Naberius

Naberius, also known as Maadteraahka by the Frostmoon Scions, is the Ruler of Life among the Four Great Rulers of the Heavenly Principles.

Profile

As the Ruler of Life,^[7] Naberius governs over the laws of life in Teyvat. From Hyperborea to Sal Vindagnyr, her compassion was revered by all.^[8] Like the other Great Rulers, her existence also predates any Archon.^[9]

Even after Rhinedottir devoured her heart and she lost her agency, her consciousness still remains and continues to express her disapproval of the way Rhinedottir uses her power for her own amusement.^[10]

Appearance

In her original form, Naberius, as with the other Shades, had the appearance of a tall woman with long white hair. Despite her face not being properly shown, it can be safely assumed that the left eye of her current form were her original eyes, being golden with chromosome-shaped pupils. Her hair was in a jellyfish cut, similar to Focalors' hair and faded to blue with circuit patterns and she wore an off-shoulder white dress with sleeves wrapped around her arms with blue interior with circuit designs. Her hands were also stained a blue that faded to black with circuit patterns.

Story

History

In the time period known as "When the Doves Held Branches," Naberius was created by the Heavenly Principles to assist them in fighting against the Seven Sovereigns. 40 years after the Heavenly Principles's appearance, the Seven Sovereigns were vanquished and the seven nations submitted to their authority. Naberius was responsible for helping the Heavenly Principles create animals, plants, and humans.^[5][8]

Upon the birth of a child, the people of Hyperborea offered a pinch of sea salt to Naberius at the sacred stone. The newborn was then bathed in warm water infused with Winter Icelea as part of the blessing ritual.^[8]

After the deposition of the Primordial Sea's first heart, the Hydro Dragon, she created Egeria to serve as the new heart of the Primordial Sea.^[6][8]

In Asmoday's absence, Naberius and the other Rulers began introducing objects they found interesting into the exhibition halls of the Temple of Space^[11] and allowing minor changes.^[12] Additionally, together with the other Rulers, she commissioned Venipi to recreate a Sumerian desert complex from memory, resulting in the present-day Desert Pavilion.^[13]

About 500 years ago

After the Cataclysm, Naberius's heart was eventually discovered by Albedo and his master, Rhinedottir, deep in within a dungeon. Shortly after discovering it, Rhinedottir disappeared, leaving behind a message for Albedo to uncover the "truth and meaning of this world."^[14] Her heart was later devoured by Rhinedottir, and Naberius fused with her.^[7]

After fusing with Rhinedottir, Naberius lost her agency, with Rhinedottir inheriting her powers and duties as the Ruler of Life. During a routine meeting with the other Rulers in Celestia to discuss the whereabouts of Asmoday, Rhinedottir attended in Naberius's place. Though stripped of her agency, Naberius still voiced her disapproval of Rhinedottir's words and actions from within their shared mind.^[10]

Present

With the Pyro Gnosis in hand, Nahida had an audience with Ronova, Istaroth, and Naberius. After hearing Nahida's reasoning to burning Irminsul down, Naberius stated that the Dendro Archon herself had now become a great tree and allowed her to burn the old one down, as there was nothing to fear.^[15]

• Naberius's artwork features long sequences of objects that closely resemble DNA sequences, tying into her concept of life.
• In the book The Headless Coquitao, when the last fantasist was executed by Coquitao and his companions, and the river of blood at last pleased the jade-skirted master who dwelled above the thundering clouds, she called down sweet rains to cleanse all rivers.
  • The jade-skirted master is inspired by Chalchiuhtlicue, whose name means "she of the Jade Skirt", the Aztec goddess of water and fertility, and the patroness of childbirth, who often held a dual role in Aztec mythology as both a life-giver and life-ender. In this context, the jade-skirted master could be Naberius.

Etymology

• Naberius is a demon and Marquess of Hell mentioned in the Ars Goetia, who takes the form of a three-headed dog or a raven. He is said to have a harsh voice.
• Máttaráhkká (also Maderakka, Madderakka and Maadteraahka; lit. 'origin woman') is a mother goddess in Sámi shamanism. She is connected to childbirth and has been said to give child its body and make female humans and animals fertile.
