In the Tranquility of Cycles is a World Quest in Volkodlak Tundra, Snezhnaya.
Start Location
Start the quest by approaching the wooden cabin in the sea to the southeast of the Tidesong Cavern Teleport Waypoint.
Steps
- Approach the wooden cabin on the ice
Dialogue
The cabin on the ice seems but a hair's breadth from sinking into the sea. What happened while you were gone? Is the owner of the house, who refused to get ashore, still in there? Approach the cabin to check it out.
- (Nearing the quest area)
- Paimon: Look,(Traveler)! Isn't that the wooden house we encountered the last time? Crap, it looks like it's about to sink!
- Paimon: Paimon wonders if that Chulkaturin guy's still in there. Let's go check, and quick!
- (Approach the quest area)
- Sunken House: ...
- Paimon: Do you hear that, (Traveler)? That rustling, it sounds like it's coming from inside that wooden house...
- Paimon: Chulkaturin! Hello! Chulkaturin? Are you still in there?
Are you there—?- Chulkaturin: Ah, it is you, shorebound travelers.
- Paimon: So you were inside! Come on out, quickly! The ice is about to melt — your home's gonna sink!
- Chulkaturin: Yes. The ice is melting away.
We can pull you up.
It's time to come ashore.- Chulkaturin: Ashore... Thank you, travelers by the shore, but...
- Chulkaturin: No, I shall not leave this house.
- Paimon: Are you serious!? This is not the time for that! If you don't get ashore, you're gonna go under!
- Chulkaturin: If this place that I could set my feet upon, this final place that belongs to me, must end in this moment and inexorably sink, then I accept it. This, too, shall be my fate.
- Chulkaturin: It was I who insisted upon increasing its weight. I wished, in my infinitesimal greed, to restore but a shade of our former glory and dignity, to expand my dwelling, and so overburdened that piece of floe...
- Chulkaturin: But this house... No matter the outcome, it is my final resting place. It has borne my flesh, and it carries all my history.
- Chulkaturin: It and I were ever only relics of the olden times. And if I were to step forth from its doors, I would never again find rooting in this world.
- Paimon: What are you talking about!? Do you mean you're just gonna die?
- Chulkaturin: I was always a ghost of history, shorebound travelers. I bear a past I cannot cast aside, indeed, I have borne it long enough.
- Chulkaturin: Anyone can dock by the shore, save for me, traveler, for they have new lives they may live.
- Chulkaturin: But not me. Should I wish to start a new life, I shall have to atone for the past — the all-too-heavy, all-too-stubborn past, which has long become a part of my life, one I cannot cut free.
- Chulkaturin: If silence comes in this moment, then I say, let it come. This is the fate I have awaited all these years.
You still have a chance to choose your destiny...- Chulkaturin: And this is my "choice," traveler.
- Chulkaturin: As long as you know the law the wind follows, even on the river current, you can, in large part, know the path you shall take.
- Chulkaturin: But on land... Though the wind that sweeps through it has never changed paths in these hundreds of years, this land's future can never be predicted.
- Chulkaturin: Should I step on land... should I tread upon soil estranged and step into its unknowable future, how many of my choices would belong to "me" then?
- Paimon: Oh no, more and more of the ice is melting...
- Paimon: C'mon, Chulkaturin, enough of this talk about choices. Come down! We can talk about this stuff later.
You can return to the water in the future...
You can build another home on the ice...- Paimon: That's right! If you don't wanna live life on land, you can get ashore, build a house just like before, and then it's back to living on water!
- Chulkaturin: It can never be just like before, travelers by the shore.
- Chulkaturin: A new house, even if we do not build it on Snezhnayan land, shall not become a place for me to lay my head.
- Chulkaturin: Were I to build a new house, the wood I would use would never again be the snow poplars I once grew up alongside.
- Chulkaturin: And the ice, made solid again for this house, would not again bear up the weight of the past.
- Chulkaturin: Were I to lose my past, I would be little different from a rootless piece of floe in the water. Even if we should return to the water, we would shatter and melt at any moment.
- Chulkaturin: This home is the final anchorage of an elder age, so please, let this elder spirit continue to dwell alongside it.
- Chulkaturin: Thank you, shorebound travelers, my... my friends. Your help once allowed this house, fated to sink, to last for some days more.
- Chulkaturin: Now, I would ask one final thing of you.
- Chulkaturin: Please leave me here. Shatter the brash ice upon the water's surface no longer, pull the house no more, and persuade me not again.
- Chulkaturin: And if you are willing, please say a last goodbye to me here.
- Paimon: Chulkaturin...
No, please. Come ashore.
- Sunken House: (The house makes no reply. It only sinks quietly.)
Farewell.
- Chulkaturin: Farewell.
No familiar sounds come from the house again. For a long while, you hear only a strange song, hummed by someone in an ancient, complex tongue.
Perhaps it tells of the snow poplars yet unfelled, of glories untarnished, of yesterdays yet unsubmerged.
The song grows ever softer, like ever smaller ice blocks melting, melting, turning at last into bubbling foam on the water's surface.
The ice melts away.
