Spirit Borneol

Spirit Borneol is a type of incense made primarily using ingredients created by Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, such as Rukkhashava Mushrooms, therefore giving it a relatively high concentration of Dendro power. Scholars from Sumeru Akademiya undergoing Satyavada Life training use it for Irminsul attunement, hoping to gain deeper insights and more profound wisdom.[1][2]
Overview
In the centuries since Greater Lord Rukkhadevata's death, Irminsul attunement has developed as a way for scholars to gain new knowledge by receiving knowledge directly from Irminsul. Spirit Borneol is used to connect to Irminsul, as it both calms their minds[1] and heightens their sensitivity to Dendro.[2][3] However, for a small amount of people, exposure to Spirit Borneol may cause adverse side effects such as hallucinations, migraines and fatigue. This can be treated with rest and exposure therapy.[1]
To prepare themselves for Irminsul attunement, as connecting one's mind to Irminsul may cause a person to go mad, scholars who choose this route train their bodies and minds through several phases, the last two of which are known as Satyavada Life and Paripurna Life.[2] Unbeknownst to them, the insanity was caused by the forbidden knowledge in Greater Lord Rukkhadevata's lingering consciousness, not due to an overload of knowledge as the sages claimed.[4]
Story
The Traveler and Paimon first encounter Spirit Borneol while attempting to seek Haypasia, a scholar in Satyavada Life, for directions. Unaware of the custom, they find her incense burner, and the Traveler quickly falls unconscious. They have a vision of Irminsul, with the words "World... forget me" playing in their mind. By the time they wake up, Tighnari and Collei had come to their rescue and taken them to Gandharva Ville to recuperate. Tighnari explains that the Traveler was one of the rare people who experienced negative side effects when exposed to Spirit Borneol;[1] later, after deeming them trustworthy, he further explains that the Traveler did not merely have a strange dream, but that they had actually come in contact with memories contained within Irminsul without going insane in the process. He then sends them to Haypasia for further explanation.[5] After arriving at Haypasia's hideout, and after she awakens, she explains more about Satyavada Life to the Traveler and Paimon.[2]
During Emilie's Story Quest, Pomum de Ambra Chapter: Act I - Floral Debt, Blood Due, Spirit Borneol is used as part of Kirya's plot to kill Lucien and Sylvain. "Auguste," a perfume made from a flower cultivated with a Delusion, had adverse health effects on those sensitive to elemental energy. By concocting a poison using "Auguste," planting it inside Glaze Lilies (which only bloom at night, therefore allowing him greater control over who the poison would affect), and burning Spirit Borneol to increase his targets' elemental sensitivity, Kirya successfully kills both of his personal enemies. However, his plot is ultimately discovered through the efforts of Emilie and the Traveler.[3]
