Hyperborea

Hyperborea, also known as the Golden City, was a kingdom located in present-day Snezhnaya that was part of the unified civilization. It holds historical significance for being the staging grounds of Anacharsis and Koitar's failed rebellion against the Heavenly Principles. As punishment, it was destroyed by a Celestial Nail, after which it sunk into the Shadow Realm. The Frostmoon Scions are the modern-day descendants of Hyperboreans who escaped destruction by fleeing to Nod-Krai under the guidance of Canon.

Overview

Hyperborea was part of the unified civilization of Teyvat and located in the region presently known as Snezhnaya.^[1] In its prime, it was described as a prosperous city, with a holy citadel and a glorious golden tower,^[2] and may have consisted of multiple satellite cities around a main centre.^[3] Later on, after obtaining secret knowledge from the angels and Anacharsis, it made unprecedented progress and developed extremely advanced and futuristic technologies rivalling those of Celestia.^[4]

Under the stewardship of Koitar and Anacharsis, the Hyperboreans developed their own unique scientific terminology (namely "Tekhneikos processes" and "Mekhaneikos apparatuses") to meticulously document their revolutionary progress. Koitar taught them "forbidden methods" for creating new lifeforms, which they employed to engrave the Frost Moon's light upon the bones of giant beasts to create artificial spirits known as the Snowland Fae to serve as their attendants.^[5] Their knowledge of bioengineering progressed to the point they began to research on how create augmented humans capable of wielding elemental energy at will,^[6] and they also possessed advanced knowledge about genetic processes, such as phenotypic stability and inbreeding depression.^[7]

Notable among their many mechanical creations were the SAMPO (Subatomic Assembling Mass-energy Patterning Orb), which could transmute matter at the subatomic scale and generate endless supplies of food to stave off famine; the Arrow of Terpikeraunas, a defensive implement which could solidify Light Realm energy into a "semi-crystalline polymeric form" and fire it at a chosen target; flying vehicles similar to those employed by the dragon civilization with which they aspired to one day breach the False Sky and explore the sea of stars. They also created extremely sophisticated "time capsules" - operated using the primordial powers of Teyvat - which they used to preserve messages and relics of their civilization for posterity. One such time capsule was used to preserve a live infant, Aksinya, who outlasted the fall of Hyperborea in suspended animation, and was later awakened by the Belyi Tsar while he was exploring the ruins of the destroyed civilization.^[8]

Story

Ancient History

Like other parts of the unified civilization, the people of Hyperborea initially worshipped the Heavenly Principles and received guidance from their divine envoys. Hyperborea was especially significant on account of being connected to Koitar, the first Angel, as well as other lower-ranking angels such as Nicole. The high priest of the city had been bestowed with the Dawnstar of Shahar by Koitar.^[9][10] Long before the arrival of extraplanetary beings, the Heavenly Principles condemned Hyperborea to death, the reasons for it remaining unclear.^[11]

The Arrival of Anacharsis

Approximately 6,000 years ago, the interstellar voyager Anacharsis cast her consciousness into Teyvat and, upon finding that Nibelung's rule had been supplanted by the Heavenly Principles, took possession of a male youth in Hyperborea in order to observe the mortal world.^[12] At the time, the people of Hyperborea had angered the angels by "questioning the progress of knowledge;" Anacharsis infiltrated their debates and successfully refuted all of their arguments, prompting the exasperated chief priest to send him directly to Koitar and plead his case in person.^[13][5] In their fateful meeting, Anacharsis revealed the secrets of the world's origins to Koitar, causing her to develop doubt towards Celestia and fall in love with the youth. As a result, the crown that the Heavenly Principles had placed upon her as a shackle was shattered^[14], and the two lovers pledged themselves to each other while swearing an oath of defiance against Celestia—an act which was witnessed by the Three Moons.^[15][5]

The reasons for opposing the Heavenly Principles lied on Anacharsis' purposes, as noted by the Belyi Tsar, which was to search for Nibelung, who was described as "light from the very genesis of the world," the light that had the potential to "illuminate the entire cosmos," presumably to eliminate the Abyss spreading throughout the sea of stars.^[11] By being "released" from the shackles, Koitar also discovered the destined end of her fellow angels^[16], and possibly, the destiny of Hyperborea itself.^{[17][Note 1]}

