Traveler's Sibling

The Traveler's Sibling is the lost twin sibling of the Traveler and the (‍Princess‍/‍Prince‍) of the Abyss Order. The primary goal for the Traveler in Genshin Impact is to find and reunite with their sibling — traveling throughout Teyvat, obtaining information about them from meeting with members of The Seven.

The gender and name of the sibling depend on the player's choice at the beginning of the game during their fight against Asmoday. If the player chooses male, the lost sibling is a female named Lumine; if the player chooses female, the lost sibling is a male named Aether.

Appearance

The physical appearance of the sibling is very similar to the Traveler's. Both have slim figures, (‍blond‍/‍blonde‍) hair, golden-yellow eyes, and very pale skin. Lumine's hair is a bob cut with shoulder-length, straight twin-tails; while Aether's is medium cut with a long braid.

Lumine wears a pale white sleeveless dress accented with blue lines and twin tail capes, along with gloves that cover her thumbs. She also wears white stockings and boots. Aether wears a dark breastplate vest paired with dark brown pants and black boots. He also sports a white scarf and a two-tailed cape decorated with golden embroidery and intricate decals.

Certain parts of the Traveler's clothing light up based on the current element they are attuned to. In the opening cutscene, both siblings are seen with glowing white clothing and yellow wings. However, though they retain their glowing white clothes, the sibling has yet to show use of any of the several elements in or out of combat.

In the Archon Quest Chapter I: Act IV - We Will Be Reunited, the Sibling is shown wielding the same white-gold sword as in the opening cutscene, but it now glows with dark energy.

We will be reunited, dear brother. But not here, not now. We will meet at this journey's end... Once the dust has settled. Then you will understand.

In the past, the Traveler's sibling has been described as someone very talkative and cheerful, who loved talking about their dear brother or sister. They seem to be, overall, more sensitive and emotional than the Traveler, which leads them to take certain decisions based on their feelings rather than their logic.

The sibling now has a vendetta against the divine after finishing their journey across Teyvat for reasons unknown. They are solely devoted to accomplishing the goals of the Abyss Order regardless of what has to be done to do so. Despite their questionable actions, the sibling still cares for the Traveler, as they express a desire to return home with them after finishing their goals and convinces them to continue their journey across Teyvat to witness the truth themselves rather than forcing their views on them.

The sibling came to see Khaenri'ah as a second "home" upon losing their memory and being adopted by the nation. Even after regaining their memories, the sibling did not lose their attachment to the country. When presented with the chance to reunite with the Traveler, they chose to take that chance despite knowing they would regret leaving Khaenri'ah at its most critical moment, a regret that led the sibling to be devoted to restoring the nation, even if it means delaying the reunion with the Traveler in current times.

Story

Aether and Lumine were born on an unnamed planet that was home to Inteyvat flowers.[6] Based on the Traveler's descriptions, the two of them had similar childhood experiences to those in Teyvat; when Arataki Itto explains beetle fighting, the Traveler can respond with "I played when I was a kid" or "I watched people playing that when I was a kid," suggesting that similar activities existed in their home world;[7] they also had imaginary childhood friends.[8] They were the rulers of the planet,[9] though their kingdom was eventually destroyed by the Abyss.[10][Note 1] The twins escaped from their homeworld with a spaceship piloted by a navigational AI.[11] Afterwards, they began to journey across various planets in the sea of stars in search of another world where Inteyvat flowers grew.[12] Their journey lasted for enough time that "numbers had lost their meaning"[11] and for them to have witnessed "the birth and death of stars."[13] At some point, the twins received a signal sent via Project Moongazer on the Frost Moon; the Traveler responded with a reply, promising that they would eventually attempt to locate their planet, but that they were currently busy.[14] Thousands of years ago, the spaceship flew over the skies of Teyvat, but left soon afterwards.[15] Much later on, the spaceship returned and crash-landed on Starsand Shoal,[16] an event which was witnessed by Khaenri'ahn researchers in the Universitas Magistrorum.[17] The Traveler's sibling was the first to awaken from hibernation with no memory of the Traveler,[18] and appeared in Khaenri'ah "after the heavens responded to the summoning,"[19][20] without having ever visibly exited from the spaceship after the landing;[16] the Traveler speculates that the sibling may have already left the spaceship during its first visit.[15]

