Ashvapati is a quest-exclusive NPC who first appears in the Event Story Quest A Commission From the Curatorium of Secrets in Where Waves Meet the Reef: Part I - A Commission From the Curatorium of Secrets.
Profile
Ashvapati was a student of the Kshahrewar school in Sumeru Akademiya but was expelled for violating one of the academy's taboos. He soon found himself in the desert, alone and nearly became a victim of the sands until he ran into an Eremite named Khaemwaset. He agreed to help his tribe out with odd errands, granting him a spot and told him that he specialized in weapon development, though Khaemwaset dismissed the idea, stating that their current weapons were good enough. He instead suggested to make toys, and Ashvapati agreed. Ashvapati continued his research, taking interest in the Ruin Drakes, culminating in a product that could direct them to attack specific targets.
Eventually, Sennedjem, an Eremite who had abandoned Khaemwaset's tribe to save himself, returned and learned of Ashvapati's research. He offered a collaboration to rake in Mora, and the scholar agreed until he learned what his research was used for. Unaware that Sennedjem had sold the technology to Khaemwaset's enemies, they used it to raze the tribe. Ashvapati was only able to save three children — Ati, Raya and Neb, adopting them and swearing revenge against Sennedjem and his associates.
Ten years later, when Nasha Town hosted their annual expo, Ashvapati initiated his plan to lure Sennedjem and his associates there. He acquired information on his crime ring and leaked it to the Liyue and Fontainian authorities, as both nations were struggling from an influx of criminals armed with advanced weaponry. This resulted in them heading to the expo to nab the mastermind, and when he learned that the Liyue delegation had brought powerful prototype ballistae, stole them while they were apprehending Sennedjem's associates. He then managed to learn of the deal that had been brokered and made his way there, setting the ballistae on the location to atone for his sins. During the meeting, he was stopped by the Traveler, Yelan and Chevreuse, with Beidou intercepting the stolen ballistae. As Sennedjem and his associates were taken into custody, Ashvapati was left in a state of limbo, since he had not technically committed a crime. Instead, to help maintain neutrality due to his ties to the Voynich Guild, Chevreuse dropped charges on him. Nefer, who had discerned the truth, then dismissed him from the guild for lying but suggested he return to the desert to start a new life with the children, though he was unsure of how to achieve it. At that moment, Dori appeared and offered a crystal that could create a fully fledged oasis in the most aridest of deserts. Ashvapati was unsure if he could buy it, but Dori offered to take the proceeds that the kids had raised as payment, which Ati immediately accepted.
