Haden

Last updated 2026-07-30

Haden is the instructor who taught several Khaenri'ahn knights, including Surtalogi and Dainsleif, the Black Serpent Bladework 500 years ago. He is a current member of the Abyss Order and takes the form of an Iniquitous Baptist.

Profile

According to Dainsleif, during Haden's time as a sword instructor, he hid his cruelty under a benevolent exterior and inflicted unjust corporal punishment upon his students to maintain his hold on power and suppress the next generation of knights. In one incident, he mutilated Surtalogi for aspiring to follow the ideals of knighthood.[1]

Five hundred years later, he appears in the form of an Iniquitous Baptist as the last foe in the stronghold of the Abyss Order located in the Cinder City during the events of A Space and Time Without You. After Dainsleif and the Traveler defeat him together, he claims that the Traveler's Sibling has successfully revived Khaenri'ah after traveling to the Night Kingdom and reweaving Khaenri'ah's ley lines using the Loom of Fate.

When the Traveler leaves to speak to Direidyth and investigate these claims, the Baptist attacks Dainsleif, who recognizes him as Haden and engages him in further battle. As they both are under the curse of immortality, neither die permanently. During the ensuing conversation, Haden claims to have lost much of his former memories and emotions, resulting in his changed personality. Haden admits to his previous lie: the ley lines had not been completely rewoven, and they needed Dainsleif's memories of Khaenri'ah—which are more intact than those of most Khaenri'ahns bearing the curse of immortality thanks to the restorative effects of his brother's ring—to supplement the process.

Despite the fact that the Traveler's Sibling left Khaenri'ah during the Cataclysm, Haden expresses a belief in their sincerity and supports the goal of reviving their homeland.

Trivia

Etymology

  • Haden may derive from Hagen, also known as king Högni. In Norse mythology, Högni was the wielder of the sword Dáinsleif, crafted by the dwarf Dáinn. When drawn, the sword cannot be sheathed again unless it has taken a life.
    • The abilities of the sword Dáinsleif and Högni's status as its wielder may be reflective of the relationship Haden has with his students.
