ray: ...I don't need you to say thanks for me!
- Roland: I also retract what I said — It was not a rash decision to deploy personnel outside Section 6 in Operation Reaper. At least your squad is worthy of such acknowledgement.
- Before Roland can finish speaking, a clear voice rings from one side...
- Hoshimi Miyabi: You're right.
- Miyabi: Section 6 has never been headstrong. We act only to win.
- Soukaku: Yes, yes. Obviously we win every time! Isn't that the point of a mission, to win? Why are people always calling us weird? I don't get it!
- Yanagi: Captain Roland, we're here to confirm with you the equipment resupply, personnel changes, and operating frequency changes after the first round.
- Roland: Chief Hoshimi, too...? Isn't this matter usually handled by Deputy Chief Tsukishiro...?
- Miyabi: Yanagi is handling it this time as well. I happen to go the same way.
- Ray: Wow, I thought Chief Hoshimi would wait for orders on the front line until the operation ends...
- Miyabi: Is that what I should do?
- Miyabi: Yanagi said that only by fighting and resting in rotation as she scheduled can we complete this mission as quickly as possible.
- Miyabi: However... my battle rotations are one-seventh fewer than what Yanagi originally told me.
- Yanagi: This is because before the assault began, a few squads were added to the force, and the Independent Investigators led by this person are among them.
- Hoshimi Miyabi is looking at you... Is her gaze always so hyperfocused? It's enough to make you feel nervous...
- Miyabi: I remember you.
- Miyabi: So you're not just good at calibrating Bangboo.
There're plenty of things I'm good at.
I'm good at fighting, too.
- Miyabi: Oh? What kind of weapon do you usually wield? Defense Force firearms, or HIA tools? Don't tell me it's just a knife? Can I please take a look at your knife?
That's not what I meant...- Miyabi: Alright, you don't have to tell me.
- Miyabi: You're going to fight Nineveh, I can tell.
Of course. I plan on settling the score with her.
I'm suddenly really nervous and feel like taking a break.- Yanagi: What the Chief means is: She will pay attention to your investigation squad's performance, that's all. For future combat arrangements, please follow the official orders issued by the HQ.
- Yanagi: We haven't finished weeding the garden and still need your cooperation... Captain Roland, I'm glad to see you've reconciled your differences with Dr. Ray.
- Ray: Reconciled? We never got along.
- Roland: I agree with Dr. Ray.
Miss Deputy Chief, I think...
Just ignore those two.- Yanagi: ...I understand. Then I'll look forward to your investigation squad's performance in the Garden, Captain-sir.
- The members of Section 6 left after confirming operational matters with Captain Roland...
- Despite being a little curious about Hoshimi Miyabi's deployment, this is one meeting you cannot sit in on...
- There's only one thing left to do: Get ready for Operation Reaper.