The Golden Age

Koitar and Anacharsis ruled over Hyperborea and initiated various plans to prevent the destruction of Hyperborea and prepare for war against the Heavenly Principle:

• The Elysium Project, an ambitious plan with the stated goals of turning Teyvat into a paradise for all humanity without relying on the blessings and judgements of the Heavenly Principles. During this time period, the Hyperborean civilization reached its greatest heights. At the tenth year of the Elysium Project, their crowning achievement was the attempt to construct a tower so tall it could reach Celestia itself, and having technological advances known as Mekhaneikos devices, specialized in both life experiments and firepower.^[6]
• The Shadow Realm, a realm likened to a film covering Teyvat from the Abyss. A realm of "no true form," and likely infinite possibilities, it counteracts the Abyss on the principle that the Abyss's true nature is the eliminated possibility.^[18] For this reason, the Shadow Realm does not have any Abyss contamination. The Belyi Tsar suspected that the science for the Shadow Realm did not exist in Teyvat, so it must have come from Anacharsis.^[19]
• Filii Adamici Evoluti, "the evolved children of humanity." Hyperborea created various types of fae, using bones of giant beasts and the Frost Moon's moonlight.^[5] Fae were created to serve a greater purpose, but later legends regard fae as the humans' slaves.^[19]
• The Primordial Human project, to create a being that can rival the Heavenly Principles as the Primordial Human, a seat belonging to Nibelung as the being born alongside Teyvat. Using the experiences from the fae creation, Hyperborea sought to make a new being from the Cryo Dragon's remains. However, the experiment went out of control, and Hyperborea was covered by Prime Ice, the origin of Snezhnaya's icy landscape today.^[20]

Rebellion

Thirty years after Anacharsis came to Hyperborea, a failed experiment with the Cryo Dragon caused the whole region and its Ley Lines to be frozen with Prime Ice; the Heavenly Principles responded to the event by launching a Celestial Nail.^[21][11] The Hyperboreans, for their part, chose to embrace their final moments with equanimity rather than cling to life. They readied for war, pointing their arrows at Celestia, arming even the newborn Fae with weapons, and amassing the largest gathering of rebels and Angels in history. Koitar took Anacharsis into confidence and beseeched him to return to his original world.^[22] When she finally alighted the steps of the city's tower to declare war upon the Heavenly Principles, even the dragons from the Dark Sea and the previously defeated Dragon Sovereigns came out of their places of hiding to join in the war.^[4][23]

Hyperborea was ultimately destroyed by the Celestial Nail, killing the vast majority of its people and vaporising most of the Fae,^[5] while the city plunged into the Shadow Realm.^[21] Only those who had been far away from the urban centers survived, left to fend for themselves in a cold, desolate wasteland. A few angels, like Nicole, did their best to guide the survivors to safety.^[24]

The Three Moon Goddesses were horrified at the destruction of Hyperborea.^[25] Canon took pity on the straggling survivors and led them to settle in Nod-Krai. According to legend, it was also she who granted them antlered crowns shortly before her own death.^{[26][Note 2]} The survivors named themselves the "Frostmoon Scions" in her honor,^[2] and held fast to their beliefs even long after the passing of their goddess.^[27]

Even after the destruction of Hyperborea, the dragons, who had also participated in the Hyperborean rebellion,^[23] continued fighting against Celestia and were quickly joined by the coincidental return of their King, Nibelung.^[28] The conflict then escalated into global proportions and became known as the War of Funerary Flame.^[29]

Following Nibelung's defeat and the conclusion of the war, the Heavenly Principles expelled the Angels from Celestia and placed a curse on them as punishment for Koitar's rebellion:^[30] Koitar herself was made to lose her memories, while the other Angels were given the choice to lose either their wisdom or power.^[31] Koitar, who had previously been confined to Amsvartnir by Anacharsis,^[32] spent her days within the Royal Court of the Seelie alongside her kin whom she could no longer recognise, where she endlessly sang songs of lament hoping to placate an indescribable sense of bereavement that constantly plagued her. She was later visited by Boreas, and through bonding with him, was able to regain her memories. Following this development, she returned to Hyperborea, where she intends to stay indefinitely while awaiting her husband's return.^[33]

