Jenck

Last updated 2026-02-13

Jenck is a quest-exclusive NPC from Fontaine that appears in the World Quest Series Questioning Melusine and Answering Machine.

Profile

Jenck is introduced as an editor at The Steambird, accused by Talochard of causing Sir Arthur's disappearance. He repeatedly mocks the Melusine and refrains from bringing up important information — like Sir Arthur being the steambird, not an employee — until he can make a public spectacle of her in front of an audience, namely Paimon and the Traveler.[1]

After many twists and turns on their way to recover Sir Arthur, Talochard, Paimon, the Traveler, and the thinking machine "Curve" discover that Jenck was, in fact, the person who stole Sir Arthur and dismantled it. Jenck struck a deal with the Fatui: He would find and give them Mosso Lombroso's research notes on "Curve," while they would support Jenck's rise as The Steambird's Editor-in-Chief after he discredited and ousted Euphrasie. While he technically succeeded in delivering Mosso's research notes, his attempt to kill Talochard, Paimon, and the Traveler led "Curve" to sacrifice himself so they could escape to safety. This outcome greatly displeased the Harbinger who originally sought Mosso's research (implied to be Sandrone[2]), and Jenck was severely punished; he was rendered an unresponsive husk, with his tongue cut out and replaced with an apology letter directed at the three survivors.[3]

Story

Jenck and Talochard first encountered each other while Talochard was serving as the tour guide for the aquabus' Callas Line. While Jenck praised her to her face, he published complaints about her afterwards, likening her voice to a crow's. This gave Talochard a lasting negative impression of him.[4]

Shortly before the start of the World Quest Series Questioning Melusine and Answering Machine, Jenck was approached by Fatui agent Baulande (under his codename, Baulard), who was convinced that the secret to uncovering Mosso Lombroso's legacy could be found at The Steambird. As a bribe, Baulande gave Jenck information about a small criminal group known as the Elegant Tableware Confrerie; Jenck's exclusive scoop on the group's scamming operation gave him a considerable reputation boost.[4]

Thanks to Baulande's tip, Jenck discovered the truth behind Mosso's legacy and how The Steambird lied to the masses 30 years ago. Harboring ambitions of deposing Editor-in-Chief Euphrasie and taking over The Steambird, Jenck plotted to make the most of this discovery. He contacted Baulande's supervisor, a direct subordinate of a Harbinger, with an offer to find Mosso's inheritance in exchange for their help in taking over the paper and making him the new Editor-in-Chief.[3] Meanwhile, he refused to offer Baulande any information when the agent returned, angering the agent.[4]

As part of his plan to expose The Steambird's past deception while uncovering Mosso's secret laboratory, Jenck stole Sir Arthur and planted a threat letter referencing Mosso's incident. However, that very night, Baulande — who intended on sneaking into The Steambird and finding information for himself — noticed the missing mascot and took the threat letter for himself.[3] The next morning, Talochard and "Curve", who Talochard had brought out of storage, came across the scene of the crime and decide to investigate of their own accord. Talochard's habit of drawing conclusions makes her ill-suited for investigative work, however, and her lingering enmity towards Jenck leads her to accuse him as Sir Arthur's "killer" without any evidence. Euphrasie leaves with "Curve" to gather information, and eventually the Traveler and Paimon come across the bickering duo. Upon her return, Euphrasie convinces the two to help Talochard and "Curve" solve the case.[1]

Their investigation leads them first to the Elegant Tableware Confrerie, then to Baulande, which reveals the link between Sir Arthur's theft and Mosso's legacy.[4] They eventually convince Baulande to abandon his mission, while using the clues they uncovered — with some assistance from Mosso's granddaughter, Melo Lombroso — to discover Mosso's old facility. However, they are not the only ones to arrive — Jenck overheard them discussing its location in front of The Steambird, and decided to retrieve the documents with the help of some Fatui personnel. After the Traveler and Curve defeat the Fatui forces, Jenck reveals himself at the end as the culprit and declares his motives to the group. This turns out to be a distraction so he can activate the facility's self-destruct device, and he quickly flees the scene while trapping the four inside. "Curve" sacrifices himself to save the others and Jenck disappears for the next several days, despite Talochard's attempts to find him and bring him to justice.

Eventually, Euphrasie contacts the three to reveal that Jenck was dumped inside the Opera Epiclese, kneeling on the stage and completely unresponsive to outside stimuli. When the Maison Gardiennage took him in, they discovered his tongue was cut out and replaced by a brief apology note addressed to the Traveler, Paimon, and Talochard. Euphrasie surmises that it was left by Jenck's backer, who either did not want to make an enemy out of them or disapproved of Curve's destruction. The Traveler and Paimon wonder whether this backer was the Harbinger interested in machine intelligence whom Jenck mentioned.[3]
