Four Great Rulers

Last updated 2026-08-31

The Four Great Rulers, also known as the Four Shades,[1] or Archangels,[2] are four gods who serve directly under the Heavenly Principles as Their emissaries.[3] They were created by the Heavenly Principles following Their descent to Teyvat, serving as the personifications and rulers of the laws.

Overview

The Four Great Rulers are tasked by the Heavenly Principles with governing over the metaphysical laws of Teyvat.[4] They are implied to be more powerful than the Seven Archons, with Istaroth named as a "higher power" compared to the late Electro Archon[5] and Ronova describing the Tsaritsa's powers as "paltry."[6]

According to Yohualtecuhtin, Lord of the Night, the Shades do not like to be mentioned by name by any living being, even including by The Seven, and instead prefer to remain in the shadows as Shades.[7]

They reside in Celestia, where they periodically hold meetings which every member has attended without fail except for Asmoday, who has been missing since the events of the Cataclysm 500 years ago.[6]

Trivia

  • The Rulers' attributes appear to align with four of the five Artifact types: life (Naberius), death (Ronova), time (Istaroth),[Note 1] and space (Asmoday)[Note 2]
    • The fifth artifact type, Circlet of Logos, is often depicted as a crown or some sort of headpiece, and seeing as the Heavenly Principles has been described as wearing a crown,[9] They may be the Ruler of Reason.[Note 3]
