Papa Wrench, real name Mr. Shesternin Sr., is a mentioned character in Genshin Impact.

Profile

Mr. Shesternin Sr. of Snezhnaya was the father of Danyusha Shesternin and father-in-law to her husband, Zhorik Shesternin. He was most likely from Novokitezhgrad, as he was friends with the city's Police Chief, Stalanov, and Danyusha and Zhorik happen to live there. Ten years prior to the events of the game, he was traveling on the ship Fortunate One with Zhorik, and on which Chief Stalanov was also a passenger. He disappeared before a scheduled meetup with Chief Stalanov on deck, and although Zhorik behaved suspiciously when questioned, he was apparently believed to have fallen overboard in an accident (or at least, there wasn't enough hard evidence to prove that Zhorik had done something untoward). In actuality, he survived but lost his memory and took on the name of "Papa Wrench." He then traveled between the islands of Nod-Krai with a caravan and eventually settled by Blue Amber Lake, building his workshop there. He was quite charitable, as he only charged nominal fees for making and repairing machinery, sometimes even doing it for free.^[2]

He was Aino's teacher and listened to her ideas, recognizing her passion for building robots for what it really was: genius.^[3][4] Verna claims to be his direct apprentice.^[5]

Appearance

He had blue eyes. In his elder years, he had short gray hair, a mustache, and a chinstrap beard.

Story

After Mr. Shesternin Sr. lost his memory and took on the name "Papa Wrench," he began traveling with a caravan. The caravan leader looked after Papa Wrench, and the children in the caravan loved him because he had endless stories to tell. Tolfin had some dealings with this caravan, which was how he met Papa Wrench.

One child, whose name was Tinet, was temperamental due to an illness that ailed her. When Tinet became too ill to travel with the caravan anymore, they made camp at Blue Amber Lake. Papa Wrench decided to stay behind to look after Tinet. He found an underground warehouse, where he discovered the Stratagema-Cognoscenti's Mask, one of the Proof of the Cognoscenti. He turned the warehouse into his workshop and built various mechanical devices to try make Tinet happy. However, Tinet did not survive, and Papa Wrench later passed away due to chronic illness and grief.

As Papa Wrench, he left his workshop and all his belongings to Tolfin, though as Mr. Shesternin Sr., his children had a legal stake to claim his inheritance. Tolfin decided to lure the Shesternin couple Danyusha and Zhorik to Blue Amber Lake, with the promise of obtaining a Proof of the Cognoscenti. This was meant as a test for Zhorik, who is revealed to have pushed his father-in-law overboard on the Fortunate One to obtain the Shesternin wealth for himself.^[2]