Since the human survivors left the ruin of Hyperborea, the surviving faes became the majority. The Volkodlak united under the reign of King Miscislav and the Miscislavli Alliance, the Vila followed the Grand Duchess Vaselisa Strivozha, and the Snegovik established the House of Hesperides under Yalyane Morevna. Other factions included the Water Imp under the Miscislavli Alliance along the Vila, and the surviving humans once welcomed to the House of Hesperides by Yalyane.^[34][35]

Roughly a millennium after the destruction of Hyperborea, Monomakh Snezhnyi stepped out from the remains of the Cryo Dragon.^[36] Believing himself to be a fae, he first studied under Yalyane, then eventually established the Pale Star Court, directly opposing the Miscislavli Alliance. Around 3,100 years ago, Monomakh defeated Miscislav, uniting the Snowland Fae under the Pale Star Court and declaring himself the Belyi Tsar. At an unknown time, he welcomed the humans to his nation, renamed it to Snezhnaya, and moved the capital from Kitezh to Snezhnograd.^[34][35]

The Belyi Tsar was tormented by his "dark and heavy dreams" and the mysterious origin of himself. His determination to find his origin ended up opening a "passage" to the Shadow Realm, though with a great cost to the innocents. His sins did not stop there, as the Abyss had found its way to Teyvat through the crack in the Shadow Realm he opened. Nevertheless, his discovery of the Hyperborea ruins in the Shadow Realm revealed what he was as a failed Primordial Human, and the history of Hyperborea encouraged him to finish his ascension. To amend his sins, he agreed to become the Cryo Archon.^[37]

After Hyperborea's destruction, the spirits of some of its late warriors were awakened by Abyssal taint, transforming into Wilderness Hunters.^[38]

In the ensuing years, the descendants of Hyperborea raised a tower in Nod-Krai, preserving a number of Mekhaneikos within in hopes that the rebirth of the Frost Moon would allow them to return to their lost homeland. However, the tower later fell, and their relics were looted by "those with ill intent."^[39] The Frostmoon Scions also carried out the Sacred Heir Project, a generations-long attempt to create a prophesied "heir to Elysium" that would revive Hyperborea, through strict selective breeding and eugenics.^[7] This culminated in disastrous consequences 500 years before the present, after which the Scion Aila reformed their faith, burying all mentions of Hyperborea and replacing them with dedications to nature, kindness, and the newborn goddess of the Frost Moon, Kuutar.^[40][41]

• Hyperborea bears a few references to the ancient city of Babylon, specifically in religious theology, with the story of the Tower of Babel as its basis (see trivia § section). Ancient Babylon is widely associated with human pride, arrogance, and rebellion against God; and overtime symbolically became the image for idolatry and false worship.

Etymology

• In Greek mythology, the Hyperboreans (Ancient Greek: ὑπερβόρε(ι)οι Hyperbóre(i)oi) are a mythical group of people believed to inhabit the far north, where they worship Apollo. The term is derived from the Ancient Greek phrase ὑπέρ Βορέᾱ "Beyond Boreas," as the Greeks believed that the Hyperboreans lived beyond the domain of Boreas, the God of the North Wind.
  • Archaeological expeditions in the early 1900s have led some scholars to conclude that the Hyperborean myth originated from contact between Mycenaean Greece and northern Europe during the Bronze Age; in particular, Baltic amber was found at Apollo's shrines on Delos and Delphi, which correlates to early Greek writings that attributed the founding of those shrines to the Hyperboreans.
  • In Theosophical estoteric cosmology, Hyperboreans were the second "root race," which corresponds with stages in human evolution. This was adapted into Genshin Impact via the Narzissenkreuz Ordo's teachings, which named Hyperborea as the first "samsara" in human spiritual evolution, representing the "loss of paradise."^[42]
  • The nominal link between "Hyperborea" and "Boreas" is used in the interactable Ancient Handwriting (II), where a memory-wiped Koitar inadvertently recovers her memories of Hyperborea and her past while repeating "Boreas" to herself. (She had given that name, meaning "North Wind," to the wolf since it came from the north.)
• All currently known ancient Hyperborean names are derived from Old Iranian, Avestan, or Ancient Greek words and names, sometimes combining words from different languages. For example, Razmaspes' name is a portmanteau of two words, one of which is Persian and the other Ancient Greek (see Razmaspes § Etymology).
  • The hat worn by some Hyperboreans is likely based on the Phrygian cap, which originated in Iran and was made popular by the Phrygians.