In a ceremony attended by Dainsleif, the Vinster King Irmin appointed the Traveler's sibling as the heir to the throne and they became the (‍Princess‍/‍Prince‍) of Khaenri'ah.[9] Irmin and the court of Khaenri'ah proclaimed that they were a source of hope and strength to the kingdom, leading to them being granted the celebratory title of "Savior" by the Khaenri'ahn people. After several years of having served as Khaenri'ah's royal heir, they slowly recovered their memories, and began to search throughout Teyvat for the Traveler, but was unable to find them.[18]

Five hundred years ago, Irmin would initiate a ritual to turn the sibling into a vessel for unlimited Abyssal power.[9] However, the great Abyssal power that the sibling had absorbed was stolen by and divided amongst the Five Sinners of Khaenri'ah when the latter, along with Dainsleif, stormed the palace.[18][21] Shortly afterwards, Abyssal monsters created by Rhinedottir began to swarm from Khaenri'ah to the rest of Teyvat in an event known as the Cataclysm.[22] They initially intended on fighting in the defense of Khaenri'ah during the cataclysm, but was interrupted when Direidyth told them that the Traveler was looking for them.[18] As proof, Direidyth showed them the key to the Hibernation Chamber on their spaceship that, unbeknownst to them at that time, she had obtained from 500 years in the future via Istaroth's intervention.[18] Choosing to reunite with their twin over saving the nation,[18] they rushed back to the site where they had crashed and woke up the Traveler, showing them the destruction being wrought.[23][24] As the twins attempted to flee Teyvat, they were confronted by Asmoday, who then attacked the sibling first and sealed them away in a cube.[25]

The Traveler's sibling eventually woke up shortly after the Cataclysm, and traveled the world of Teyvat with Dainsleif. During their travels, the sibling encountered the Aranara race of Sumeru and helped them repair the Varuna Contraption.[26] In thanks, the Aranara named them "Nara Varuna." Before parting with the Aranara, they told Araja of another golden-haired human who would visit them in the future and give them even better memories.[26] At another point in their travels in Sumeru, they met Chlothar Alberich and witnessed the effects of the gods' curse on the people of Khaenri'ah through Chlothar's son, Caribert, who had been transformed into a hilichurl.[27] After using the Abyssal power imbued into him by Vedrfolnir, Chlothar was able to temporarily reverse the curse and bring Caribert back to sentience.[28] However, Caribert eventually took off his mask and "an immense energy"—the power of the Abyss—knocked the sibling out. When they came to, Chlothar addressed them as the (‍Princess‍/‍Prince‍) of Khaenri'ah, who controlled the Abyss and who the Khaenri'ahns once believed would bring "new strength and hope" to their nation. This initially unnerved them—however, over the course of their travels with Dainsleif, they came to be of the opinion that Chlothar had been right all along and joined the Abyss Order, eventually becoming their leader.[29]

Shortly before the Traveler's arrival in Mondstadt, they orchestrated a plot to weaponize the dragon Dvalin.[30][31] While overseeing the operation in Stormterror's Lair, an Abyss Mage informed them that their plans had being impended. They asked the Mage whether the Anemo Archon was responsible, only for the Mage to respond that they were well prepared for his interference, and instead revealed that it was caused by the Traveler's reappereance.[32] They then ran toward a cliffside, where they watched the Traveler fight hilichurls in the grounds of Stormterror's Lair, unbeknownst to the latter.[32] This same area was later revisited by the Traveler and Dainsleif, where the Traveler sensed the presence of their sibling in the past through the dandelion they had stepped on.[33]

During an altercation between the Traveler and an Abyss Herald in front of the Defiled Statue, the Traveler's sibling appeared through an Abyss portal to save the Herald. Upon briefly being reunited with the Traveler again after their separation, the sibling asked the Traveler not to stop them or the Abyss. They also revealed the truth of Dainsleif's origins and that the monsters of the Abyss Order were once the people of Khaenri'ah that had been transformed by a curse. The Traveler tried to persuade them to leave Teyvat and continue their journey together; the sibling agreed to this, but only after their war against the Heavenly Principles was over. The sibling then told the Traveler to continue traveling Teyvat, in the hopes that they, too, would eventually see the true nature of the world presided over by The Seven and Celestia. They then left with the Herald through a portal.[5]

At some point, the sibling visited The Chasm and saw many dead hilichurls who had wandered inside the cavern. There, they discovered a pool of water which repressed the effects of the curse; the hilichurls had been attracted to the water and had gone there to die in peace. Angered and upset by their needless suffering, the sibling authorized the activation of a device that would supposedly amplify the water's effects to the point that the curse would be removed for good, regardless of how likely the plan would be to succeed. If the device worked, the hilichurls would be reverted to their previous forms as humans of Khaenri'ah, but if it failed, it would inflict extreme, needless pain on the hilichurls. The device backfired and it was destroyed by Halfdan with the help of Dainsleif and the Traveler.[34]

Despite not having acquired the Eye of the First Field Tiller, the sibling was somehow able to progress with the Loom of Fate operation, raising concerns from Dainsleif as he also realized that he had a memory of giving the eye to someone. This was a false memory implanted by Caribert, allowing the sibling to infiltrate the ruins where Dainsleif had kept the eye. They were accompanied by a single Abyss Herald: Frost Fall, though the Traveler defeated it. Dainsleif then sent the Traveler away and unsheathed his sword, while the sibling confronted Dainsleif and had a brief scuffle with him, though they noted that he had some hesitation raising his sword against them. After the battle, the sibling rushed into Caribert's consciousness, reuniting with the Traveler. They had a short conversation, where the sibling revealed that they were trying to find the full potential for the Loom of Fate before the Heavenly Principles would awaken, though unsure as to when or how they would do so. The sibling admitted to missing the Traveler, but would not reunite with them until their war against the divine was over. Caribert's memory then began to collapse, and the sibling revealed that they would not recall their conversation and regretfully parted ways with them.[35]

At some point after Natlan's victory against the Abyss, the sibling had the Order attack Natlan as a feint to distract the tribes and the Fatui in Natlan while they descended into the Night Kingdom, speaking to Yohualtecuhtin, Lord of the Night. Upon learning that they intended to create an "Atlas" to store a nation in it, the sibling had several members meditate in an attempt to reconstruct the nation they remembered while also luring Dainsleif out, knowing that he had the most lucid memories of them all. They used the Loom of Fate to weave the new Ley Lines and stored it in the Atlas, reuniting with their sibling in a distant memory. The sibling revealed that they were guilt-ridden for their inaction to protect Khaenri'ah, as they sought out their sibling when they were met by Direidyth and wanted to find a place to put it down. They also revealed that they wished to speak to the Heavenly Principles on equal footing, and in order to do so, they would need the backing of an entire world.[18] This conversation was overheard by Asmoday, whose portals were visible in the background.[36] This was later revealed to be because Asmoday has defected from the Four Great Rulers and instead joined the Traveler's Sibling, a choice that angered Melanta, a Domain Keeper created by her.[37]

Trivia

  • A coffin that held the sibling at some point can be found in the Side Chamber of the Cage of Suchness. Curiously as the object is approached the environment takes on a reddish tinge.
  • The color on the outfit of the Traveler that represents their current element has remained unchanged on the sibling's clothing, being bright white. This color was present for both siblings during their battle against Asmoday in the opening of the story.
  • The Traveler's Sibling addresses the Traveler as "Aether" or "Lumine" regardless of the name the player chooses for them.
  • Most official videos and art by HoYoverse that feature the Traveler have Aether fill that role, while Lumine takes the position of their sibling.
  • Missing person posters of the sibling appear throughout in Mondstadt City and Liyue Harbor due to the Traveler requesting their respective governments to help look for them. After learning the sibling is the leader of the Abyss Order, the Traveler ceased asking nations to post these posters.
    • Although released in game much later than the initial nation, several such posters can also be spotted throughout Dornman Port and Millhaven.
